La domus del Mitreo a Tarquinia presents the results of archaeological research in Tarquinia from 2016 to 2018. The excavation of a large complex provided us with rich documentation of Roman Tarquinia between the 3rd century BCE and Late Antiquity. Votive nails inscribed in Latin and a fountain with a water reservoir concealed in its walls are original features of this building, from which a statue of Mithras also came to light. The results show two main phases: one in the 2nd century BCE and another in the Augustan Age. The final phases are also important: in the 4th century a collapse occurred and the area was raised and flattened almost everywhere and finally abandoned in the 7th century.
Why did the Romans worship a Persian god? This book presents a new reading of the Mithraic iconography taking into account that the cult had a prophecy. It is likely that the Mithraic reliefs alluded to it and the scenes in the upper panels depict the Golden Age which was the final result of many apocalyptic, prophetic texts including the 4th Eclogue of Virgil. The Avesta, the Vedas, and Herodotus associate Mithras with the morning star and the dawn and this god was the mediator between darkness and light. Additionally, Mithras was a protector of rulers and, similar to Apollo, arbiter and mediator between opposite elements, and saviour of humankind. For these reasons he was ideal to become the god of Augustus and the Roman emperors.
Roman and Lucanian Grumentum (Potenza province, southern Italy) represents a good archaeological case-study of a site over which no modern city has been built. It was abandoned at the end of the 11th century AD and used as a cultivation area for centuries. The sites provide a highly interesting sequence of data, concerning the first human settlements, the 'Enotrian' and 'Lucanian' phases, the founding of the first city (3rd century BC), the Romanization and the founding of the Roman colony around 50 BC. This book presents the proceedings of a conference on the sites, held in Grumento Nova itself in April 2010. The range of topics is large, from stratigraphical excavations to history, from epigraphy to archaeometry. The chronological range is also wide, from prehistory to modern age.
This book presents results from a series of large-scale geomagnetic surveys undertaken across the entire area of ancient Tarquinia - an area of 104 hectares. These results allow a better understanding of the road network, city gates, insulae, the orientation of neighborhoods, as well as other features. Monuments and structures identified include the Roman forum, the basilica, the macellum, the likely horrea, and a semicircular plaza. A sparsely built-up area in the eastern part of the city allows for historical considerations on the 6th century urban plan, when the circuit of walls was conceived with the idea of accommodating more people than those who actually settled in Tarquinia. Geophysical surveys indicate that the urban layout was not radically changed until the end of antiquity, while the phenomenon of Romanization can be recognized in the creation of structures such as the forum or the macellum, in the restructuring of buildings, like the "domus of the Mithraeum," or in the paving of pre-existing roads. Overall, this book provides important new insights into the ancient city of Tarquinia, as well as a case study for the use of geomagnetic survey as an archaeological tool.
grumentum-and-roman-cities-in-southern-italy-grumentum-e-le-citta-romane-nell-it-book-attilio-mastrocinque-9781407315089
Grumentum and Roman Cities in Southern Italy/Grumentum e le città romane nell'Italia meridionale

Grumentum, in the inland of Basilicata, was a Lucanian city and then a Roman colony. This volume publishes the papers presented at two conferences, held in 2012 and 2015. Their aim was to discuss the results of the recent archaeological research in Grumentum and other sites in Lucania. The results are many, and include a new numismatic document concerning the Lucanian city and the reconstruction of the central area of the Roman town from the Late Republican phases to the Augustean project of the new Forum. The most important monuments are studied and their features and transformations are presented according to a chronological frame provided by the finds and their date. Typological studies and chemical and physical analyses have yielded new data which improves our knowledge of the economy, trade, diet and culture of Grumentum. Finally, the transformation of this city into a Christian community is highlighted by new discoveries and findings.

Contributors: Lorna Anguilano, Luca Arioli, Paola Artoni, Antonella Arzone, Luca Bellucci, Riccardo Bertolazzi, Giulia Bison, Silvia Braito, Alfredo Buonopane, Lianka Camerlengo, Federica Candelato, Antonio Capano, Cristina Di Lorenzo, Federica Fenzi, Helena Fracchia, Ugo Fusco, Maria Pina Gargano, Maurizio Gualtieri, Christian Laes, Barbara Lepri, Chiara Maria Marchetti, Attilio Mastrocinque, Bruna Nardelli, Monica Pagan, Salvatore Pagliuca, Daniela Pizzolato, Jessica Pompele, Lara Pozzan, Antonio Priore, Carlotta Righetti, Roberto Rotondo, Fabio Saggioro, Leonardo Salari, Massimo Saracino, Alessio Sass , Marianna Scapini, Rossana Scavone, Fiammetta Soriano, Roby Stuani, Francesco Tarlano and Elisa Zentilini

In this work, Attilio Mastrocinque cautions against an approach to Mithraism based on the belief that this mystic cult resembles Christianity. While both Christian and pagan authors testified that Mithraic elements were indeed borrowed, according to Attilio Mastrocinque this was only done by some gnostic Christians. He counters that Roman Empire ideology and religion provide better clues on how to approach the matter, contending too that Virgil proves to be more important than the Avesta in understanding Mithraic iconography. The meaning of the central scene - the Tauroctony - thus becomes clear when the Roman triumph's central act of bull sacrifice is thought of as just that, with Mithras playing the role of victor as author of this success. The episodes depicted on many reliefs relate to a prophecy known to Firmicus Maternus and other Christian polemists, and which foretold the coming of a saviour, i.e. the first emperor, when Saturn returns and Apollo-Mithras will rule.
Iconographies and texts that appear in some series of magical gems are presented in this fascinating study.
