This book documents Morris' half-century-long career and presents her individual abstract sculptures against the backdrop of artistic developments.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49563005452561,"sku":"CIN1883124220G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1883124220.jpg?v=1757413030"},{"product_id":"clement-greenberg-book-bruce-guenther-9780691090498","title":"Clement Greenberg","description":"Clement Greenberg (1909-1994) is the most renowned American art critic of the twentieth century and the first to treat New York modern artists as an independent school. In the work of Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, and sculptor David Smith, Greenberg saw a vitality absent from the art of postwar Europe. His writings helped transform the bohemian colony huddled around Manhattan's grimy Eighth Street into the churning center of an international movement. Far less known is the fact that Greenberg was also a major collector; because of his insistence on anonymity when loaning pieces to museums, the scope of his private collection surprises many. Recently acquired by the Portland Art Museum, his incredible collection is now coming to the public in a multi-venue traveling exhibition. This extraordinary book illustrates, in color and for the first time, the collection's 155 works. Spanning five decades of American art, it features some of the twentieth century's finest artists. Works by Pollock, Helen Frankenthaler, Hans Hofmann, and Adolph Gottlieb represent Abstract Expressionism. Paintings by Jules Olitski, Kenneth Noland, and others represent the Color Field movement, in which artists used liquid pure color on raw canvas. One highlight is Noland's first \"target\" painting--a 1958 masterpiece exploring the flatness of paint. The collection also includes excellent examples of the movement Greenberg dubbed Post-Painterly Abstraction, including pieces by Walter Darby Bannard and Larry Poons. The works Greenberg collected reflect his ideas, passions, and personal associations. They reveal him as a reviewer and intellectual but also as a friend to the artists. Many of the more than two hundred color plates are accompanied by Greenberg's comments about the artists--painters and sculptors now being rediscovered by young contemporary artists exploring formalism, the nature of paint, and the evolution of modern art. The text includes discussions of Greenberg's significance to criticism, his famous studio visits, and the controversy attached to his work, as well as short biographies of each artist. Spafford","description":"Michael C. Spafford, one of the most respected and admired painters in the Northwest, has created a cohesive body of work of rare intelligence and power. Now professor emeritus at the University of Washington School of Art, he began teaching in 1963 and was an influential and provocative teacher. Spafford remains an active painter who has never shied away from bold, often brutal universal themes. The rigorous physicality and formal invention inherent in his work enhance the viewer’s visual understanding as well as the potency of the image.  Widely exhibited, awarded, and collected, Spafford is best known for his fascination with myths of origin and heroic endeavor. His paintings, drawings, prints, and murals depict vivid episodes from epic poems and Greco-Roman mythology: “Leda and the Swan,” The Iliad and The Odyssey, “The Twelve Labors of Heracles,” to mention a few. Many of these narratives were revisited by Spafford over time in different formats in search of a better visual vignette. He strips these well-known narratives to their most emblematic elements, depicting them in a radically abstracted form, which illuminates these stories in a direct and visually affecting way. This book, the first monograph devoted to the artist, seeks to glimpse the breadth of Spafford’s explorations.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50377608888593,"sku":"CIN0998681792G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0998681792.jpg?v=1767175443"},{"product_id":"norman-lundin-book-bruce-guenther-9780295986784","title":"Norman Lundin","description":"At first glance, a casual observer might assume that Norman Lundin's recent paintings are about things. That would be a mistake. Instead, silence and space form a void that is shaped and manipulated by the things that displace it and defined by the light and atmosphere captured in its gravitational field. This void is the true subject of Lundin's paintings.  Lundin's fascination with still life, landscape, and compositional integrity reaches its peak in a series of paintings depicting objects arranged along a shelf, in front of mullioned windows that allow glimpses of a landscape beyond. This volume includes an interview with the artist and illustrates works ranging from 1973 to 2006.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50464879902993,"sku":"CIN0295986786G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0295986786.jpg?v=1757417350"},{"product_id":"fifty-northwest-artists-book-bruce-guenther-9780877012894","title":"Fifty Northwest Artists","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51327636504849,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51327638929681,"sku":"CIN087701289XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53247249056017,"sku":"CIN087701289XVG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/087701289X.jpg?v=1751298136"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-bruce-guenther.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
