Although his suggestion that it be called 'Guy Fawkes' School' was turned down, Brickendonbury Manor, near Hertford, was chosen and named 'Station XVII'. Kim Philby, Guy's friend from his Cambridge days, was given the task of drawing up its syllabus. Under the command of Frederick Peters, RN, instructors were recruited to train saboteurs from the Allied forces in both the theory and practice of using plastic explosives and time-delay devices to destroy electrical installations, mines, engineering works, canals, ships, port facilities, railway engines and railway lines. Heydrich's assassins, Josef Gabcik and Jan Kubis, were trained here, as were 'The Heroes of Telemark', the dozens of men sent to destroy Norway's Heavy Water plant. The Abwehr, the German Intelligence Service, rather than use their own saboteurs, paid young Spanish men to undertake over sixty sabotage attacks on military installations and shipping with limited success. The Italian Decima Flotilla MAS, a specialist team of underwater frogmen, launched eight attacks which were relatively successful and Spanish Falangists made several unsuccessful attempts. The British Secret Intelligence Service endeavoured to stop or at least limit such attacks. Using contemporary files from the National Archives in Kew, autobiographies, biographies, histories and newspaper articles, this documentary history investigates the successes and failures of these attacks on Gibraltar and the roles played by intelligence officers, agents, double agents in discovering and preventing such acts. The book sheds light on an unusual and largely overlooked aspect of Gibraltar's history.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49582159397137,"sku":"GOR013555577","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0244850194.jpg?v=1750844552"},{"product_id":"churchill-and-stalin-s-secret-agents-book-bernard-o-connor-9781781550021","title":"Churchill and Stalin's Secret Agents","description":"Following the German invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941, Churchill and Stalin secretly agreed that Britain would infiltrate Soviet agents into occupied Western Europe. Liaison began between the NKVD and the SOE, each country's secret service. Transported in convoys across the Arctic Ocean and often attacked by German U-Boats, thirty-four men and women arrived in Scotland. To stop people finding out that Britain was helping the Communists, the agents were given false identities and provided with accommodation and training at remote country houses in southern England, including Beaulieu. Codenamed PICKAXES, they were sent for parachute practice at Ringway aerodrome, provided with documents, cover stories and wireless sets and sent on clandestine missions into France, Belgium, Holland, Austria, Germany and Italy. Whilst most were sent from RAF Tempsford, Churchill's Most Secret airfield, one was sent by boat across the Channel and another by submarine into Northern Italy. Only a few survived the war as most were caught, interrogated and executed. King Charles I's master of ordnance would have liaised with Sir Charles Smyth, the owner of land in Bouldon, a small hamlet about 10 km north-northeast of Ludlow Castle, for a charcoal iron furnace to be constructed on the bank above Pye brook. Ironstone was already being worked on the upper slopes of the Brown Clee and supplied to furnaces on the River Stour near Bridgnorth. Woodland on the lower slopes of the Clee Hills was being coppiced for the charcoal used to heat the iron. Local limestone quarries supplied the flux which helped separate the iron from the waste rock. Water was available from the brooks that drained the Clee Hills.A charcoal iron furnace was constructed in Bouldon which manufactured cannons and cannonballs for Ludlow and Bridgnorth castles. Later it produced pig iron which was reputed to be the best in Britain. Although the furnace changed hands several times, it provided wealth for its owners for over 150 years and stimulated the local economy by employing local men not just in the furnace but also in the casting shed, in the bell pit mines on the Clee Hills, the owners of packhorses and donkeys used to carry the ironstone and cordwood to the furnace site, the 'charkers' who made the charcoal, cartwrights, wheelwrights, carpenters, carters, horse owners, blacksmiths, forgers, accountants and others.Bernard O'Connor provides a detailed and illustrated account of an important part of Corvedale's industrial history.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49683716374801,"sku":"GOR013770100","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1716627737.jpg?v=1751444871"},{"product_id":"churchill-s-most-secret-airfield-book-bernard-o-connor-9781445606903","title":"Churchill's Most Secret Airfield","description":"Designed by illusionist Jasper Maskelyne, RAF Tempsford was constructed to give overflying enemy aircraft the impression it was disused. But despite the attention of Churchill and George VI, the airfield's secrets have long remained an untold chapter in the story of the war. Based on over a decade's extensive research, Churchill's Most Secret Airfield: RAF Tempsford is filled with intrigue, suspense, heartbreak, and humour. It is a fascinating account of a deadly serious business. Bernard O'Connor has been a teacher for almost forty years and is the author of Agent Rose and Churchill's Angels, also for Amberley. He lives in Bedfordshire. RAF Tempsford is in walking distance of his home.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49732422107409,"sku":"NGR9781445606903","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50142514184465,"sku":"GOR006302387","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1445606909.jpg?v=1761645424"},{"product_id":"operation-lena-and-hitler-s-plots-to-blow-up-britain-book-bernard-o-connor-9781398103290","title":"Operation Lena and Hitler's Plots to Blow Up Britain","description":"Home-grown terrorists equipped by a foreign power are not a new phenomenon. During the Second World War, Hitler's Germany made sustained efforts to inflict a terror campaign on the streets of Britain through the use of secret agents and agents provocateurs. The aim was to blow up military, industrial, transport and telecommunication targets, to lower morale among the civilian population and disrupt the war effort. Even before the outbreak of war, the Nazis provided the IRA with assistance for their plan to sabotage the British mainland. Prior to their planned invasion in the summer of 1940, the Nazis were also keen to recruit members of the Welsh and Scottish Nationalist Parties to engage in sabotaging British targets and, over the course of the war, infiltrated dozens of trained agents from countries including Norway, Denmark, Holland, France and Cuba. What happened to the myriad plots to blow up Britain? We know that intelligence obtained from decrypted enemy messages via Bletchley Park and double agents like ZIGZAG, SUMMER and TATE alerted MI5 to some of these spies' arrivals, but what about the others? And how successful were MI5's efforts to fake acts of sabotage and arrange media coverage to fool the enemy into thinking their agents were still at large and on task? In this book, Bernard O'Connor, a noted wartime espionage historian, tells the complete story of the successes and failures of the Nazi terror offensive on mainland Britain during 1938-1944.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49734594134289,"sku":"NGR9781398103290","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1398103292.jpg?v=1777714979"},{"product_id":"churchill-s-school-for-saboteurs-book-bernard-o-connor-9781445642277","title":"Churchill's School For Saboteurs","description":"Following the outbreak of the Second World War, Guy Burgess, an officer in Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service, convinced his superiors that a special school be opened to teach sabotage. Although his suggestion that it be called ‘Guy Fawkes’ School’ was turned down, Brickendonbury Manor, near Hertford, was chosen and named ‘Station XVII’. Kim Philby, Guy’s friend from his Cambridge days, was given the task of drawing up its syllabus. Under the command of Frederick Peters, RN, instructors were recruited to train saboteurs from the Allied forces in both the theory and practice of using plastic explosives and timedelay devices to destroy electrical installations, mines, engineering works, canals, ships, port facilities, railway engines and railway lines. Heydrich’s assassins, Josef Gabcík and Jan Kubiš, were trained here, as were ‘The Heroes of Telemark’, the dozens of men sent to destroy Norway’s Heavy Water plant. This book investigates the history of Brickendonbury, tells stories about some of its personnel and assesses the successes and failures of some of the estimated 1,200 saboteurs sent into occupied Europe.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49921391624465,"sku":"GOR006776892","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50383483011345,"sku":"CIN1445642271VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50450520572177,"sku":"GOR007566002","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53101160038673,"sku":"GOR013453113","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1445642271.jpg?v=1777715057"},{"product_id":"operation-champagne-book-bernard-o-connor-9781447663133","title":"Operation CHAMPAGNE","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50409704390929,"sku":"GOR013123770","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51092862238993,"sku":"NIN9781447663133","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1447663136.jpg?v=1751453194"},{"product_id":"raf-tempsford-book-bernard-o-connor-9781445600710","title":"RAF Tempsford","description":"Designed by illusionist Jasper Maskelyne, RAF Tempsford was constructed to give overflying enemy aircraft the impression it was disused.
