Out of 37,451 applicants to Eliot University, Angela stands out - but not for the right reasons. An ambiguous event in her past threatens to overshadow her talent, potential, and her future prospects. Can she overcome the prejudices of those judging her application or is she already tainted beyond redemption, regardless of whether she is victim or perpetrator?  Crackling with razor-sharp dialogue, Amy Ng’s explosive new play asks whether we can ever escape our past and investigates the destructive side of our search for acceptance.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49518059061521,"sku":"GOR010728770","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49988771512593,"sku":"GOR013173398","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51587802038545,"sku":"GOR010414887","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1848427360.jpg?v=1751248869"},{"product_id":"shangri-la-book-amy-ng-9781848426108","title":"Shangri-La","description":"'I refuse to be a panda. I refuse to go extinct. I want to live, to live well, to live like them.'    Bunny, a young woman from the officially designated 'Shangri-La' in the Himalayan foothills of China's Yunnan Province, has witnessed her family's livelihood destroyed by mass tourism. She dreams of escape as a globe-trotting photographer.    But what happens when the only thing you have to sell is your culture? When the only way to free yourself is to betray your roots?    In Shangri-La, her first full-length play, Amy Ng lays bare the contradictions and private pain of cultural tourism. The play premiered at the Finborough Theatre, London, in 2016.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50766912356625,"sku":"GOR008064388","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51056454009105,"sku":"NIN9781848426108","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1848426100.jpg?v=1750866336"},{"product_id":"shanghai-dolls-book-amy-ng-9781839044182","title":"Shanghai Dolls","description":"A stage play telling the untold true story of two of the most influential women in Chinese history  Madame Mao and Sun Weishi. Historians have played a prominent role in constructing nationalist narratives to legitimize the new nation-states arising from the corpse of the multinational Habsburg empire. The alternative liberal and historiographical tradition which privileges multinational states over nation-states, most famously associated with Lord Acton, has been relatively ignored.  Dr Ng addresses this imbalance by concentrating on the lives and works of Josef Relich (1869-1936) and Lewis Namier (1869-1936), both politically active historians from upper-middle-class assimilated Habsburg Jewish backgrounds. They were anti-nationalist historians in an age of nationalism, and staunch defenders of parliamentary democracy in an era when parliamentary democracy came under attack from both the political Right and Left. Both men argued that modern nationalism with its absolutist claims militated against the spirit of tolerance and mutual compromise essential to parliamentary government. This innovative, intellectual history places Redlich and Namier in context.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52150782165265,"sku":"NLS9780199273096","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52780802441489,"sku":"GOR014619137","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53449294741777,"sku":"NIN9780199273096","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780199273096.jpg?v=1757611201"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-amy-ng.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
