Strolling through the town, his attitude was more that of a flaneur than of a photographer, observing and absorbing the essence of daily life as it was offered to him by his fellow citizens. At the time it was difficult to find safe surroundings in such a highly controlling and controlled society as Soviet-occupied Lithuania. But the streets offered open spaces, diverse passersby, bustling traffic and multiple layers of events. It was here that people tried to carve out and preserve niches for their little moments of joy. Establishing these tiny islands of individuality within such a strict and brutal system sets the frame for Sutkus' street photography and the contrasting realities of his loving observations of everyday life.

I don't like tricks or paparazzi scoops, probably that's why all my best shots are taken on village and city streets, and their main characters are ordinary passersby. While photographing, making inner contact with another person has always been important to me. It seems to be only a momentary meeting, but it is so telling. I trust my intuition, I work totally spontaneously. - Antanas Sutkus

This book is a rich overview of Antanas Sutkus' photos of the people of his native Lithuania during its occupation by the Soviet Union. Sutkus is above all a humanist photographer, his "kosmos" his fellow citizens-children, lovers, the elderly; how they engage with modernity and tradition, nature and the city, and express their identities-all captured in a frank, empathetic style that is far removed from soviet ideals and forms the foundation of the Lithuanian school of photo graphy.

By revealing individual lives of dignity and integrity behind the Iron Curtain, Sutkus' work is as political as it is personal, a record of Lithuania's assertion of its cultural self against the Soviet Union which occupied the country from the Second World War until 1990. That struggle has since come to fruition: in 2004 Lithuania became a member of both NATO and the European Union, and is today one of Europe's fasting growing economies.

Born in 1939, Antanas Sutkus learnt of the mass killing of the Jews already during World War II from his grandparents. He felt bitterly opposed to the humiliation and human destruction that occurred in his homeland Lithuania, experiencing shame and guilt for the atrocities committed behind the Vilijampole ghetto gates and the Ninth Fort. During the "Sonderaktion 1005" between 1942 and '44, German occupation forces tried to vanish the relics of the victims. In 1986 Sutkus began photographing the Kaunas Jews who had escaped death in concentration camps; Pro Memoria presents a selection of these portraits, and evidences the relationships Sutkus forged with his sitters.

As far back as the time of Grand Duke Gediminas (1275-1341), who invited tradesmen and artisans to Lithuania from various European states, the Jews had been offered protection and support there. Over the next 600 years they took root in Lithuania through their accomplishments and prayers, printing workshops and synagogues, libraries and gymnasiums, song and legends. This vibrant branch of Lithuania's cultural history was then violently destroyed when 200,000 Jews were murdered and thrown into pits on forest edges, quarries and death camps. This book is a tribute to these people, and an express ion of attempts at understanding, penitence, purification and rebirth.

If photography can make any claim to universal experience it is through being particular. Sutkus' photographs are as rich in particulars as any in the history of the medium. Rarely are they overtly political, but inevitably the complex historical passage of his country has left its impression upon the fate and hopes, and thus the bodies and faces of those who have come before his camera. - David Campany
