Er war Verleger, unterrichtete und kuratierte Ausstellungen, sogar im Film versuchte er sich. 1933 floh Heartfield vor den Nationalsozialisten zunachst nach Prag, dann nach London. 1950 kehrte er in die DDR zuruck. Heartfields Leben war selbst eine Montage. Sein Gesamtwerk ist bisher noch nicht zu seinem Leben und den politischen Ereignissen in Bezug gesetzt worden.
