They look like bugs. They look like Crustaceans. They lived in the ancient seas before the Permian extinction, so long before the dinosaurs. And, now, scientists exploring newly discovered deep, deep aquifers, have found living Trilobites. What if Trilobites became a thing . a fad . a meme . a pop culture craze? Existing doctrinal and comparative analyses have tended to come out strongly in favour of, or against, self-declaration. This book offers a socio-legal alternative which focuses on how self-declaration is experienced, on an embodied level, by trans and gender diverse people. It presents research conducted in Denmark, which became the first European state to adopt self-declaration in June 2014. By analysing Danish law through a Foucauldian framework which brings together socio-, feminist, and trans legal scholarship on embodiment and jurisdiction, the book offers the first empirically based and theoretically informed analysis of self-declaration. It draws upon legal consciousness, affect theory, vulnerability, and governmentality literatures to argue that the jurisdictional boundaries which existed between law and medicine were maintained throughout the reform process. This limited the impact of the legislation, enabling access to health care to be restricted in the same year in which amending legal gender status was liberalised. As the list of states that have adopted self-declaration increases, this intervention offers activists and policymakers insights which might shape how they respond to similar reform proposals in the future. A timely and important assessment, this book will appeal to researchers and practitioners working in trans, gender, feminist legal, and socio-legal studies.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50698415407377,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50698418782481,"sku":"NGR9780367255169","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52137730769169,"sku":"NLS9780367255169","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53108413890833,"sku":"NIN9780367255169","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0367255162.jpg?v=1751260071"},{"product_id":"self-declaration-in-the-legal-recognition-of-gender-book-chris-dietz-9781032364841","title":"Self-Declaration in the Legal Recognition of Gender","description":"Self-Declaration in the Legal Recognition of Gender examines the impact of legislation premised upon the principle of ‘self-declaration’ of legal gender status. Health, and more recently health law, has long been animated by discussions of particular bodies - whether they are disordered, diseased, or disabled - but each of these classificatory regimes claim some knowledge about the body. This edited collection aims to uncover and challenge the fundamental assumptions that underpin medico-legal knowledge claims about such bodies. This exploration is achieved through a mix of perspectives, but many contributors look towards embodiment as a perspective that understands bodies to be shaped by their institutional contexts. Much of this work alerts us to the idea that medical practitioners not only respond to healthcare issues, but also create them through their own understandings of 'normality' and 'fixing'. Bodies, as a result, cannot be understood outside of, or as separate to, their medical and legal contexts. This compelling book pushes the possibility of new directions in health care and health justice.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52613539397905,"sku":"NLS9783030422028","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030422028.jpg?v=1761518628"},{"product_id":"jurisprudence-of-the-body-book-chris-dietz-9783030421991","title":"A Jurisprudence of the Body","description":"This book brings together a range of theoretical perspectives to consider fundamental questions of health law and the place of the body within it.
