The concept of cultural memory is used to examine the ways in which journalists, writers of fiction, scholars and others referred to, described and explained the Black Death from around 1800 onwards. The distant medieval past was often used to make sense of aspects of the present, from the cholera pandemics of the nineteenth-century to the climate crisis of the early twenty-first century. A series of overlapping myths related to the Black Death emerged based only in part on historical evidence. Cultural memory circulates in a variety of media from the scholarly article to the video game and online video clip, and the connections and differences between mediated representations of the Black Death are considered. The Black Death is one of the most well-known aspects of the medieval world, and this study of its associated memories and myths reveals the depth and complexity of interactions between the distant and recent past.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49741596360977,"sku":"NGR9783030890575","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52403441107217,"sku":"NLS9783030890575","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52760934842641,"sku":"NIN9783030890575","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3030890570.jpg?v=1751252375"},{"product_id":"peasants-and-production-in-the-medieval-north-east-book-ben-dodds-9781843832874","title":"Peasants and Production in the Medieval North-East","description":"The study draws on sources hitherto unused by historians of England to examine the patterns of change and the scope for adaptability in the peasant economy in the area between the Tyne and Tees during the late middle ages. It reaches two main conclusions. The first is that the peasant economy in this region of England was profoundly affected by war in the early fourteenth century and then disease with the arrival of the Black Death in 1349. This calls into question historians' reliance on theories of overpopulation in explaining the 'crisis' of the late middle ages: even at its medieval peak, the population of northeast England was sparse by comparison with areas further south. Nor did the availability of land and improved living standards lead to demographic recovery in the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. The second main conclusion is that, despite their vulnerability to crises, peasant cultivators were highly responsive to change. Far from being primitive subsistence farmers oblivious to the market and its signals, medieval peasants in the Durham region were subtle and successful decision-makers regarding the production and marketing of their output.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52530396627217,"sku":"NLS9781843832874","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53037006061841,"sku":"NIN9781843832874","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781843832874.jpg?v=1760652554"},{"product_id":"myths-and-memories-of-the-black-death-book-ben-dodds-9783030890605","title":"Myths and Memories of the Black Death","description":"This book explores modern representations of the Black Death, a medieval pandemic.
