This diverse tropical region was integrated into a global trade system, while trade-based cities came to dominate its affairs. Its states became more centralized and absolutist, and its people adopted scriptural faiths of personal morality. The pace of these changes finds parallels only in our own era.   Anthony Reid has analyzed and vividly portrayed this Southeast Asian Age of Commerce in two volumes. The first volume, published in 1988 to great acclaim, explored the physical, material, cultural, and social structures of the region. The concluding volume focuses on the profound changes that defined the Age of Commerce as a period. The spice trade that animated the global boom of the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries made possible revolutionary changes in urbanization, commercialization, state structure, and belief. Islam, Christianity, and Theravada Buddhism made rapid gains in alliance with the new states. Reid discerns common ground between these developments and the forces transforming Europe and Japan but identifies particular limitations on the growth of private capital and the stability of states in Southeast Asia. A final chapter explores the crisis in the mid-seventeenth century that disengaged Southeast Asians from the world economy for the next three centuries.  Anthony Reid is professor of Southeast Asian history, Research School of Pacific Studies, Australian National University.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":49683618038033,"sku":"CIN0300047509A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50012143911185,"sku":"CIN0300047509G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52593669406993,"sku":"NLS9780300047509","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52632374935825,"sku":"GOR003273904","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52633722093841,"sku":"GOR003564915","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53350423036177,"sku":"CIN0300047509VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0300047509.jpg?v=1750738374"},{"product_id":"history-of-southeast-asia-book-anthony-reid-9781118513002","title":"A History of Southeast Asia","description":"2016 PROSE Award Honorable Mention for Textbook in the Humanities A History of Southeast Asia: Critical Crossroads presents a comprehensive history of Southeast Asia from our earliest knowledge of its civilizations and religious patterns up to the present day. The first South-East Asian landfall of sailors from the West since Roman times, it was known as 'Gold Land' before Java and the other Indonesian islands had become known at all outside eastern Asia. Even if nobody in Europe believed Marco Polo's account of people-eaters he encountered there, he made thee island known before any other part of the region. Yet, while Sumatra's coasts exported pepper, gold, and camphor to the world, its heart remained unknown, peopled by savage cannibals or by glittering empires, depending on the point of view. Each time an interpid European travelled over the mountains to the highland plateaus of the Batak and Minangkabau, from the Portuguese Mendes Pinto to the Englishmen Raffles, Burton, and Ward, they believed they were discovering a Shangri-la of unknown civilization. This volume presents the most dramatic accounts of these adventures of many lands.  They range from Marco Polo and an even earlier Arab merchant, Sulayman, to an Italian who helped start a Batak messianic movement by announcing himself as an emissary of 'the king of Rome' (Raja Rum), and the Japanese and British observers of Sumatra's paroxysm of war and revolution in 1945. Taken together they represent an unprecedented journey through Sumatran history through the eyes of outsiders who were often the sold recorders of the island's upheavals. Many of the accounts have been translated into English here for the first time. Professor Anthony Reid has set each of these accounts in its context, and written an introduction to the history of this fascinating and beautiful island.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50114627535121,"sku":"GOR005561098","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9676530808.jpg?v=1750775731"},{"product_id":"southeast-asia-in-the-age-of-commerce-1450-1680-book-anthony-reid-9780300054125","title":"Southeast Asia in the Age of Commerce, 1450-1680","description":"From 1450 to 1680 when the Renaissance and early capitalism were transforming Europe, changes were occuring in Southeast Asia. Apart from William Marsden's great study of 1783, few serious historical works deal with Sumatra's history, and even fewer attempt to describe that history as a coherent whole. Sumatra's rich resources of land and minerals, and its enterprising people, have made it the prosperous frontier of the Archipelago. But the island's people, most of whom were stateless highlanders until the 20th century, were politically united only by the rule of Dutch Batavia and Indonesian Jakarta. Sumatrans have a tradition of defying central authority, and the Acehnese are once again, as in Dutch times, kept in the nation only by force. This book is the fruit of 40 years' study of Sumatran history, from the 16th century to the present. While seeking patterns of coherence in this vast island, it focuses on Aceh, which has both the most illustrious past and the most troubled present of any Sumatran region.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52678124863761,"sku":"NLS9789067182461","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53015525818641,"sku":"NIN9789067182461","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789067182461.jpg?v=1768559266"},{"product_id":"verandah-of-violence-book-anthony-reid-9789971693312","title":"Verandah of Violence","description":"Separatist feeling in Aceh, Indonesia's westernmost province, has deep historical roots but it is often dismissed as a reaction to a heavy-handed military presence in the area since 1989. With Indonesia's 1998 democratisation, expressions of regional feelings and resentment of the military increased throughout the country, and Aceh became the next potential candidate to break away from the Indonesia Republic after East Timor. While Indonesia's claims on Aceh seem securely based in the common struggle for independence from the Dutch, Aceh entered the then newly-independent country of Indonesia after 1945 with an unparalleled history of determination to resist outside domination. This determination was directed against the Dutch in the period 1873-1950, but then turned quickly against the new holders of power in Jakarta. Aceh was largely absent from world headlines until the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. As images of the suffering of the Acehnese people beamed across the world, the need for well-informed international aid for its reconstruction became evident. This timely book on the history of Aceh and the Aceh problem contains a balanced coverage from leading authorities in history, political science and journalism. It is the best introduction to Aceh available in English.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53684262469905,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53684262502673,"sku":"NGR9789971693312","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789971693312.jpg?v=1781782477"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-anthony-reid.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
