One such notable impact was its role in the development of knowledge between cultures. This book argues that the Nubian kingdom of Dotawo and the Latin Christians became increasingly more connected between the twelfth and early fourteenth centuries than has been acknowledged. Subsequently, when Solomonic Ethiopian-Latin Christian diplomatic relations began in 1402, they were building on the prior connections of Nubia, either wittingly or unwittingly: Ethiopia became the ‘Ethiopia’ that the Latin Christians had previously been aiming to develop relations with. The histories of Nubia, Ethiopia, and the Crusades were directly and indirectly entwined between the twelfth century and 1402.   By placing Nubia and Ethiopia within the wider context of the Crusades, new perspectives can be made regarding the international activity of Nubia and Ethiopia between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries and the regional role reversal of Dotawo and Solomonic Ethiopia from the early fourteenth century. Prior to the fourteenth century, Nubia had been the dominant Christian power in the region before Solomonic Ethiopia began to replace it, including by adopting elements of discourse which had previously been attributed to Nubia, such as its ruler being the recognised protector of the Christians of north-east Africa. This process should not be viewed in isolation of the wider regional geo-political context. By adopting the theme of identity as a tool of analysis, it argues that a far more nuanced picture emerges about the relationship than the dismissive portrayal by William of Tyre in his Chronicon, which has largely been accepted by later historians. Building upon previous scholarship in relation to Norman identity, it widens the discussion to evaluate the role of more fluid and evolving Italo-Norman and Italo-Sicilian identities, and how these shaped events. In so doing, this book also argues that the relationship between the territories needs to be considered in different dimensions: direct involvement of leaders and rulers versus indirect engagement through the geography of southern Italy and Sicily. It seeks to understand why and when the crusades and crusading were popular, how they fitted with other cultural trends of the Victorian and Edwardian eras, how their use was affected by the turmoil of the First World War and whether they were differently employed in the interwar years and in the 1939-45 conflict. Building on existing studies and contributing the fruits of fresh research, it brings together examples of the uses of the crusades from disparate contexts and integrates them into the story of the rise and fall crusader medievalism in Britain.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52402160402705,"sku":"NLS9781138296756","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781138296756.jpg?v=1758756868"},{"product_id":"recalcitrant-crusaders-book-paula-z-hailstone-9780367313463","title":"Recalcitrant Crusaders?","description":"This book explores the contribution of southern Italy and Sicily to the crusades and crusader states. This book reassesses Raymond not as a credulous visionary or partisan propagandist, but as a learned author who transformed crusading experience into a coherent work of sacred history. It asks how his representation of Muslims functioned within a narrative shaped by theology, biblical exegesis, liturgy, and the political culture of the Provençal contingent.   Combining textual criticism, intellectual history, literary analysis, and quantitative evidence, the book reconstructs Raymond’s biography, authorship, manuscript tradition, chronology, language, and relationship to other First Crusade narratives. It introduces “xenophany” as a framework for analysing how the Muslim adversary is made manifest through names, ethnic catalogues, accusations of paganism and blasphemy, depictions of warfare, and portraits of Muslim rulers. Rather than treating these images as failed ethnography, the study shows that they render the crusade intelligible as providential history: the enemy confirms Christian identity, divine judgement, and the justice of Frankish victory.  The book will appeal to scholars and advanced students of the crusades, medieval historiography, Latin literature, Christian–Muslim relations, religious violence, and the cultural history of the Mediterranean. Its close reading of a neglected eyewitness, combined with new arguments about authorship, reception, narrative technique, and theological meaning, offers a major reassessment of both Raymond of Aguilers and the textual construction of the First Crusade.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53699389882641,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53699389948177,"sku":"NGR9781041212645","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}]}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/advances-in-crusades-research-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
