It aims to make explicit the basic notions of Thomas Aquinas's social ontology and to show how key concepts from sociology, economics, and political science relate to his ethics and social thought. Social ontology is a growing area of contemporary social theory. Scholars in this area reflect on the ontological status of society and the various realities that make up the social realm. However, Aquinas scholars rarely use the term social ontology, instead resorting to his natural law to examine social life. This volume argues that the social thought of Thomas Aquinas, including his natural law theory, implies a social ontology. Aquinas adopts a clear position on the ontological uniqueness of human beings, the intentional structure of human action, and the existence of informal social relations and institutional realities that shape human society. This volume shows how these views can be reconstructed into a coherent social ontology. Its chapters are divided into five thematic parts. Part 1 offers conceptual elements to bridge the gap between Aquinas and contemporary social theory. Part 2 considers the metaphysics and theology implicit in Aquinas’ social ontology. Part 3 focuses on the way this ontology is at work in his account of the common good and his approach to natural law. Part 4 expands this reflection to economics. Finally, Part 5 addresses legal and political issues such as political polarization, family law, and the ethics of war. Aquinas, Natural Law, and Social Ontology will appeal to scholars and graduate students interested in the thought of Thomas Aquinas, social and political philosophy, contemporary social theory, Catholic theology, and the social sciences.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51597577388305,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51597577683217,"sku":"NGR9781032887548","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52482256994577,"sku":"NLS9781032887548","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53496889049361,"sku":"NIN9781032887548","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1032887540.jpg?v=1750709521"},{"product_id":"contemporary-perspectives-on-natural-law-book-ana-gonzlez-9780754660545","title":"Contemporary Perspectives on Natural Law","description":"Resorting to natural law is one way of conveying the philosophical conviction that moral norms are not merely conventional rules. Accordingly, the notion of natural law has a clear metaphysical dimension, since it involves the recognition that human beings do not conceive themselves as sheer products of society and history. And yet, if natural law is to be considered the fundamental law of practical reason, it must show also some intrinsic relationship to history and positive law. The essays in this book examine this tension between the metaphysical and the practical and how the philosophical elaboration of natural law presents this notion as a limiting-concept, between metaphysics and ethics, between the mutable and the immutable; between is and ought, and, in connection with the latter, even the tension between politics and eschatology as a double horizon of ethics. This book, contributed to by scholars from Europe and America, is a major contribution to the renewed interest in natural law. It provides the reader with a comprehensive overview of natural law, both from a historical and a systematic point of view. It ranges from the mediaeval synthesis of Aquinas through the early modern elaborations of natural law, up to current discussions on the very possibility and practical relevance of natural law theory for the contemporary mind.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52354705129745,"sku":"NLS9780754660545","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780754660545.jpg?v=1758184141"},{"product_id":"kant-on-culture-happiness-and-civilization-book-ana-gonzlez-9783030664671","title":"Kant on Culture, Happiness and Civilization","description":"This book joins the contemporary recovery of Kant’s empirical works to highlight the relevance of his concept of culture for understanding the sources of various characteristic modern dilemmas, such as the tension between culture and happiness, the morally ambivalent nature of cultural progress, or the existing conflicts between a factual plurality of cultures and the historical forces pressing toward a universal civilization.  The book will be of special interest for Kantian scholars, moral and political philosophers, as well as philosophers of culture.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52474002178321,"sku":"NLS9783030664671","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030664671.jpg?v=1759840725"},{"product_id":"identities-through-fashion-book-ana-gonzlez-9780857850577","title":"Identities Through Fashion","description":"Fashion has become a fertile field of study for academics across disciplines, now that the rules, once tightly fixed, have been deconstructed. This volume brings together academics from various disciplines - philosophy, sociology, medicine, anthropology, psychology and psychiatry - to examine fashion's complex relationship with post-industrial societies. Herein the authors address, from the standpoint of their respective disciplines, what crucial functions fashion fulfils in the modern world, especially as it relates to the construction and deconstruction of the self. This volume is the result of a conference held by the Social Trends Institute at which the authors presented original papers. The Social Trends Institute is a non-profit research centre that offers institutional and financial support to academics in all fields who research and explore emerging social trends and their effects on human communities. The Institute focuses its research on four main subject areas: family, bioethics, culture and lifestyles, and corporate governance.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52619162222865,"sku":"NLS9780857850577","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780857850577.jpg?v=1761535140"},{"product_id":"emotions-and-cultural-analysis-book-ana-gonzlez-9781138273115","title":"The Emotions and Cultural Analysis","description":"Amidst prevailing debates that construe rationality and emotionality as polar opposites, this book explores the manner in which emotions shape not only prevailing conceptions of rationality, but also culture in general terms, making room for us to speak of an 'emotional culture' specific to late-modern societies. Presenting case studies involving cultural artefacts, narratives found in fictional and non-fictional literature and television programs, speech patterns and self-talk, fashion, and social networking practices, The Emotions and Cultural Analysis sheds light on the relationship between emotion and culture and the ways in which emotion can be harnessed for the purposes of cultural analysis. An interdisciplinary volume containing the latest research from sociology, philosophy, literary studies, linguistics, and communication, this book will be of interest to those working on the sociology and philosophy of emotion, cultural studies, and cultural theory.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52666251575569,"sku":"NLS9781138273115","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53368605901073,"sku":"NIN9781138273115","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781138273115.jpg?v=1762279469"},{"product_id":"dictionnaire-historique-des-noms-de-famille-romans-ix-book-ana-gonzlez-9783484555112","title":"Dictionnaire historique des noms de famille romans (IX)","description":"\u003cp\u003eThe proceedings of the IX PatRom colloquium (Oviedo 1995), designed to extend the purview of the PatRom project to Asturian (a language situated between Galician and Castilian), assemble studies on a) patronymics in Romance tongues in general (Chambon, DENS) and Asturian in particular (Büchi on names derived from place-names, Maas-Chauveau on names derived from professions, Schmid on sobriquets); b) comparative, Asturian and Romanian onomastics (Sala on names derived from common nouns, Tomescu on names stemming from animal names); c) sociolinguistics (D'Andrés); and d) etymological problems (García Arias).
