By placing literary studies in dialogue with political theory, philosophy, and the history of ideas, the book reclaims a substantive reformist language that we have ignored to our own loss. This reformist idiom made it possible to imagine the state as a speculative and aspirational idea--as a fully realized form of life rather than as an uninspiring ensemble of administrative procedures and bureaucratic processes. This volume traces the resonances of this idiom from the Victorian period to modernism, ranging from Mary Augusta Ward, George Gissing, and H. G. Wells, to Edward Carpenter, E. M. Forster, and Virginia Woolf. Compared to this reformist language, the economism that dominates current debates about the welfare state signals an impoverishment that is at once intellectual, cultural, and political. Critiquing the shortcomings of the welfare state comes naturally to us, but we often struggle to offer up convincing defences of its principles and aims. This book intervenes in these debates by urging a richer understanding of critique: if we want to defend the state, Kohlmann argues, we need to learn to think about it again.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49531030110481,"sku":"GOR013711637","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49666856911121,"sku":"GOR013766405","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52734542577937,"sku":"NIN9780198836179","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198836171.jpg?v=1750694497"},{"product_id":"the-people-and-british-literature-book-benjamin-kohlmann-9781009299688","title":"'The People' and British Literature","description":"Why do invocations of 'the people' carry such force in current political discourse and public debate? This book offers an ambitiously transhistorical account of the ways that 'the people' has figured in British literature and culture. Ranging from the later mediaeval period to the present, the twenty-three chapters draw on substantial new research to show that the figure of the people has been put to reactionary and progressive ends and that its meanings are less obvious and fixed than contemporary commentators would have us believe. Providing a much-needed critical prehistory for our own current moment, the contributors also build on ideas and methods from other disciplines, such as political theory, sociology, and media history. As such, this important new volume will be of interest to a wide range of readers across periods and disciplines.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51883500273937,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51883500601617,"sku":"NGR9781009299688","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52821043806481,"sku":"NLS9781009299688","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52832731922705,"sku":"NIN9781009299688","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781009299688.jpg?v=1764845236"},{"product_id":"history-of-1930s-british-literature-book-benjamin-kohlmann-9781108474535","title":"A History of 1930s British Literature","description":"This History offers a new and comprehensive picture of 1930s British literature. The '30s have often been cast as a literary-historical anomaly, either as a 'low, dishonest decade', a doomed experiment in combining art and politics, or as a 'late modernist' afterthought to the intense period of artistic experimentation in the 1920s. By contrast, the contributors to this volume explore the contours of a 'long 1930s' by repositioning the decade and its characteristic concerns at the heart of twentieth-century literary history. This book expands the range of writers covered, moving beyond a narrow focus on towering canonical figures to draw in a more diverse cast of characters, in terms of race, gender, class, and forms of artistic expression. The book's four sections emphasize the decade's characteristic geographical and sexual identities; the new media landscapes and institutional settings its writers operated in; questions of commitment and autonomy; and British writing's international entanglements.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52477136437521,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52477137781009,"sku":"NLS9781108474535","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781108474535.jpg?v=1759845143"},{"product_id":"committed-styles-book-benjamin-kohlmann-9780198715467","title":"Committed Styles","description":"Committed Styles offers a new understanding of the literature of the 1930s and its relationship to modernism, exploring the tensions between formal experimentation and political vision that lie at the heart of the politicised literature of the 1930s.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53032430207249,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53032430305553,"sku":"GOR014707161","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780198715467.jpg?v=1768652878"},{"product_id":"revolutionary-subjects-book-benjamin-kohlmann-9781804297278","title":"Revolutionary Subjects","description":"A literary history spanning borders and centuries to explore radicalization as portrayed in fiction","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53372985049361,"sku":"NGR9781804297278","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53680293740817,"sku":"GOR014999601","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781804297278.jpg?v=1775178790"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-benjamin-kohlmann.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
