Over the next four years they transformed it into a country home for their young family and an extended experiment in the methods and materials that would shape their practice; a pavilion drawing on the tradition of the English folly, known as Upper Lawn or the Solar Pavilion. Retaining the cottage's original stone walls and one of its chimneys, the Smithsons built what they described as 'a simple climate house': two open floors looking over the hills and valleys of Fonthill, where life could be lived simply and in consonance with the fluctuations of weather and seasons. The innovations developed in this private and modest home would feed into large-scale projects, such as Robin Hood Gardens housing estate, for which the Smithsons would become renowned. This publication explores the rich story of Upper Lawn's construction and inhabitation by revisiting the small book Alison Smithson created with architect Enric Miralles in 1986. Here, the book's contents, including diary entries, photographs, drawings, and references, are republished in full in a new design, expanded by extensive new materials from the Smithson archive. Together, these documents describe the building's lived life, picturing it as a ledger of wear and use, a means of private and professional exploration, and a lens onto the passage of time inside and outside its walls. This book places Upper Lawn at the heart of the Smithsons' practice, revealing its own quiet philosophy and ethics of architecture. This new book has been edited in collaboration with the Smithson Family Collection and includes an introductory essay by Paul Clarke, Professor of Architectural Design at the Belfast School of Architecture.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49521074471185,"sku":"GOR013606077","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1915743001.jpg?v=1751061675"},{"product_id":"fundamentals-of-the-physical-environment-book-alison-smithson-9780415108911","title":"Fundamentals of the Physical Environment","description":"How do physical, biological and human environments interact? Fundamentals of the Physical Environment presents a comprehensive introduction to the study of the natural environment. This completely rewritten and expanded edition of the classic student textbook Fundamentals of Physical Geography, adopts a systems approach to explain the complex interactions of the natural environment. The nature of Earth and its oceans; the Earth's climate and the potential impact of climate change; the main processes of geomorphology; and elements of ecosystems (soils and vegetation) are all explained. Chapters on sensitive environments are included in this new edition - polar, Mediterranean, drylands and humid tropical environments - through which the processes introduced in earlier chapters are explored and human-environment interactions are analyzed. For the designers, architecture and urbanism were inseparable: buildings encapsulate urban ideas; urban systems are the means by which buildings function effectively. This second book collects both urban and architectural designs that have specific implications for city form into fourteen thematic chapters: the Team X Doorn Manifesto with its worked examples (Close Houses, Fold Houses, Terraced Crescent Houses); large-scale designs such as the Berlin Hauptstadt, Hamburg Steilshoop, and the Kuwait Urban Form Study; and built manifestations of urban ideas, notably the Economist Building of 1959-64. More than a collection of work, The Charged Void: Urbanism represents a record of a focused thought process concerned with the qualities of urban life--a thoughtful and witty collection of observations, decipherings, and recommendations for understanding and improving the complex nature of the city.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49891468411153,"sku":"CIN1580931308VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1580931308.jpg?v=1751056504"},{"product_id":"alison-smithson-imprint-of-india-book-alison-smithson-9781870890496","title":"Alison Smithson - Imprint Of India","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49961140650257,"sku":"NGR9781870890496","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50748127314193,"sku":"GOR014057580","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/B00AO1V64E.jpg?v=1750867342"},{"product_id":"heroic-period-of-modern-architecture-book-alison-smithson-9780500272299","title":"Heroic Period of Modern Architecture","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53574148489489,"sku":"GOR004141995","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53575354908945,"sku":"GOR004295993","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780500272299.jpg?v=1779199325"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-alison-smithson.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
