Variability in pathogenesis and complex pathophysiology often delay diagnosis and create significant challenges for clinical studies in this group of critically ill patients. Mainly for those reasons, there is no therapy approved so far to overcome the underlying immune dysregulation. This book provides an overview about the state of the art of sepsis diagnostics and potential future therapies. Chapter 1 focuses on the immunologic staging of sepsis--the key for successful treatment of the dysregulated hot response. Chapter 2 reveals similarities in the immune response in sepsis and cancer--opening new avenues for novel therapies. Chapter 3 introduces an important modulator of the immune response--the endogenous cannabinoid system and elucidates its role in organ dysfunction in sepsis. Facing the increasing bacterial resistance to classical antibiotics, Chapter 4 discusses two unique mechanisms to treat infection and inflammation in sepsis: iron chelation, and the sphingosine pathway. The authors, all experts in experimental and clinical sepsis research, seek to provide further understanding of the complexities of the immune response as the physiological basis for the development of new therapeutics in sepsis.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50395040776465,"sku":"CIN1615047565G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52480777814289,"sku":"NLS9781615047567","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53252275863825,"sku":"NIN9781615047567","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1615047565.jpg?v=1750863080"},{"product_id":"thoughts-on-grammaticalization-book-christian-lehmann-9783946234074","title":"Thoughts on grammaticalization","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51061766816017,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51061770125585,"sku":"NIN9783946234074","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3946234070.jpg?v=1751031993"},{"product_id":"ultimate-game-book-christian-lehmann-9781567922158","title":"Ultimate Game","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51088435642641,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51088438657297,"sku":"NIN9781567922158","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53370903789841,"sku":"CIN1567922155VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1567922155.jpg?v=1750762120"},{"product_id":"key-to-music-s-genetics-book-christian-lehmann-9781783080281","title":"The Key to Music's Genetics","description":"Christian Lehmann brings his experience as a musicologist, singer and academic to this fascinating journey through the origins of music and its role in human development, culture and society.    Few books on music are as rewarding as this one. Technical terms are clearly described in a way that appeals to both the musically well-informed and the musically inexperienced. Well-chosen examples and amusing asides help to make this a highly informative and extremely readable book – a must for anyone interested in the development of music and how integral it is to the human condition.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51120481960209,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51120484712721,"sku":"NIN9781783080281","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52132258677009,"sku":"NLS9781783080281","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1783080280.jpg?v=1750897471"},{"product_id":"typological-studies-in-participation-book-christian-lehmann-9783050037028","title":"Typological Studies in Participation","description":"Dieser Sammelband präsentiert Ergebnisse des DFG-Forschungsprojekts \"Lexikalische und grammatische Typologie des Yukatekischen Maya\" (Universitäten Bielefeld und Erfurt 1996-2002, Leitung Christian Lehmann). Die beiden enthaltenen Beiträge thematisieren die Codierung semantischer Relationen durch syntaktische Relationen und die grammatische Reflektion von Partizipantenkonstellationen in einer Situation (Partizipation). Die Analysen kombinieren den funktionalen und den strukturellen Ansatz. Christian Lehmann und Yong-Min Shin verfolgen die onomasiologische Perspektive und behandeln die Versprachlichung diverser instrumentaler und komitativer Relationen in den Sprachen Englisch, Deutsch, Hmong, Japanisch, Kambera, Kayardild, Khmer, Kolyma Yukagirisch, Koreanisch, Lezgisch, Mandarin Chinesisch, Thai, Türkisch, Vietnamesisch, Yidin und Yukatekisch. Sie entwickeln einen umfassenden Rahmen zur typologischen Untersuchung der funktionalen Domäne der Konkomitanz und unterscheiden zwischen spezifischeren Partizipantenrelationen wie Partner, Begleiter, Vehikel, Werkzeug, Material, Art und Weise und Umstand. Es wird gezeigt, dass Konkomitanten in ihrer syntaktischen Kodierung entsprechend diesen spezifischeren Funktionen sowie in Abhängigkeit von absoluten Eigenschaften wie z. B. Belebtheit variieren. Christian Lehmann and Elisabeth Verhoeven nehmen in ihrem Beitrag dagegen die semasiologische Perspektive ein und behandeln die syntaktische Kodierung peripherer Partizipanten in inkorporativen Strukturen. Sie kontrastieren Substantivinkorporation im Yukatekischen mit demselben Prozess in anderen Sprachen, in denen er gleichfalls der Veränderung der Partizipantenstruktur dient, nämlich im Nahuatl, Guaraní, Mayali und im Samoanischen. Dabei ergibt sich, dass im Yukatekischen Substantivinkorporation in einem größeren Maße zur Neuanordnung von Partizipanten genutzt wird als in anderen Sprachen. Weiterhin zeigt ein Vergleich mit anderen Mayasprachen, dass Inkorporation im Yukatekischen eine Besonderheit innerhalb dieser Sprachfamilie darstellt. Dies gilt sowohl in Bezug auf die Bedeutung von inkorporativen Verben als auch in Bezug auf die Funktionen, die dieser Prozess erfüllt.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51185759158545,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51185761845521,"sku":"NIN9783050037028","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52123325595921,"sku":"NLS9783050037028","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3050037024.jpg?v=1751158309"},{"product_id":"thoughts-on-grammaticalization-book-christian-lehmann-9783946234067","title":"Thoughts on grammaticalization","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52332489376017,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52332489867537,"sku":"NLS9783946234067","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783946234067.jpg?v=1758151812"},{"product_id":"charakterisierung-des-bakterienisolates-c1-aus-cystodytes-dellechiajei-book-christian-lehmann-9783838679464","title":"Charakterisierung des Bakterienisolates C1 aus Cystodytes dellechiajei","description":"Inhaltsangabe: Zusammenfassung: In dieser Arbeit wurde der aus der marinen Ascidie Cystodytes dellechiajei isolierte Mikroorganismus C1 hinsichtlich Morphologie, Stoffwechsel und Produktion biologisch aktiver Substanzen (Antibiotika, Autoinduktoren), sowie seiner symbiotischen Beziehung zu C. dellechiajei naher charakterisiert. Hierbei sind vor allem eine groe Variabilitat in der Zellmorphologie (Kokken; lange, schlanke Stabchen; verzweigte und vibroide Zellen) und die Fahigkeit, verschiedene Polymere als einzige Kohlenstoffquellen zu nutzen, hervorzuheben. Des Weiteren wurde durch 16S rDNA und gyrB-Sequenzanalysen eine phylogenetische Einordnung vorgenommen und mit Hilfe des ARB Software-Pakets (Ludwig und Strunk, 2002) ein Stammbaum erstellt. So konnte C1 zweifelsfrei dem Genus Microbulbifer (Gonzalez et al., 1997) zugeordnet werden. Untersuchungen, die darauf abzielten, eine spezifische Assoziation des Bakteriums mit der Ascidie nachzuweisen, wurden erfolgreich mittels Fluoreszenz-In-Situ-Hybridisierungen (FISH) durchgefuhrt. Wahrend C1 aus C. dellechiajei beliebig oft reisoliert werden konnte, lie sich der Mikroorganismus im umgebenden Meerwasser nicht nachweisen. Abgesehen davon stellt C1 den Experimenten zufolge den Groteil der mikrobiellen Gesamtpopulation innerhalb des Ascidien-Gewebes. Mit marinen Makroorganismen vergesellschaftete Prokaryoten wurden oftmals als Produzenten biologisch aktiver Metabolite identifiziert, womit sich sessile Meeresbewohner beispielsweise gegen Fressfeinde oder Besiedelung durch Epibionten erwehren. Der biotechnologische und bio-medizinische Nutzen solcher nicht selten chemisch unbekannter Substanzen fur den Menschen liegt auf der Hand. So wird weltweit an der Entwicklung von Antibiotika mit vollig neuartigen Leitstrukturen gearbeitet und es befinden sich eine Reihe vielversprechender Medikamente im Bereich der Onkologie in klinischen Testphasen, um nur zwei Beispiele zu nennen. By treating his novels as collaborations with illustrators, particularly Phiz, it explores how Dickens drew on Ancient Greek and Roman myths, history and art to engage with 19th-century debates. Through detailed analysis of both text and illustrations, the book reveals the complexity of Dickens’s Classical references and their significance in shaping broader cultural conversations.   Each chapter pairs novels such as David Copperfield, Bleak House and A Tale of Two Cities with Dickens’s journalism, letters and short fiction, supported by analysis of a range of illustrations. Christian Lehmann challenges the notion that Victorian Classics were the preserve of an elite, showing instead how Dickens adapted a demotic Classicism rooted in burlesque, satire, architecture and popular culture. He argues that Dickens’s Classical allusions, often dismissed as superficial, form an integral part of his literary output. These references are examined alongside historical developments in the ideology of scientific racism, evolving views on sexual violence, and critiques of imperialism, demonstrating how Dickens reshaped Classical traditions to reflect and critique the cultural and political dynamics of his era.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52929854243089,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52929854275857,"sku":"NGR9781350548442","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781350548442.jpg?v=1767097014"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-christian-lehmann.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
