Charles S. Chiu creates «a narrative against forgetting, as a small step out of darkness» by writing about these women’s accomplishments, which were overshadowed by those of the famous men in their lives. Edith Borchardt’s translation brings this narrative to a wider audience. Women in the Shadows will interest scientists and scholars in the humanities as well as the general reader. The women portrayed represent various fields – mathematics, physics, music and literature, journalism, and architecture – making Women in the Shadows suitable for courses on the history of science, German and Austrian studies, as well as women’s studies.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49937410982161,"sku":"CIN0820488569G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52126193418513,"sku":"NLS9780820488561","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0820488569.jpg?v=1750849947"},{"product_id":"wechselwirkungen-book-clemens-ruthner-9780820497259","title":"WechselWirkungen","description":"The essays of this interdisciplinary volume (collected and available in print for the first time) focus on the impact the Austro-Hungarian presence has had on Bosnia-Herzegovina and vice versa. The Geopolitical and Imaginary Borders between the Balkans and Europe","description":"Do the Balkans Begin in Vienna? takes up one of the most fraught areas of Europe, the Balkans. Variously part of the Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman, and Byzantine empires, this region has always been considered Europe’s border between the Orient and the Occident. Aiming to clarify the politics of drawing cultural borders in this region, the book examines the relations between the Habsburg Monarchy and the Balkans as an intermediate space between West and East. It demonstrates that the dichotomy Orient versus Occident is insufficient to explain the complexity of the region. Therefore, cultural multi-belonging, historical disruption, and recurrence of identities and conflicts are proposed to be «the essence» of the Balkans. Do the Balkans Begin in Vienna? depicts the fictional imagination of the Balkans as a «utopian dystopia». This oxymoron encompasses the utopian projections of the Austrian\/ Habsburg writers onto the Balkans as a place of intact nature and archaic communities; the dystopian presentations of the Balkans by local authors as an abnormal no-place (ou-topia) onto which the historical tensions of empires have been projected; and, finally, the depictions of the Balkans in the Western media as an eternal or recurring dystopia. There is at present no other study that distinguishes these particular geographical reference points. Thus, this book contributes to the research on Europe’s historical memory and to scholarship on postcolonial and\/or post-imperial identities in European states. The volume is recommended for courses on Austrian, German, Balkan, and European studies, as well as comparative literature, theater, media, Slavic literatures, history, and political science.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52085180530961,"sku":"NGR9781433115653","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52669662167313,"sku":"NLS9781433115653","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781433115653.jpg?v=1756815239"},{"product_id":"austriaca-and-judaica-book-harry-zohn-9780820425672","title":"Austriaca and Judaica","description":"This collection of essays and translations reflects the Viennese-born author-translator's Austrian-Jewish heritage as well as representing his broad involvement as a cultural mediator between his native and adopted countries. Each chapter investigates a central psychoanalytic concept (alienation, jouissance, perversion, and sublimation) and reads a Jelinek text in relation to the genre that it is perverting, exposing the «obscene fantasies» that lie at its heart. Nine scholars investigate how the complex role of the national past changed the content and context of Austria’s literature. Contributions range from Klaus Zeyringer’s aggressive argument for an authentically Austrian literature, to the late Harry Zohn’s autobiographical insights of a transplanted Viennese. Probing essays examine the Liberal and the National-Socialist era writers in exile and in their roles as post-war social critics. Shadows of the Past also puts the authors themselves in the spotlight: A «mini-reader» of hard-hitting as well as humorous narrative texts complements the literary history that begins the volume. Written by Barbara Frischmuth, Elisabeth Reichart, and Erich Wolfgang Skwara, these six texts are accompanied by helpful introductions to each author. As a further aid for English-speaking readers, the original in German literary and critical texts are translated for the first time. Shadows of the Past allows students of European culture and comparative literature to experience a dramatic century in Austrian literature and history.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52472115855633,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52472116379921,"sku":"NLS9781433106484","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781433106484.jpg?v=1759837477"},{"product_id":"evelyn-schlag-book-beverley-driver-eddy-9780820474267","title":"Evelyn Schlag","description":"This is the first scholarly volume devoted to the works of the prolific Austrian poet and prose artist Evelyn Schlag. After the Three Partitions and Poland’s complete disappearance from Europe’s political map, images of Poland arose to replace the lost kingdom with a national identity grounded in culture and tradition rather than in politics. This book examines the circumstances leading to Galicia’s emergence as the imagined and representative center of Polish culture, juxtaposing the era’s political realities with its literary texts to provide evidence of the cultural community that existed among ethnic Germans and Poles. Collectively, these images reflect a dialogue about Polish identity, and in consequence about the rise of a new European identity that did not correspond to ethnic nation-states but rather to a shared culture, history, and community that Galicia came to represent until its division between Poland and the Ukraine following World War I.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52683883610385,"sku":"NLS9780820478661","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780820478661.jpg?v=1762321720"},{"product_id":"marie-von-ebner-eschenbach-book-edith-toegel-9780820430805","title":"Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach","description":"Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach war Oesterreichs groesste Schriftstellerin des 19.
