Often compared to his contemporary, the American artist John Singer Sargent, Joaqu n Sorolla (1863-1923) was a master draftsman and painter of landscapes, formal portraits, and monumental, historically themed canvases. Highly influenced by French Impressionism, the Valencian artist was a master plein-air painter known for his luminous seaside scenes of frolicking youths and for vivid depictions of Spanish rural life and its pleasures and customs. This beautifully designed and produced volume brings together one hundred of Sorolla's major paintings, selected by his great-granddaughter Blanca Pons-Sorolla, the foremost authority on the artist. Benefiting from close proximity to the artist and his personal archives, she presents an in-depth essay that explores Sorolla's life, work, and remarkable international legacy. With virtually all of the artist's previous publications now out of print, this much-anticipated volume is an important addition to the literature on this great Spanish master.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49727009161489,"sku":"CIN0847839338G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49730631565585,"sku":"NGR9780847839339","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50215074758929,"sku":"GOR008999774","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51008917045521,"sku":"NIN9780847839339","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52652474958097,"sku":"GOR012515851","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53475742515473,"sku":"CIN0847839338VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0847839338.jpg?v=1751450322"},{"product_id":"sorolla-book-blanca-pons-sorolla-9780847866489","title":"Sorolla","description":"Like Claude Monet s celebrated plein air landscapes at Giverny, the series collected in this book represents among the best-loved examples of Joaquin Sorolla s (1863-1923) work, and a window into the Spanish painter s quest to capture the essence of a garden. Described by Monet as  the master of light,  Sorolla and his landscapes, formal portraits, and historically themed canvases drew comparisons to contemporary American painter John Singer Sargent. Sorolla had achieved renown on both sides of the Atlantic for grand scenes of Spanish life when he began a personal series of garden works, presented completely for the first time in this publication. Painted at the palaces of La Granja and the Alcazar in Seville, the Alhambra and Generalife in Granada, and at the painter s home in Madrid, these Impressionist works allowed Sorolla to apply his signature loose brushwork and training as a photographer s lighting assistant to gardens and the sculptures, architecture, and sitters that frame and animate them. Sorolla depicted reflections in fountains and pools, the sunlight dappling his glamorous sitters, sprays of orange blossoms, and shaded blue-and-white tile as he endeavoured to render the radiant peace of a summer afternoon.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49732017619217,"sku":"NGR9780847866489","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50730770432273,"sku":"GOR011536547","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51180529778961,"sku":"CIN0847866483G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53028208640273,"sku":"NIN9780847866489","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53262884438289,"sku":"GOR014842852","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0847866483.jpg?v=1750883383"},{"product_id":"sorolla-and-the-paris-years-book-blanca-pons-sorolla-9780847848355","title":"Sorolla and the Paris Years","description":"A native of Valencia, Spanish Impressionist Joaquin Sorolla (1863-1923) first went to Paris in 1885 as a young artist at the age of twenty-three. He exhibited at the international salons, winning the Grand Prix at the Exposition Universelle in 1900, and in 1906, he exhibited for the first time at the Galerie Georges Petit, one of the principal galleries of the Impressionists. The exhibition was a resounding success and helped establish Sorolla's international reputation. Known for his vigorous compositions, unusual color palette, and loose, radiant brush strokes, Sorolla's sundrenched landscapes, beach scenes, and luminous portraits even impressed such contemporaries as Claude Monet. Richly illustrated and with newly researched essays by noted scholars, this important book reveals much new information about Sorolla's activities and relationships with other artists in Europe. Included are more than one hundred paintings reflecting the artist's career, from his early work in Paris in which the influence of the French Impressionists is clearly evident, to the distinctive pictures that reflect his mature and celebrated style.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49778180882705,"sku":"NGR9780847848355","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50977513144593,"sku":"CIN0847848353G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51157915107601,"sku":"GOR009832727","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51607688315153,"sku":"GOR013056669","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0847848353.jpg?v=1751296928"},{"product_id":"joaquin-sorolla-book-blanca-pons-sorolla-9780856676055","title":"Joaquin Sorolla","description":"Joaquin Sorolla Sorolla (1863-1923) was one of the greatest natural painters of all time. Born in Valencia, this Spanish painter was active mainly in his native town and in Madrid. He was a prolific and popular artist, working on a wide range of subjects - genre, portraits and landscapes - and his impressionist style marked by luminous colouring and vigorous brushwork earned him a considerable reputation throughout Europe and America. He was also a highly sought after portraitist.  Early in his career Sorolla mainly portrayed religious and social scenes before developing his own plein-air painting from the 1900s onwards, painting townscapes, garden scenes, nature studies, seascapes and beach scenes with an extraordinary ability of capturing light. From 1901 to 1905 he created 500 works adhering to his ideal of 'natural painting'. From these paintings came the body of work shown in a series of shows in Paris, Berlin, London, New York and Chicago. Sorolla was then commissioned to create a multi-panelled work entitled Visions of Spain for the Hispanic Society in New York. He laboured on this from 1912-19 after which time he painted very little. He died in 1923. This new, extensively illustrated monograph, written by the artist's great granddaughter, provides a comprehensive overview of his work including a fully illustrated chronology.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50370576974097,"sku":"CIN0856676055A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52105197453585,"sku":"CIN0856676055G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0856676055.jpg?v=1751139842"},{"product_id":"sorolla-catalogue-raisonne-book-blanca-pons-sorolla-9788412010794","title":"Sorolla Catalogue Raisonne","description":"- Volume 1 of Joaquin Sorolla's catalogue raisonn  is the first part of the culmination of a project initiated by Francisco PonsSorolla and Blanca Pons-Sorolla, which assembles all currently known works by the painter - some 4,000 pieces. Sorolla painted directly in the open air at La Granja, the Alcazar in Seville, the Alhambra and Generalife in Granada and at his house in Madrid. These are paintings in which we can observe the artists' interest in portraying the qualities of light and shade and different watery reflections by means of a sketch-like technique based on the use of very loose brushstrokes and striking colours.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53599881429265,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53599881462033,"sku":"GOR014975567","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9788495241986.jpg?v=1779856426"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-blanca-pons-sorolla.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
