Hal Moore (USA Ret)","description":"Lieutenant General Harold G. Hal Moore (USA ret) is, by many standards, one of the finest battlefield commanders the US Army, and the nation, has ever had. From humble beginnings in Bardstown, Kentucky, to the unforgiving conflict in the highlands of central Vietnam, Moore is the finest example of the ethical and professional soldier. His abilities seemed almost unnatural at times as he faced some of the greatest dangers man could conceive while remaining focused and calm. People like General Moore are not built overnight. He is the product of many years of education, influence and trial which would, to his credit, culminate in the man who was able to keep his promise to his troopers of never leaving one of them behind on any battlefield - POW or MIA. This biography of Hal Moore will show how his unwavering faith in God, adherence to self discipline, and motivation towards always doing the right thing gave the United States one of its most professional, moral and accomplished leaders in history. For this and other reasons Lieutenant General Moore's example and exploits should be taught to every officer and enlisted person of the United States Military whether Air Force, Marine, Army, Navy or Coast Guard, regardless of their age or position.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51021870072081,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51021871808785,"sku":"NIN9781249449140","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1249449146.jpg?v=1751050305"},{"product_id":"evangelicals-and-israel-book-air-university-air-command-and-9781249400820","title":"Evangelicals and Israel","description":"A system of biblical theology known as dispensationalism is premised on the continuing validity of Jehovah's promise to Abraham of the land of Palestine to his physical descendants, the Jews. It further demonstrates that America's pro-Zionist policies have significantly influenced Usama bin Laden to wage his jihad against the United States. Patients receive further treatment while awaiting evacuation back to the United States. PROBLEM: Landstuhl, as capable as it is, reaches a threshold of effectiveness around a census of 100 medical\/surgical patients. New capabilities and processes require development to optimize Landstuhl's effectiveness. METHODS: Statistical analysis showed the effects at Landstuhl of large numbers of casualties experienced downrange. Case studies of emergency direct aeromedical evacuation from the Middle East to the United States showed the feasibility of using this as a method to bypass Landstuhl when reaching the limits of its capabilities. Analysis of current aeromedical policies and procedures help to develop the communications and coordination required it initiate a bypass mission. FINDINGS: The USAF is tactically capable of direct Middle East to the United States aeromedical evacuation. However, its impact on global mobility would require judicious use of the method. CONCLUSIONS: Direct flights from the Middle East to the United States would help alleviate patient census at Landstuhl, given the casualties numbers from past battles in Iraq and Afghanistan. In the case of a concerted enemy effort to inflict harm on US military members in the Middle East, this method alone would not completely alleviate a bottleneck at Landstuhl and further means of increasing capabilities in Europe require more exploration.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52777871278353,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52777871704337,"sku":"NIN9781249358770","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781249358770.jpg?v=1763918635"},{"product_id":"x37-space-vehicle-book-air-university-air-command-and-9781249414476","title":"X37 Space Vehicle","description":"The Air Force invested $16M in NASA's X-37 program and will have exclusive testing of two of these space platforms in FY 2001\/2002. As a lawyer from Alabama who was not formally trained in the military art, he benefited from his initial training by Generals William J. Hardee and Braxton Bragg, two of the best and brightest West Point-trained officers on either side. He rose to become a distinguished regimental and brigade commander in Major General Patrick R. Cleburne's Division, arguably the best in the western theater. Wounded at the Battles of Shiloh and Perryville, he returned to lead at Murfreesboro and Chickamauga. Never able to overcome the stigma of being a political appointee, he resigned after the Battle of Chickamauga. Despite the historical portrayal as an ineffective leader, Brigadier General Wood well and faithfully employed the tactics and doctrine of the times, but ultimately did not achieve the battlefield success required to hold his command. Disenfranchised by the volatile command relationships within the Army of Tennessee, he realized his position and situation, and chose to resign quietly, rather than confront Major General Cleburne and bring discredit upon the division. The use of both primary and secondary sources will be used to set the record straight and show that Brigadier General Wood was an effective combat commander who executed his orders to the fullest. Relevant leadership lessons will be addressed inasmuch as they offer guidance for modern application.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53036253610257,"sku":"NIN9781249415060","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781249415060.jpg?v=1768753468"},{"product_id":"space-power-2010-book-air-university-air-command-and-9781249414377","title":"Space Power 2010","description":"The authors present six basic Space Power 2010 concepts of operations (CONOPS). A Nuclear Armed Iran and US Counter Proliferation Strategy","description":"Worldwide proliferation of weapons of mass destruction has risen since the end of the Cold War. This escalation has brought about a new set of challenges for strategists and policy makers within the United States. No longer is the United States facing a single nuclear threat within the relative security of a bipolar global arrangement. Rather, emergent nuclear states with marked political, cultural, and ideological differences with the US are on the increase. Iran is one such state. A keystone nation bridging the Middle East with the Near East, Iran is currently pushing the nuclear weapons envelope despite protestations from the global community. The Iranian nuclear problem has vast regional implications not only for the near future, but also presents long term global security issues. What's motivating Iran to make the leap into the nuclear frying pan? Are the mad mullahs in charge driving Iran toward a course of global terrorism with an Islamic Bomb? Or, is the nuclear course within Iran a well thought out process, carefully calculated to maximize strategic leverage in order to gain and maintain regional hegemony? Finally, what are the strategic implications for the United States of a nuclear armed Iran? In 1999, the Air Force Chief of Staff directed a study that resulted in the latest shift. This most recent attempt at organizational change placed all aircraft maintenance functions in Air Force wings under the centralized control of a single maintenance group commander. This transformation affected thousands of airmen and provides an excellent opportunity to analyze a substantial organizational change within the hierarchical structure of the United States Air Force. This paper analyzes the processes that Air Force leaders used to determine the necessity for this change, the tools they employed to establish the implementation of the changes they directed, and the methods utilized to ensure the longevity of the transformation efforts. To accomplish this the paper compares actions taken by Air Force leaders to the models offered by some of the leading experts in the field of organizational change and management and offers recommendations for improving future change efforts within the Air Force.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53251798073617,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53251798466833,"sku":"NIN9781249414414","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781249414414.jpg?v=1786129794"},{"product_id":"teaching-of-leadership-book-air-university-air-command-and-9781249456469","title":"The Teaching of Leadership","description":"ACSC put a renewed focus on teaching leadership during the 1996 academic year. A fresh examination of teaching leadership was called for by this renewed emphasis. In order to provide the ACSC faculty with information and resources to develop the best leadership curriculum possible, this development study examined the course structure, content, teaching methods and evaluation criteria used in prominent military, professional, business and educational institutions. The first step in the study was to identify ACSC requirements through a review of both the past and present day ACSC curriculum, as well as interviews with individuals involved in the leadership community within ACSC and Air University. Then the study analyzed the findings which represent responses from seven military institutions, nine business and professional organizations, and twenty-three universities. Lastly, by combining ACSC requirements and the analysis, the study developed recommendations for future enhancements to the ACSC leadership. Recommendations were made for each of the areas of course structure, course content, methodology and evaluation. The recommendations for course structure included restructuring the sequence of course lessons to take a building block or hierarchical approach that more closely follows Bloom's Taxonomy. For course content, the school should consider conducting a similar research study next year, narrowing the focus to a specific theme or suggested area of study. Regarding teaching methods, ACSC should develop or purchase a CD-ROM interactive computer program to teach leadership. The school should increase the number of case studies as defined in the study. Additionally, the study recommends that a psychometric test be used that will help in identifying personality weaknesses. Such a test will balance the picture the individual student gets of him\/herself from the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) currently used by ACSC. The measures of success for the no-fly zones are: a) achievement of air objectives b) congruency between air objectives and higher level objectives, and c) actual effects of each no-fly zone on higher level objectives and a desired end state. The air objectives of each no-fly zone has been to prevent flights of all aircraft not in support of the allied forces, to protect civilians from aerial bombardment, and to provide air supremacy for other missions. The no-fly zone over Bosnia-Herzegovina achieved limited success in achieving air objectives, while the two no-fly zones over Iraq have been very successful. The air objectives of each no-fly zone have been congruent with national objectives. The success of the November 1995 negotiations in Dayton, Ohio is testament to the positive progress toward all of the long term objectives for Bosnia-Herzegovina. The long term effects of operations in Iraq are unclear. To overcome limitations imposed by the physical environment, proper synchronization between all forces will be essential. Rules of engagement for military operations should simplify coordination, integration, and identification among forces so that execution can be decentralized. The long term impact of U.S. military presence in the Gulf should be studied further. In order to maximize the impact and exploit the influence events create, joint planning and interagency coordination of psychological operations are critical. The current ad hoc interagency coordination and joint planning process do not maximize the psychological factors' impact and fully exploit its asymmetrical influence on a target audience's decision making process. Traditional views towards concepts, particularly military PSYOP, do not lead to the innovative solutions demanded by an environment of declining funds and resources. This study recognizes the multidimensional aspect of military PSYOP and calls for redefining an area of operations that has changed little over the years. Additionally, the establishment of an organization responsible for the development of a national marketing strategy integrating all IOPs to achieve objectives beyond the tactical level is advocated. Reviewing subject matter literature from the last forty years provided the project's basis for concepts relating to PSYOP and the Soviet missile gap deception case study. Internet searches, interviews, and recent literature brought current issues to light and developed a picture of U.S. organizations involved in influencing target audiences.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53251815899409,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53251816227089,"sku":"NIN9781249449850","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781249449850.jpg?v=1773592486"},{"product_id":"al-qaeda-book-air-university-air-command-and-9781249450832","title":"Al Qaeda","description":"On September 11, 2001, a new Epoch War emerged. Terrorists hijacked four U.S. commercial airplanes and attacked the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Osama Bin Laden and his terrorist group, Al Qaeda claimed responsibility for those attacks. Fighting against transnational terrorist networks has become the task of the day. The terrorist groups who comprise this network pose the biggest threat. They do not operate openly, do not have permanent places of operation and appear in different forms such as military, civilians, patriots and sometimes groups of religious motive. Osama Bin Laden, Al Qaeda's creator and leader, has developed an operational design to carry out his strategy against U.S. Osama Bin Laden's threat is sharpened by the fact that his ideas are grounded in the tenets of Islam. Professor Bernard Lewis has explained, Islam is not only a matter of faith and practice. It is also for many an identity, solidarity, and loyalty that transcends all other.1 Analyzing Al Qaeda's organizational structure, strategy, ideology, and tactics, we can learn what transnational terrorist networks are all about. Finally, a conclusion and recommendations flowing from the preceding assessments are provided for how U.S. can further refine the strategy plan for the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT).","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53251823173905,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53251824058641,"sku":"NIN9781249450832","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781249450832.jpg?v=1773592528"},{"product_id":"mission-support-advisor-msa-book-air-university-air-command-and-9781249450252","title":"The Mission Support Advisor (MSA)","description":"This study investigated using the Mission Support Advisor (MSA) as the conduit for the Air Force Manpower and Personnel Community's (M and P) transformation from a Cold-War transactional service provider to a strategic advisor for field commanders and base-level customers. External and internal environmental factors such as the Global War on Terrorism, the shrinking Department of Defense budget, the Air Force reduction of 57,000 troops and the changing government civilian workforce have forced the M and P community to reduce the numbers of Airman working in transactional support functions and to leverage new technologies as a force multiplier. Significant changes are necessary for the successful transformation of today's M and P tactician to tomorrow's strategic advisor: a paradigm shift in service culture and the implementation of a new deliberate development model. Worldwide customers in the field expect support during their hours of operation, which creates a 24\/7 on-demand requirement for the personnel community's operational arm. It is unrealistic to expect the entire unit to be open 24\/7, thus there needs to be a Knowledge Management program in place to ensure MSAs get the right information at the right time to support the right customers. Additionally, the MSAs need to exploit the holistic knowledge of the personnel community by developing a community of practice that brings together the past, present and future advisors, as well as M and P customers and subject matter experts.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53352080081169,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53352080408849,"sku":"NIN9781249450252","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781249450252.jpg?v=1774719306"},{"product_id":"electromagnetic-pulse-book-air-university-air-command-and-9781249362500","title":"Electromagnetic Pulse","description":"This research provides evidence that preemptive employment of an electromagnetic pulse device by a rogue state over US pre-positioned forces could have deleterious effects on US first-strike capability, resulting in decreased US regional combat power while degrading, delaying, and possibly deterring further US action. Additionally, it presents a series of measures for preventing, preparing for, and protecting US deployed forces against an asymmetric electromagnetic pulse (EMP) threat. While the United States remains the sole conventional military superpower in the World, potential adversaries will seek ways to counter her dominance. The preemptive use of an electromagnetic pulse weapon over pre-deployed US forces is capable of silencing, permanently degrading, or destroying sensitive electronics prevalent in modern US military hardware. Current neglect of nuclear hardening practices, acquisition of electronically sensitive commercial-off-the-shelf components for US military hardware, and the lack of a firm US EMP retaliation policy make nuclear EMP a particularly attractive weapon-of-choice. This research concludes that the potential impacts to US pre-deployed forces from a preemptive EMP attack would be unacceptable; ultimately degrading, delaying, and possibly deterring the United States from further action against the offending nation. Furthermore, the US military can no longer remain reactive to the threat of EMP attack; instead it must adopt a proactive program of prevention, protection, and policy for her military forces. Through selective shielding of tactical systems, hardness assuredness programs, organic missile defense, and a concrete policy for US response, the United States can better guarantee the survival and combat effectiveness of her deployed military.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53495747576081,"sku":"NIN9781249362500","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781249362500.jpg?v=1777869809"},{"product_id":"desperate-struggle-to-save-a-condemned-army-book-air-university-air-command-and-9781249450009","title":"A Desperate Struggle to Save a Condemned Army","description":"Stalingrad is often described as the turning point of the German war with the Soviet Union, or perhaps even the entire European war. This paper argues that the actual turning point was probably earlier in the Barbarossa campaign, and that the decision to hold Stalingrad, while a serious mistake, followed several other strategic blunders of Adolf Hitler. Given that, this essay reflects a study of primary source material collected from key German commanders, as well as numerous documents collected in 1956 as part of the the Karlsruhe Collection. The focus was to determine where the airlift failed, why it failed, and what could have been done better. Ultimately the failure could be attributed to the lack of a survivable and more capable transport aircraft, difficulties operating out of poorly prepared airfields which were under constant threat from the Red Army, the absolutely miserable weather which frequently prevented any flying at all, enemy action which prevented daylight flights by much of the fleet, supplies which were not ideally suited for airlift, and finally, difficulties organizing the airlift at both ends. Many commanders involved knew it was bound to fail and warned Hitler and Paulus, to no avail. In the end, what could have been a tremendous feat ended as tragic folly.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53509058822417,"sku":"NIN9781249450009","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781249450009.jpg?v=1778156369"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-air-university-air-command-and-s.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
