Adrian Kelly examines the rationale behind the introduction of compulsory Irish and the ever increasing emphasis on it in the curriculum of the primary (national) schools and at second and third levels. The volume examines the extent to which the policy, which had its genesis in the pre-independence cultural nationalist movements, was not based on the needs of the education system but rather on the demands of nationalism. During the period it was acknowledged that the revival policy was detrimental to the achievement of pupils, but this was seen as an acceptable price to pay for the revival of Irish. The volume also argues that the ill-founded policy damaged the dignity of the language and, while achieving little or nothing in practical linguistic terms, resulted in apathy and at times hostility towards Irish among the general public. Apart from highlighting the clash between the demands of nationalism and the role of the education system, the volume examines the extent to which criticism of the compulsory Irish policy was stifled. This in turn ensured that the effect of compulsion on the education system and the levels of attainment of pupils was never scientifically examined - to carry out such an examination would have been seen as an admission of failure. It was only in the 1960s that there was an official acceptance that Irish would not be revived as the national language in practice, the policy of 'revival' being replaced with that of survival, a change which began to be reflected in the schools from the 1970s.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49643470717201,"sku":"GOR010034390","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0716527472.jpg?v=1751295368"},{"product_id":"gods-and-mortals-in-early-greek-and-near-eastern-mythology-book-adrian-kelly-9781108727174","title":"Gods and Mortals in Early Greek and Near Eastern Mythology","description":"This volume centres on one of the most important questions in the study of antiquity – the interaction between Greece and the Ancient Near East, from the Mycenaean to the Hellenistic periods. Focusing on the stories that the peoples of the eastern Mediterranean told about the gods and their relationships with humankind, the individual treatments draw together specialists from both fields, creating for the first time a truly interdisciplinary synthesis. Old cases are re-examined, new examples discussed, and the whole range of scholarly opinions, past and present, are analysed, critiqued, and contextualised. While direct textual comparisons still have something to show us, the methodologies advanced here turn their attention to deeper structures and wider dynamics of interaction and influence that respect the cultural autonomy and integrity of all the ancient participants.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51020074320145,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51020076810513,"sku":"NIN9781108727174","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52688063693073,"sku":"NLS9781108727174","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1108727174.jpg?v=1750951370"},{"product_id":"texts-and-intertexts-in-archaic-and-classical-greece-book-adrian-kelly-9781108840118","title":"Texts and Intertexts in Archaic and Classical Greece","description":"Encompassing the period from the earliest archaic epics down through classical Athenian drama, this is the first concerted, step-by-step examination of the development of allusive poetics in the early Greek world. Recent decades have seen a marked rise in intertextual approaches to early Greek literature; as scholars increasingly agree on the need to read these texts in a comparative way, this only makes all the more urgent the question of how best to do so. This volume brings together divergent scholarly voices to explore the state of the field and to point the way forward. All twelve chapters address themselves to a core set of fundamental questions: how do texts generate meaning by referring to other texts and how do the poetics of allusivity change over time and differ across genres? The result is a holistic study of a key dimension of literary experience.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51020548931857,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51020550045969,"sku":"NIN9781108840118","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52663089692945,"sku":"NLS9781108840118","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1108840116.jpg?v=1751049110"},{"product_id":"success-complex-book-adrian-kelly-9781788605939","title":"The Success Complex","description":"What does ‘Success’ mean to you? Blending history, behavioural science and a rich tapestry of interviews, Irish author Adrian Kelly explores this age-old question in a new light. Once a struggling student who languished at the bottom of his class, Adrian knows first-hand the sting of failure. Now, three decades later, he brings his experience as a solicitor, entrepreneur and sports coach to challenge common misconceptions about the core skills vital to overcoming challenge, with examples from Napoleon to the movie and sports stars of today. He examines how even the brightest and best can lose their way when it comes to the application of those skills. Finally, in a universe of ever-increasing opportunities, this is an invitation to consider what the most important things to accomplish in your life really are – they might not be what you think. Provocative and practical, The Success Complex creates a template for a new understanding of the pursuit of success that truly fulfils. Adrian Kelly: ‘A pursuit, not just of sustained success, but of a success that sustains you.’","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51051778343185,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51051781718289,"sku":"NIN9781788605939","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52654225162513,"sku":"NLS9781788605939","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1788605934.jpg?v=1751279353"},{"product_id":"sophocles-book-adrian-kelly-9780715637135","title":"Sophocles","description":"In his final play, Sophocles returns to the ever-popular character of Oedipus, the blind outcast of Thebes, the ultimate symbol of human reversal, whose fall he had so memorably treated in the 'Oedipus Tyrannus'. In this play, Sophocles brings the aged Oedipus to Athens, where he seeks succour and finds refuge, despite the threatening arrival of his kinsman Creon, who tries to tempt and then force the old man back under Theban control. Oedipus' resistance shows a fierceness in no way dimmed by incapacity, but he also refuses to aid his repentant son, Polyneices, in his coming attack on Thebes, manifesting once more the passion and harshness which mark his character so thoroughly. His mysterious death at the end of the play, witnessed only by Theseus himself, seems the sole fitting end for such an exceptional and problematic figure, transforming Oedipus into one of the 'powerful dead' whose beneficence towards Athens heralds a positive future for the city. This useful companion provides background, context, a synopsis and detailed analysis of the play.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51520704512273,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51520704610577,"sku":"GOR006166555","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51630294204689,"sku":"NGR9780715637135","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52145070571793,"sku":"NLS9780715637135","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0715637134.jpg?v=1751465700"},{"product_id":"success-complex-book-adrian-kelly-9781788603799","title":"The Success Complex","description":"A radical and timely new understanding of success: discover the simple mindset shift that not only allows you to achieve success, but to sustain it and be sustained by it.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51606815572241,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51606815637777,"sku":"NGR9781788603799","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52654149730577,"sku":"NLS9781788603799","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52754852380945,"sku":"NIN9781788603799","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1788603796.jpg?v=1751313022"},{"product_id":"referential-commentary-and-lexicon-to-homer-iliad-viii-book-adrian-kelly-9780199203550","title":"A Referential Commentary and Lexicon to Homer, Iliad VIII","description":"This book aims to provide the reader of Homer with the traditional knowledge and fluency in Homeric poetry which an original ancient audience would have brought to a performance of this type of narrative. To that end, Adrian Kelly presents the text of Iliad VIII next to an apparatus referring to the traditional units being employed, and gives a brief description of their semantic impact. He describes the referential curve of the narrative in a continuous commentary, tabulates all the traditional units in a separate lexicon of Homeric structure, and examines critical decisions concerning the text in a discussion which employs the referential method as a critical criterion.
