While the series addresses the contributions of scholars in our understanding of financial decisions and markets, this seventh book describes how econometrics developed and how its underlying assumptions created the underpinning of much of modern financial theory. The author shows that the theorists of econometrics were a mix of mathematicians and cosmologists, entrepreneurs, economists and financial scholars. The author demonstrates that by laying down the foundation of empirical analysis, they also forever determined the way in which we think about financial returns and the vocabulary we employ to describe them. Through this volume, the reader can discover the life stories, inspirations, and theories of Carl Friedrich Gauss, Francis Galton, Karl Pearson, Ronald Aylmer Fisher, Harold Hotelling, Alfred Cowles III, Ragnar Frisch, and Trygve Haavelmo, specifically. We learn how each theorist made an intellectual leap simply by thinking about a conventional problem in an unconventional way.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49732628447505,"sku":"NGR9781137341365","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52150964322577,"sku":"NLS9781137341365","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/113734136X.jpg?v=1750791583"},{"product_id":"efficient-market-hypothesists-book-colin-read-9780230274211","title":"The Efficient Market Hypothesists","description":"Describes the lives, theories, and legacies of six great minds in finance who changed the way we look at financial markets and equilibrium. There is no intergenerational issue that is more pressing than the challenge of sustainability and climate change. It is a concern that will only worsen within any reader’s lifetime, especially if we fail to act. At the same time, there is growing concern among corporations arising from the Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) paradigm that includes climate risk, future profits, and stakeholder expectations. Many of our leading institutions also increasingly acknowledge a responsibility for corporate decisions since the onset of the Industrial Revolution that plays no small role in bringing us to the existential precipice of our day. This book  provides necessary tools of sufficient sophistication to address complex intergenerational issues, such as global warming, economic justice and fairness, appropriate intergenerational planning, sustainable finance, corporate risk management, and governance.          The book offers a vital resource for students, shareholders, sustainability practitioners, agencies, and advocates interested in climate action, intergenerational accountability, and economic sustainability.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51061167030545,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51061169717521,"sku":"NIN9783031344824","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52427892785425,"sku":"NLS9783031344824","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3031344820.jpg?v=1751030790"},{"product_id":"rising-in-western-upper-canada-1837-8-book-colin-read-9780802064950","title":"The Rising in Western Upper Canada 1837-8","description":"In December 1837 assemblyman Dr Charles Duncombe of Burford led a rebellion in south-western Upper Canada, gathering 500 men near Brantford. Historians have assumed that Duncombe acted in concert with William Lyon Mackenzie, leader of the revolt near Toronto. Professor Read finds this supposition wrong, though acknowledging that Duncombe was induced to promote rebellion by the erroneous report that Mackenzie and his men had taken Toronto. To better define the events of the period, Read examines the states of society in the western ear of the Gore district and much of the London district, including settlement and the national and religious backgrounds of the inhabitants, and the types of society and economy they evolved. He looks at their political culture and its development, clearly indicating the battle lines drawn between Reformers and Tories in the pre-rebellion period – lines which grew increasingly rigid as the rebellion neared, hardened by a number of issues, some provincial in nature, others purely local. Read describes the mustering of the rebels, the crushing of the rebellion by ‘loyalist ‘forces, and the subsequent detention and imprisonment of the rebels, assessing the role of the authorities in their punishment and defining its nature. The author concludes that the rebels were mostly American or Upper Canadian and broadly representative of the members of a reasonably prosperous agrarian community, not of a rural proletariat, nascent or otherwise. He suggests that the Duncombe rising and its attendant troubles were precipitated, not by a broadly based movement aimed at producing fundamental social change, but by a narrowly centred movement which sought political reforms.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51292989653265,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51292991947025,"sku":"NIN9780802064950","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51803236139281,"sku":"NGR9780802064950","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52591505801489,"sku":"NLS9780802064950","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0802064957.jpg?v=1761388511"},{"product_id":"loyalist-land-ownership-in-upper-canada-s-norfolk-county-17921851-book-colin-read-9780228026112","title":"Loyalist Land Ownership in Upper Canada's Norfolk County, 1792–1851","description":"After the American Revolution, many Loyalists moved north, where the British colonial government awarded them generous land grants on favourable terms. The intention behind these grants was to create a landed gentry in Upper Canada that would safeguard the colony's political security and build social cohesion among its leadership. Loyalist Land Ownership in Upper Canada's Norfolk County, 1792–1851 examines the long-term landholding of Loyalists and other settlers who arrived in the county before 1812 to judge whether this social experiment succeeded. Colin Read explores the various ways that settlers acquired and transmitted land, the nature of familial land sales, and the place of women in owning land. Consulting land records and genealogical research, he finds that no landed elite endured in Upper Canada: Loyalists owned only marginally more land than non-Loyalists by 1851, and it was commonplace for latecoming settlers to eventually own land. Yet early arrival was a significant determinant of later landholding and property size – it mattered who settled first. Land was the main source of wealth in early Canada. This fine-grained study sheds light on how it was acquired, disposed of, and passed down through generations in the nineteenth century. Although a landed aristocracy was never realized, the colonial state's allocation of land to settlers laid the foundation for their social standing.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51595661345041,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51595661476113,"sku":"NGR9780228026112","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53507570532625,"sku":"NIN9780228026112","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0228026113.jpg?v=1764410515"},{"product_id":"rebellion-of-1837-in-upper-canada-book-colin-read-9780886290269","title":"The Rebellion of 1837 in Upper Canada","description":"\u003cdiv\u003eThis volume presents a broad documentary coverage of the rebellions and material on areas of Upper Canada not directly threatened by them.
