It aims to show how L'Écume des jours, L'Automne à Pékin, L'Herbe rouge and L'Arrache-coeur form a unified and coherent tetralogy. By establishing close links between these four texts, it becomes possible to achieve a more comprehensive understanding, not only of the significance of the tetralogy in exposing a complex and multi-layered novelistic strategy at the heart of the vianesque, but of the individual novels as autonomous creations. An examination of the novels reveals that they are not merely joined to one another via a superficial network of textual similarities (that which I refer to as intratextuality), but that this intertwining is emblematic of a common method of narrative construction. Each Vian novel is dependent, for a thorough understanding of the text to be possible, upon the multiple lines of external influence running through it. The sources of this influence (which I refer to as intertextuality) are located in various major texts of twentieth century literature, anglophone as well as francophone. Thus, in each instance the narrative is driven by a complicated interaction of intratextuality and intertextuality.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49593486967057,"sku":"GOR013157506","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9042004673.jpg?v=1751033611"},{"product_id":"paris-and-the-fetish-book-alistair-charles-rolls-9789042037779","title":"Paris and the Fetish","description":"Freud’s 1927 essay on the acquisition of a screen memory, or fetish, allows the subject to come to terms with the traumatic truth that, for him, dominates the present moment (in Freud’s scenario, the truth of mother’s sexuality) by maintaining, alongside and not in place of it, a parallel story of the past (the myth of the phallic mother). In this book Freud’s theory of the fetish, and in particular this way of allowing two opposed and ostensibly mutually exclusive narratives to co-exist, is used to provide a number of Parisian crime texts with radical new solutions. The fetishistic world-view of Charles Baudelaire’s poetics will be shown to provide the template for all overvalued instances of women passing by; notably, it will be seen how the famous assault on one of Christian Dior’s models as she displayed the New Look for the first time in Montmartre in 1947 depends on a fetish erected in the poem “À une passante”. The same Paris streets allow red herrings to be raised to the status of truth in novels by Fred Vargas, Léo Malet and Frédéric Cathala. In these texts the discovery of a primal scene allows doubt to be cast over authorial solutions and new murderers or victims to be found. In the case of Jean-Paul Sartre’s La Nausée, the fetishism at work is shown to have harboured a serial killer where no crime was previously considered to have taken place. In these analyses, fetishism is mapped onto prose poetics, intertextuality and deconstruction in order to challenge the way we read text. More importantly, rereading these texts allows us to see fetishism in a new light as a force for positive, creative acts of meaning-making.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50224948609297,"sku":"GOR011002057","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52145404412177,"sku":"NLS9789042037779","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9042037776.jpg?v=1768559131"},{"product_id":"sartre-s-nausea-book-alistair-charles-rolls-9789042019287","title":"Sartre's Nausea","description":"Twenty-five years after his death, critics and academics, film-makers and journalists continue to argue over Sartre's legacy. But certain interpretations have congealed around his iconic text Nausea, tending to confine it within the framework provided by the later philosophical work, Being and Nothingness. This volume opens up the text to a range of new approaches within the fields of English and Comparative Literature, as well as Philosophy and French Studies, under the headings: ‘Text’, ‘Context’, and ‘Intertext’: the textual strategies at work within the novel; the literary, cultural and philosophical context of its production; and the intertextual web within which it is situated.  This volume will interest a wide public of teachers, students and all those who want to reconsider Sartre’s legacy in the twenty–first century.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52678470271249,"sku":"NLS9789042019287","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789042019287.jpg?v=1768559413"},{"product_id":"origins-and-legacies-of-marcel-duhamel-s-serie-noire-book-alistair-charles-rolls-9789004358973","title":"Origins and Legacies of Marcel Duhamel's Serie Noire","description":"In Origins and Legacies of Marcel Duhamel's Serie Noire Alistair Rolls, Clara Sitbon and Marie-Laure Vuaille-Barcan propose an account of a translation practice that is surprisingly innovative and that counters the myths and received wisdom that have dogged this iconic French series.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53511372701969,"sku":"NLS9789004358973","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789004358973.jpg?v=1778196036"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-alistair-charles-rolls.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
