A busy freight route up until the 1980s, it has seen large growth in the passenger business since electrification and the opening of the Stansted Airport branch. Recent investment by Railtrack and later Network Rail has seen resignalling south of Bishop's Stortford as well as providing new passenger rolling stock. This first volume takes a journey over the line from Cheshunt to Audley End, stopping at all the stations to view what has changed over the last 170 years. This main line is now principally a commuter route for journeys to London and Cambridge, and for people travelling to Stansted Airport. All the goods yards at the intermediate stations have now closed, except for a stone depot at Harlow Mill, and most of these have been turned into station car parks.
branch-lines-of-east-anglia-bury-colne-valley-saffron-walden-and-stour-valley-br-book-andy-t-wallis-9781445648279
The Branch Lines of East Anglia: Bury, Colne Valley, Saffron Walden and Stour Valley Branches
By the end of the nineteenth century the railway had reached most parts of East Anglia, with two main lines reaching out from London to Norwich, Cambridge and Kings Lynn and with plenty of small secondary and branch lines filling in the gaps between. In this informative volume, Andy T. Wallis uses over 200 fascinating photographs and maps to explore the history of the four lines in north Essex, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, which have all now closed save for one section of the Stour Valley line. Also included are the branches from Long Melford to Bury St Edmunds, the Saffron Walden branch and the former Colne Valley & Halstead Railway from Chappel & Wakes Colne to Haverhill branch. Well-researched and in depth, this volume will appeal not only to steam railway enthusiasts, but also to local historians.
This book takes an in-depth look at the small independent railway that was financed and built by the good citizens of Halstead and its surrounding villages in Essex. The CV&HR came into being in 1860 but struggled financially for a number of years before being put into receivership. However, in the late nineteenth century it made steady progress and reached its financial and traffic peak in the years leading up to the First World War. Absorbed into the LNER in 1923, and passing into state ownership in 1948, the line ceased to carry passengers from 1 January 1962 and closed completely in April 1965. Yet a small portion of the line has since been rebuilt from scratch at Castle Hedingham. The reader is invited to view the stations and locomotives of this historic railway, witnessing the line in its prime and in the years since its closure. Some stations have survived remarkably well, while others have been totally destroyed. But many artefacts from the old line survive as part of the Castle Hedingham restoration undertaken by dedicated enthusiasts. The story of this project and the railway to which it pays homage is revealed through this varied selection of images and their authoritative captions.
By the end of the nineteenth century the railway had reached most parts of East Anglia, with two main lines reaching out from London to Norwich, Cambridge and Kings Lynn, and plenty of small secondary and branch lines filling in the gaps in between. In this informative volume, Andy T. The passenger service on the Bishop's Stortford - Braintree line was withdrawn in 1952 and, after the publication of the Beeching Report in 1963, the same fate was scheduled for the other branches. However the Braintree branch survived and, together with Witham, is a busy commuter line. In this book we take a journey over the line from Bishop's Stortford to Maldon via Braintree and Witham to view what has changed over the last 165 years. Unusually for today the Braintree branch line survives, and fortunately most of the cross-country line is now designated the 'Flitch Way'. The Maldon line, since closure, has been put to many other uses, including use as the town's road bypass.
The Manningtree to Harwich railway branch linked the Great Eastern Main line to the ports of Harwich and, later, Harwich Parkeston Quay. From the early days of the railways the management encouraged boat train services to the continent. These peaked in the 1980s. This book is a journey along the line, visiting all the open and closed stations passed on the route of the line. Contained within are older pictures, from the GER and LNER era, plus steam views from the 1950s and shots of the diesel era and post-electrification era that followed. Although much rationalised, the branch is very much still with us and enjoys frequent electric train services to Manningtree, Colchester and London Liverpool Street.
This fascinating selection of photographs traces some of the many ways in which the Stour Valley Railway has changed and developed over the last century.
This part of the Stour Valley line dates from 1865 and survived for 102 years; the Saffron Walden branch followed a few months later. From the 1920s, both lines fought a rearguard action against road competition. Busy again during the Second World War and for a short period afterwards, both lines benefitted from new diesel motive power by 1959. By then, the writing was on the wall for both lines, despite Haverhill being designated a London overspill town.In this volume, we look at the line between Clare and Shelford, as well as the Saffron Walden branch. Stour Valley Railway Through Time Part 2 takes the reader on a tour of both lines showing through old and contemporary photographs the history of the stations on the lines over the last forty-four years. The remnants from Clare westwards and the Saffron Walden branch are explored fully, showing some pleasing sites as well as modern developments.
The railway at Ipswich dates from 1846 and that at Felixstowe from May 1877. Due to the busy port of Felixstowe the line is still doing extensive business in both passenger and freight traffic today. Like all branch lines the local stations have all lost their goods facilities, but recent investment in the branch has seen new signalling and a loop extension at Derby Road enabling two full-size freightliner trains to pass. In this book we take a journey over the line from Ipswich to Felixstowe stopping at all the stations to view what has changed over the last hundred years. Unusually for today this branch line retains its passenger service, although some stations have closed, such as Orwell, Felixstowe Beach and Pier. But with healthy passenger and freight revenues the branch has a secure future.
