It covers recent interdisciplinary debates on the nature of emotions as well as standard theories of emotions, such as feeling theories, motivational theories, and evaluative theories. The book includes discussions of the alleged irrationality of emotions, and looks into the question of whether emotions could not, in some cases, contribute positively to theoretical and practical rationality. In addition, the role of emotions in the theory of virtues and the theory of values receives a detailed treatment. Finally, the book turns to the question of how we can regulate and even educate our emotions by engaging with music and with narrative art.  The overall picture of emotions that emerges is one that does justice to the central role that emotions play in our lives, conceiving of emotions as crucial to our grasp of values. As an opinionated introduction, the book doesn’t pretend to be neutral but aims to engage readers in contemporary debates. Each chapter closes with questions for further discussion and suggestions for further reading. This volume brings together fourteen chapters on negative emotions, written in a highly accessible style for non-specialists and specialists alike. It starts with chapters on general issues raised by negative emotions, such as the nature of valence, the theoretical implications of nasty emotions, the role of negative emotions in fiction, as well as the puzzles raised by ambivalent and mixed emotions. The second part of the volume consists of studies of specific emotional phenomena, ranging from the emotion of being moved and the sense of uncanniness to jealousy, hatred, shame, contempt, anxiety, and grief.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50371618308369,"sku":"CIN1138689696VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53688580374801,"sku":"NLS9781138689695","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1138689696.jpg?v=1781865568"},{"product_id":"philosophy-of-emotion-book-christine-tappolet-9781138687431","title":"Philosophy of Emotion","description":"In this book, Christine Tappolet offers readers a thorough, wide-ranging, and highly accessible introduction to the philosophy of emotions. To achieve this, we must understand which things are good for us and which things are bad for us - in other words, we must understand what well-being and ill-being consist in. While well-being has been the subject of significant philosophical inquiry, ill-being has received far less attention. The handful of philosophers who have considered ill-being have challenged the common belief that ill-being is the symmetrical counterpart of well-being and argued that deriving accounts of ill-being from existing theories of well-being is more complex than it appears.   The present collection of fifteen original essays offers an in-depth exploration of the philosophical issues surrounding ill-being. Issues covered include the role of ill-being in everyday practice, the aggregation of goods and bads, degrees of well- and ill-being, how existing theories of well-being can account for ill-being, the role of adaptive preferences in ill-being, and how to understand the badness of pain. By examining the relation of ill-being to a variety of connected phenomena, such as unhappiness, negative emotions and affects, pain, disability, disease, and failure, the essays will illuminate the important notions of ill-being and well-being. Given the broad relevance of these issues, this collection will be indispensable not only to philosophers but also to scholars and graduate students in fields such as psychology, sociology, and economics.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51631937749265,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51631937978641,"sku":"NGR9780192865410","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52495836512529,"sku":"NIN9780192865410","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0192865412.jpg?v=1772272810"},{"product_id":"emotions-values-and-agency-book-christine-tappolet-9780199696512","title":"Emotions, Values, and Agency","description":"The emotions we experience are crucial to who we are, to what we think, and to what we do. But what are emotions, exactly, and how do they relate to agency? The aim of this book is to spell out an account of emotions, which is grounded on analogies between emotions and sensory experiences, and to explore the implications of this account for our understanding of human agency. The central claim is that emotions consist in perceptual experiences of values, such as the fearsome, the disgusting or the admirable. A virtue of this account is that it affords a better grasp of a variety of interconnected phenomena, such as motivation, values, responsibility and reason-responsiveness. In the process of exploring the implications of the Perceptual Theory of emotions, several claims are proposed. First, emotions normally involve desires that set goals, but they can be contemplative in that they can occur without any motivation. Second, evaluative judgements can be understood in terms of appropriate emotions in so far as appropriateness is taken to consist in correct representation. Third, by contrast with what Strawsonian theories hold, the concept of moral responsibility is not response-dependent, but the relationship between emotions and moral responsibility is mediated by values. Finally, in so far as emotions are perceptions of values, they can be considered to be perceptions of practical reasons, so that on certain conditions, acting on the basis of one's emotions can consist in responding to one's reasons.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52331175018769,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52331175739665,"sku":"NLS9780199696512","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780199696512.jpg?v=1758147565"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-christine-tappolet.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
