There is a wealth of folklore, legend and tradition and literature associated with them.These colourful characters taught, looked after the sick, settled feuds, wrote histories and poetry. Some endured incredible hardship, living in hermitages on barren cliff tops, such as on Skellig. Many, such as Cillian and Columbanus, travelled thousands of miles to spread the Christian faith, establishing large, powerful monasteries across Europe.    This book provides a fascinating anthology of the lives and times of Ireland's holy men and women. Accessible in style, with plenty of anecdotal evidence, it gives an insight into the early origins of Christianity and the role of the religious in Irish society.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49606618186001,"sku":"GOR002674833","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50577901486353,"sku":"GOR004246505","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53397357035793,"sku":"CIN0862787467VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0862787467.jpg?v=1751422232"},{"product_id":"discover-derry-book-brian-lacey-9780862785963","title":"Discover Derry","description":"Derry is a city that inspires many images, often conflicting. Adomn n came from what is now County Donegal. He was one of the most significant churchmen and intellectuals of the seventh century. The copying and re-copying of his written works meant that, in medieval times, his reputation spread widely on the Continent. He was, in modern parlance, an 'all-rounder' monk, priest, manager, writer, historian, lawmaker and diplomat, to name just a few things. He was the author of one of the first laws, anywhere, for the protection of non-combatants in times of conflict, and compiled an exegetical 'guide-book' to the 'sites' of the Holy Land - the oldest surviving text of its kind from anywhere in Western Europe. He also wrote a major hagiographical 'Life' of his predecessor and distant relative Columba. So powerful and influential a text was that book that it all but shoved Adomn n himself out of the limelight, in favour of his illustrious forerunner. Although much has been written about individual aspects of Adomn n's career, this is the first study to outline the totality of his life and reputation - in so far as we can know it","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51517397598481,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51517397664017,"sku":"GOR011884142","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1846829631.jpg?v=1751432783"},{"product_id":"cenel-neogain-and-the-donegal-kingdom-ad-800-book-brian-lacey-9781801511711","title":"Cenel Neogain and the Donegal Kingdom Ad 800","description":"Cené l nEó gain, a royal dynasty from Inishowen in Donegal, defeated its previously more successful opponent, Cené l Conaill - also from Donegal - at the battle of Cló itech in AD 789. All changed following that battle. From then on, the Cené l nEó gain kingdom, known as ' Ailech' , spread across Counties Derry, Tyrone (giving that territory its name), into Armagh, and dominated the whole territory of Ulster. It also attained, alternately, the higher kingship of Tara. After surnames appeared c.1000, the Mac Lochlainns and O' Neills became Cené l nEó gain' s leading families. Meanwhile, the defeated Cené l Conaill struggled to maintain some degree of prestige following the emergence of a previously minor, upstart kingdom, originally from west Donegal, the Sí l Lugdach. By c.1200 the O' Neills and the leading Sí l Lugdach family, the O' Donnells, were in position to rule the whole of Ulster until the English conquest c.1600. This book outlines in detail how that situation came about.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51630145470737,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51630145667345,"sku":"NGR9781801511711","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1801511713.jpg?v=1751631924"},{"product_id":"medieval-and-monastic-derry-book-brian-lacey-9781846823831","title":"Medieval and Monastic Derry","description":"According to legend, Derry originated as a monastery founded by St. Columba\/Colum Cille. That story was almost certainly a later rationalization and simplification of a complex reality arising from Derry's capture from the Cenel nEnnai kingdom in the late 6th century by the saint's people, the powerful Cenel Conaill. By the 9th century, Derry was in the hands of the latter's conquering enemies - Cenel nEogain of Inishowen. They further developed the Columban legend for propaganda purposes. In the 12th century, under the dynamic Mac Lochlainn kings, the enlarged settlement at Derry became a center of significant political and cultural influence and the headquarters of the Columban churches in Ireland. Later, with the defeat of the Mac Lochlainns, Derry too declined. It would enjoy a brief revival in later medieval times under the O'Donnells, who also harnessed the Columban legend. The settlement was captured by the English in 1600, however, bringing about the end of its Gaelic identity. Author Brian Lacey has been writing about medieval Derry since the 1980s, and in this book, he revisits those studies - revising and augmenting them, examining previously little-used sources and emphasizing Derry's changing fortunes in the contexts of contemporary secular politics. *** Lacey is one of the most proficient historians writing currently on the north of Ireland in the early Middle Ages. As this is a field that demands a high level of technical expertise, it is impressive that he has been able to produce a book that will be of interest both to specialists and nonspecialists alike. Lacey is particularly strong on the politics of the place: the manner in which secular and ecclesiastical interests meshed or came into conflict during the long centuries of its existence as a native town. In short, this is an important and accessible study for anyone interested in the history of one of the island's most vibrant cities. - The Catholic Historical Review, Vol. 101, No. 3, Summer 2015  Subject: History, Medieval Studies, Irish Studies, Religious Studies]","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51851509858577,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51851509956881,"sku":"GOR014428076","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781846823831.jpg?v=1753633105"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-brian-lacey.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
