Many of prehistoric Britain's most impressive artefacts have come from graves. Interred with both inhumations and cremations, they provide some of the most durable and well-preserved insights into personal identity and the prehistoric life-course, yet they also speak of the care shown to the dead by the living, and of people's relationships with 'things'. Objects matter. This book's title is an intentional play on words. These are objects in burials; but they are also goods, material culture, that must be taken seriously. Within it, we outline the results of the first long-term, large-scale investigation into grave goods during this period, which enables a new level of understanding of mortuary practice and material culture throughout this major period of technological innovation and social transformation. Analysis is structured at a series of different scales, ranging from macro-scale patterning across Britain, to regional explorations of continuity and change, to site-specific histories of practice, to micro-scale analysis of specific graves and the individual objects (and people) within them. We bring these different scales of analysis together in the first ever book focusing specifically on objects and death in later prehistoric Britain. Focusing on six key case study regions, the book innovatively synthesises antiquarian reports, research projects and developer funded excavations. At the same time, it also engages with, and develops, a number of recent theoretical trends within archaeology, including personhood, object biography and materiality, ensuring that it will be of relevance right across the discipline. Its subject matter will also resonate with those working in anthropology, sociology, museology and other areas where death, burial and the role of material culture in people's lives are key contemporary issues.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49552095183121,"sku":"GOR012665726","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49742567080209,"sku":"NGR9781789257472","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1789257476.jpg?v=1751445633"},{"product_id":"past-and-present-book-anwen-cooper-9780954482442","title":"Past and Present","description":"Documenting the results of some ten years of fieldwork, this  volume explores the prehistoric occupation of a small valley near  Broom, on the Bedfordshire gravels. It traces a biography of the  landscape from the later Mesolithic through to the Iron Age, a  sequence that saw profound changes in the character, scale and  temporality of occupation. Undertaken in advance of gravel  extraction, the scale of the fieldwork reported here made it  possibe to track not only the sequence of occupation, but also  how prehistoric communities encountered, appropriated or ignored  the 'archaeology' of their time. Set against sequences from  across southern England, this work sheds important light on the  relationship between local histories and broader processes, and  on the complex and geographically varied ways in which the past  itself was understood in the past.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50224580559121,"sku":"GOR013892389","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0954482441.jpg?v=1751077699"},{"product_id":"prehistory-in-practice-a-multi-stranded-analysis-of-british-archaeology-1975-201-book-anwen-cooper-9781407310862","title":"Prehistory in Practice: A Multi-Stranded Analysis of British Archaeology 1975-2010","description":"This study examines developments in British archaeology over the last 30 years or so (between 1975-2010), focusing in particular on transformations in prehistoric research. Ultimately it seeks to foreground the extent to which recent historical developments (at all levels of the discipline and in various working contexts) are implicated in contemporary research practices. Advocating the need for taking a multi-stranded and interdisciplinary approach, the author consulted a range of sources - digital archives, documentary and oral material - and draws on ideas from archaeology, sociology, anthropology and oral history. Through a detailed analysis of a leading disciplinary newsletter, key concerns are highlighted which have shaped archaeological practice over this period, and how particular roles and relationships have been defined and developed. By examining records and primary research outcomes of British prehistoric fieldwork, the writer develops a thorough understanding of how both data production and accounts of British prehistory have transformed. Based on evidence from 'life-history' interviews undertaken with prehistorians across the discipline, themes are explored that connect the diverse experiences of these practitioners:the notions that archaeology has undergone a process of 'professionalisation' over this period, and that it is chronically (and indeed increasingly) 'fragmented' socially. The author considers not only the varied ways in which British prehistorianshave understood these issues,but also how such beliefs actually operate to shape research practices.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51212228985105,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51212232065297,"sku":"NIN9781407310862","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52424158413073,"sku":"NLS9781407310862","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1407310860.jpg?v=1751114489"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-anwen-cooper.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
