We want to know who else here has good ideas about how to do it. This part-travelogue, part-oral history, part-creative exploration of food politics will introduce readers to twenty people working in agriculture and sustainable food production and twenty farm-fresh foods from across the US. Throughout 2009 the authors will visit twenty farms from coast to coast, talking to farmers about their engagement in sustainable food production, public policy and community organizing efforts. Additionally, a single variety of food produced on each farm will be the subject of an investigation into the history of growing, eating and selling that particular food throughout time. The colorfully illustrated book will be introduced with a historical account of farming by a guest author, and will be accompanied by a supplementary website. It is our hope that by example this book will inspire and cultivate a new wave of agrarians. Half of the authors profits will be put into a fund to encourage like-minded documentary and folklore projects.
Three nails for J. Robert Oppenheimer's office in October 1943 and archived in the Los Alamos Historical Museum, in which the eminent scientist repeatedly requests a nail in the wall upon which he could hang his hat. The persistence and specificity of the request for this nail inspired the international art collective Futurefarmers to create, by hand (and after more than a half-century delay), three nails for the theoretical physicist: one forged from a meteorite, one cast using 1943 steel pennies, and a third made by re-fusing Trinitite, a material formed by residue from the Trinity nuclear bomb test.

Growing out of a site-specific contribution to an exhibition in Santa Fe, New Mexico, this book engages the region's complex nuclear history as it relates to land use, resource extraction, and the far-reaching decisions that were made within the Manhattan Project. Throughout this multidisciplinary project, Futurefarmers constructs a narrative that runs parallel, and in some cases counter to, the conventional accounts of the Manhattan Project and Oppenheimer, its chief architect. The park is in a perpetual state of mutation - it is complicated by each of us. Golden Gate Park stands unto itself as a site of pleasure and curiosity as much as it embodies the legal, social, material and symbolic desires that form the city of San Francisco. Battling historical and political narratives, the construction of publics and counter-publics, leisure space and ecology became part of the workshop's dialogue through collective investigation. This inquiry, as chronicled in this publication, extends beyond San Francisco into an international exploration of parks and public spaces. I'm A Park And You're A Deer is a continuation of this dialogue through diverse formats including: interviews, short fiction, a musical score, essays, photography, and drawings. It is the third book edited by the California College of the Arts Social Practice Workshop.
