He worked every day from the 1930s until 1985 aged eighty-four. Unknowingly, he became the unofficial family photographer of a city, having taken a estimated 182,500 photos of passers-by. When cameras were not within reach of normal people, Arthur provided a vital service taking photos of couples on first dates, people up in Dublin for a day, happy parents with newborn children, match-goers, and many more. These cherished photos form the basis of this collection. Each photo was submitted by its owner with a story and caption explaining the background. The photos bear witness to a changing cityscape, fashion, lifestyle, social habits and even camera technology. In terms of subjects, Arthur didn't just photograph everyday people but also famous celebrities, African princes, street characters and even future stars, such as a seven-year-old George Harrison, with his mother. The result is a window to an era when times were so different and photographs were taken to be cherished.This is a uniquely crowd-sourced publication, the culmination of the Man on Bridge project, a national photo collection campaign.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49543249527057,"sku":"GOR008155520","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50669454229777,"sku":"GOR013453959","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1848892454.jpg?v=1750803268"},{"product_id":"national-treasures-book-ciaran-deeney-9781527228443","title":"National Treasures","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49631661588753,"sku":"GOR009751104","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50514608455953,"sku":"GOR013981002","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1527228444.jpg?v=1750990858"},{"product_id":"man-on-the-bridge-book-ciaran-deeney-9781848893320","title":"Man on the Bridge","description":"Born Abraham Feldman in 1901, Arthur Fields was from a Ukrainian Jewish family who fled anti-Semitism. From the 1930s to the 1980s, he stood on Dublin's O'Connell Bridge taking photographs of the city that passed before him in dapper suits, mini-skirts, mohawks and mullets: meeting first loves, proudly showing off firstborns, laughing with friends. In the background, O'Connell Street and the world changed. Nelson's Pillar disappeared; the golden arches of McDonalds materialised. Arthur captured a remarkable record of life over the course of half a century. Although he took thousands of photos, no negatives survive. Ciaran Deeney and David Clarke launched the Man on the Bridge project to crowd-source Arthur's photos and create an alternative photographic archive of Dublin city, culminating in an acclaimed book. Now, more of the cherished snapshots have been gathered from walls, drawers and wallets throughout the country, and are collected here with the names and stories behind them: a father's friend 'Flash' who lost a leg in the Spanish Civil War; the last known photo of a beloved mother, carrying the slippers she had just bought for her 'routine' operation. This second volume of Dublin's unofficial family photo album is a nostalgic and bittersweet ode to a changing city and the people who walk its streets.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50297714770193,"sku":"GOR009216491","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1848893329.jpg?v=1751027528"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-ciaran-deeney.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
