Indians were conscious that they were looked down on as barbarous 'coolies' by other sections of the population. In response, the intellectual elite constructed a view of India, drawn from the writings of Max Muller and Tagore, which provided the Indo-Guyanese community with a sustaining sense of self-esteem and the sources of its resistance to colonialism. Focusing on individuals such as Joseph and Peter Ruhomon, JA Luckhoo and WH Wharton, the study looks at the way the beginnings of the nationalist movement in India stimulated such individuals to start defining the nature of their presence in the New World. Seecharan argues that while the vision of 'Mother India' stimulated the community's cultural revival, it constrained the way it thought about Guyana. \"Dr. Seecharan's research is meticulous and his analysis penetrating. This is why, despite its specific Indian focus and slender look, India offers much insight into the broader history of Guyanese society as a whole.\" Frank Birbalsingh Clem Seecharan was born in Guyana. He currently teaches on the Caribbean Studies programme at the University of North London.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49617371398417,"sku":"GOR013732553","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50374305186065,"sku":"CIN0948833610G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0948833610.jpg?v=1750851459"},{"product_id":"joe-solomon-and-the-spirit-of-port-mourant-book-clem-seecharan-9781912662821","title":"Joe Solomon and the Spirit of Port Mourant","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49966982070545,"sku":"GOR012833409","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1912662825.jpg?v=1750900262"},{"product_id":"sweetening-bitter-sugar-book-clem-seecharan-9789766371937","title":"Sweetening Bitter Sugar","description":"This book is about Jock Campbell’s role in the shaping of British Guiana (Guyana) towards the end of Empire. Campbell, the head of the Booker Company which owned most of the sugar plantations in colonial Guyana was a reformer whose Fabian social beliefs drove him to secure major benifits for sugar workers in teh 1950s and 1960s. Clem Seecharan explores the fascinating interplay between Campbell’s programme of reforms and the doctrinaire Marxism of Guyana’s charismatic politician, Cheddi Jagan. Fed by his notion of `bitter sugar’ and an unrelenting hostility to Booker, Jagan exploited the loyalty of Indian sugar workers to foment instability on the plantations and thus undermined Campbell’s mission to alleviate the colony’s bitter plantation legacy. Seecharan provides a rigorous analysis of Campbell – a complex, progressive contradictory and passionate man – and his work in turbulent British Guiana, marked by nationalist stirrings, mobilisation doe decolonisation, the fragmenting of Jagan’s nationalist coalition and descent into racial hatred and violence.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49999590392081,"sku":"GOR001911751","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50340283351313,"sku":"GOR013934207","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50398988501265,"sku":"CIN9766371938G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51066874298641,"sku":"NIN9789766371937","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52139342233873,"sku":"NLS9789766371937","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9766371938.jpg?v=1750733059"},{"product_id":"finding-myself-essays-in-race-politics-and-culture-book-clem-seecharan-9781845232474","title":"Finding Myself: Essays in Race Politics and Culture","description":"These essays cut to the heart of contemporary racial politics starting in the Caribbean and extending outwards.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50735413952785,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50735414116625,"sku":"GOR010698319","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/184523247X.jpg?v=1751027621"},{"product_id":"hand-in-hand-history-of-cricket-in-guyana-1898-1914-book-clem-seecharan-9781910553954","title":"Hand-in-Hand History of Cricket in Guyana 1898-1914","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50880244285713,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50880244351249,"sku":"GOR009926264","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1910553956.jpg?v=1750803860"},{"product_id":"cheddi-jagan-and-the-cold-war-1946-1992-book-clem-seecharan-9789768286611","title":"Cheddi Jagan and The Cold War 1946-1992","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51066458964241,"sku":"NIN9789768286611","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51708553593105,"sku":"GOR014372140","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52139357896977,"sku":"NLS9789768286611","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/976828661X.jpg?v=1750808178"},{"product_id":"muscular-learning-book-clem-seecharan-9789766372309","title":"Muscular Learning","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51574572679441,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51574572843281,"sku":"GOR014333407","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9766372306.jpg?v=1750775975"},{"product_id":"joseph-ruhomon-s-india-book-clem-seecharan-9789766400958","title":"Joseph Ruhomon's India","description":"This reissue of an 1894 pamphlet celebrates Joseph Ruhomon as the first Indian intellectual in British Guiana, now Guyana.
