In response to this challenge, Pacific Gateways seeks to define a new (if provisional) canon. This diverse, insightful and compelling collection applies ethnographic perspectives (contact zone, participant-testimony, indigeneity) to a diverse range of genres (romance, travelogue, memoir) to demonstrate how the Pacific already prefigures and generates later networks of global exchange. It offers not retrospect into a distant past, but intimations of possible futures, as a portal into alternative forms of planetary consciousness.” (Steve Clark)    This book explores the entanglements of Anglophone literature with Pacific geographies, histories, and cultures during the long nineteenth century, giving a transpacific context to Victorian writers including Dickens, Kingston, Stevenson, and Trollope, and setting them alongside Pacific Rim writers such as Bret Harte, Lafcadio Hearn, Joseph Heco, and Yei Theodora Ozaki. The chapters focus upon the physical and imaginative “gateways” produced by Western technology,   including the port city, the steamship, telegraph lines, and the networks of international trade and finance. These Pacific gateways shape the development of a “transpacific consciousness” in Anglophone literature, whose modes of exchange and patterns of thought can still be seen in modern-day attitudes to the region. The book aims to present a polyglot and cross-cultural history of Anglophone literature in the Pacific, in which Anglo-American imperialism coexists with   established intra-Asian networks. It argues that the establishment of Anglophone literature in Asia did not simply “happen”: there were extra-literary and -academic forces at work, inserting and domesticating in Asian universities both the English language and Anglo-American literature, and their attendant cultural and political values. Offering new perspectives for ongoing conversations surrounding the globalization of Anglophone literature in literary and cultural studies, the book also  considers the practicalities of teaching both the language and its canon of classic texts, and that thehistorical formation and shape of English studies in Asia offers lessons that relate not only to the discipline but also may be applied to the humanities as a whole.        ","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52139573805329,"sku":"NLS9789811635120","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789811635120.jpg?v=1757569762"},{"product_id":"asian-children-s-literature-and-film-in-a-global-age-book-bernard-wilson-9789811526336","title":"Asian Children's Literature and Film in a Global Age","description":"This volume provides a key analysis of Asian children's literature and film and creates a dialogue between East and West and between the cultures from which they emerge, within the complex symbiosis of their local, national and transnational frameworks.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52334512865553,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52334513357073,"sku":"NLS9789811526336","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789811526336.jpg?v=1758157097"},{"product_id":"robinson-crusoe-in-asia-book-steve-clark-9789811640506","title":"Robinson Crusoe in Asia","description":"This collection of essays expands the study of that immensely widely read and much-adapted novel, beyond the first book – The Life and Strange Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe (usually known simply as Robinson Crusoe) – to take in the far less well-known Farther Adventures and the almost unread Serious Reflections, beyond Defoe’s texts, to their re-writing and adaptation and beyond the Atlantic and South American context to an Asian and Pacific context.  The essays consider both how Asia is represented in the books (in terms of politics, economics, religion), and how the book has been received, adapted, and taught, particularly in Asian contexts.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52404146831633,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52404147552529,"sku":"NLS9789811640506","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789811640506.jpg?v=1758763445"},{"product_id":"chinese-may-fourth-generation-and-the-irish-literary-revival-writers-and-fighter-book-simone-omalleysutton-9789819952717","title":"The Chinese May Fourth Generation and the Irish Literary Revival: Writers and Fighters","description":"This book examines how the early twentieth-century Irish Renaissance (Irish Literary Revival) inspired the Chinese Renaissance (the May Fourth generation) of writers to make agentic choices and translingual exchanges. It sheds a new light on “May Fourth” and on the Irish Renaissance by establishing that the Irish Literary Revival (1900-1922) provided an alternative decolonizing model of resistance for the Chinese Renaissance to that provided by the western imperial center. The book also argues that Chinese May Fourth intellectuals translated Irish Revivalist plays by W. B. Yeats, Lady Gregory, Seán O’Casey and Synge and that Chinese peasants performed these plays throughout China during the 1920s and 1930s as a form of anti-imperial resistance. Yet this literary exchange was not simply going one way, since Yeats, Lady Gregory, Synge and O’Casey were also influenced by Chinese developments in literature and politics. Therefore this was a reciprocal encounter based on the circulation ofAnti-colonial ideals and mutual transformation.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52418415952145,"sku":"NGR9789819952717","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789819952717.jpg?v=1782892272"},{"product_id":"asian-family-in-literature-and-film-book-bernard-wilson-9789819724994","title":"The Asian Family in Literature and Film","description":"This book offers a key analysis of the changing perceptions of family in East Asian societies and the dynamic metamorphosis of “traditional” family units through the twentieth century and into the new millennium. The book focuses on investigations of the Asian family as it is represented in literature, film, and other visual media emerging from within China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, and on contestations of the power hegemonies and moral codes that underpin such representations, while also assessing Western and global influences on the Asian family. Individually and collectively, these essays examine traditions and transformations in the evolving conception of family itself and bring together a range of scholars from within and beyond the region to reflect upon the social and cultural mores represented in these texts, the issues that concern Asian families, and projections for future families in their own societies and in a globalized world. Through the written text and the lens of the camera, what directions has the understanding of family in an Asian context taken in the twenty-first century? How have the multiple platforms of media represented, encouraged, or resisted transitions during this time? Amid broader and mutating referential frameworks and cross-cultural influences, is the traditional concept of the “nuclear family” still relevant in the twenty-first century? This book lends further prominence to the diverse literary and cinematic production within East Asia and the eclectic range of media used to represent these ideas. It will be essential reading for scholars of literature, film studies, and Asian studies, and for those with an interest in the cultural and sociological implications of the changing definitions and parameters of the family unit.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52541828268305,"sku":"NLS9789819724994","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789819724994.jpg?v=1760688263"},{"product_id":"asian-family-in-literature-and-film-book-bernard-wilson-9789819722266","title":"The Asian Family in Literature and Film","description":"This book investigates the ways in which the family unit is now perceived in South and Southeast Asia and the Asian diaspora: its numerous conceptions and the changes it has undergone over the last century and into the new one. The prevailing threads that run through a significant part of the literature and cinema emerging from these societies are the challenges that confront those negotiating changing forms of family, changes which are expressed historically, politically, and socio-culturally, and often in relation to gender, ethnic, or economic imbalances. Though regional and localized in many ways, they are also very much universal in the questions they ask, the lessons they teach, and the connections they make. Theoretically, and in terms of focus, the collection offers a broad range, embracing representation and analysis from scholars across the globe and across disciplines. It assembles written and visual texts from and about India, Indonesia, Malaysia, The Philippines, Singapore, and the Asian diaspora. How have more fluid concepts of family in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries affected the understanding of family in Asia? How have families in Asia resisted or embraced change? How have they responded to trauma? What do other readings—gendered, feminist, queer, and diasporic—bring to modern debates surrounding family? To what extent are notions of family, community, society, and nation represented as interchangeable concepts in Asian societies? This book questions the power dynamics, ethical considerations, and moral imperatives that underpin families and societies within, and beyond, Asian borders.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52592946413841,"sku":"NLS9789819722266","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789819722266.jpg?v=1770893390"},{"product_id":"british-romanticism-in-asia-book-alex-watson-9789811330001","title":"British Romanticism in Asia","description":"This book examines the reception of British Romanticism in India and East Asia (including China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan). In its capacity to host diverse experiences, representations, and mediations, exchange enables the discussion of productive, reciprocal, often contested cross-cultural intersections, transfers, and flows, which may initiate long-term processes of hybridisation and transculturality. At its heart, this volume explores how transcultural exchanges have shaped the formation and self-perception of ‘eastern’ and ‘western’ identities and how these processes have been constructed, complicated, and negotiated in fiction, travel writing, philosophical and economic texts, theatre, film, music, manga, multi-media installations, and exhibitions. In our examination of Anglo-East Asian exchanges, we illustrate that the lines between binary oppositions are blurry at best; the manifold types of exchanges considered here offer inroads into a deeper understanding of the separating as well as uniting factors between East Asia and the anglosphere.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53605839274257,"sku":"NGR9783032253750","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783032253750.jpg?v=1780007058"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/asia-pacific-and-literature-in-english-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
