Whilst open conflict was avoided between the ideologically competing superpowers and their principal allies, millions died in battlegrounds in parts of the world that were usually far from Moscow, Washington and London.  The threat of nuclear annihilation was omnipresent, but at the same time mutually assured destruction tempered conflict and focused minds. Subtle (and not so subtle) attempts to influence popular opinion either way were apparent in everyday life on both sides of the divide. Whilst the power of the dollar and the burgeoning costs of the arms race eventually broke the Soviet economy, the idea that capitalism  won' the the Cold War seems misplaced, especially if one considers events that have happened since, including very recent armed conflict.  The book takes the reader through main events of the period, but focuses on the impact on ordinary citizens East and West and the view of events from their perspective. This is a story of how economies on both sides were built around war preparations and the advance of destructive technologies that had no social benefits apart from the provision of employment. Sources used are unusual in not fitting the western-based narratives that pervade both academic histories and popular accounts.  However, this book is not an apology for the more oppressive aspects of Soviet policy as the USSR struggled to build  really existing socialism' within its own borders and the Eastern Bloc countries under its immediate influence. Instead, it brings a people's perspective from both sides onto this important period of recent history, whose consequences are very much still with us as we face modern challenges around climate change and growing inequality across our world. A People's History of the Cold War - Stories from East and West captures the mood of the times with its extensive contemporary illustrations.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49601713209617,"sku":"GOR013478860","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49747623051537,"sku":"NGR9781399087520","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1399087525.jpg?v=1751018972"},{"product_id":"doing-radical-social-work-book-colin-turbett-9781137308535","title":"Doing Radical Social Work","description":"This is the first book to provide social workers with an applicable model for radical practice. What are the opportunities in a landscape dominated by shrinking budgets with their attendant procedural and risk-obsessed assessment and care management models?    In this accessibly written book, Colin Turbett explores the erratic history of community social work. He goes on to demonstrate through contemporary examples how this preventative and relationship-based model can work for the individuals and communities served, and also provide an answer to the recruitment and retention issues adversely affecting mainstream settings.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50243173482769,"sku":"NGR9781447370994","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51026539741457,"sku":"NIN9781447370994","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1447370996.jpg?v=1750826497"},{"product_id":"motorcycles-motorcycling-in-the-ussr-from-1939-book-colin-turbett-9781787113145","title":"Motorcycles \u0026 Motorcycling in the USSR from 1939","description":"This book provides the first accessible English language account of motorcycles in the Soviet Union. Concentrating on the wartime and postwar period until 1990, prior to the dissolution of the USSR in 1991, it covers the motorcycles produced, and looks at the way in which they were used at home and exported abroad.  Chapters cover wartime, models produced, the social character of Soviet era motorcycling, and wide-ranging sport. With planned, rather than market-led, production based around copies of pre-war German BMW and DKW models, the industry churned out hundreds of thousands of utilitarian and rugged machines that were very different from the more fashion-orientated machines produced in the West. These motorcycles went under the place names of the producing factories: Ishevsk, Kovrov, Moskva, Minsk and, of course, the large flat twins produced in Irbit and Kiev under the Ural and Dnepr names.  With a strong emphasis on Soviet era illustrations, the book provides an insight into a life based on idealism and ideology that has now passed. Period photographs and images, many of them from private family collections, show Soviet bikes as well as popular imports Jawa from Czechoslovakia, and Pannonia from Hungary.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50322629034257,"sku":"GOR012668552","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51070579540241,"sku":"NGR9781787113145","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1787113140.jpg?v=1751442865"},{"product_id":"rural-social-work-practice-in-scotland-book-colin-turbett-9781861780836","title":"Rural Social Work Practice in Scotland","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50747924578577,"sku":"GOR009558031","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1861780834.jpg?v=1750931408"},{"product_id":"red-star-at-war-book-colin-turbett-9781526763280","title":"Red Star at War","description":"Russia's losses during the Second World War were beyond imagination and touched the lives of an entire population caught between a brutal and murderous invader and a ruthless leadership at home. Soviet victory over the Nazis, which effectively won the war, was the end result of effort and sacrifice by the ordinary millions who were totally committed to saving their  motherland'.  The humanity of the ordinary Soviet citizen in uniform is often forgotten because of later Cold War narratives propagated East and West for differing ideological reasons. This book seeks to redress these imbalances. In its pages the tragedy of war and loss are captured in the faces of those who lived through some of the most momentous years in human history. Many of the pictures show the women who fought alongside men in the front line - a unique feature among the belligerent nations.  _Red Star at War_ is centered on photographs taken before, during and after the Second World War, which illustrate the human face of the immense Soviet war effort. These show soldiers, sailors, airmen (men and women) not in battle, but in photographs taken for their families and friends, and the messages that often went with these images. A number were taken in the knowledge that they might be the last image of a loved one as death was almost a certainty for many. The photographs and captions are backed up by text that provides both context and baseline - drawn from writings of the period as well as more recent historical accounts and research.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51182722580753,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51182722810129,"sku":"GOR011953785","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1526763281.jpg?v=1751422993"},{"product_id":"rural-social-work-in-the-uk-book-colin-turbett-9783031524424","title":"Rural Social Work in the UK","description":"This book draws together writers from various backgrounds to discuss issues that affect those working in rural social work settings, on themes ranging from current issues that are common to rural localities (including those arising from the Covid-19 pandemic) to future challenges. Common themes that run through all the chapters and hold them together include community and place, stigma and alienation, inequality and social justice, and the environment. Focused on the arrival of the iconic “Blue Trains” in 1960, the book explores how railway modernisation and electrification reflected wider shifts in Scottish society during the post-war era.    Blending transport history with social commentary, this study traces the decline of steam railways and the rise of a modern, connected rail network serving Glasgow and surrounding Clyde communities. It situates these changes within the context of post-war reconstruction, the expansion of the welfare state, large-scale housing redevelopment, and evolving patterns of work, travel and urban life in Scotland.    Drawing on historical documents, maps, photographs and railway promotional material, Dreams in Blue provides both technical insight and a vivid portrait of everyday life during a period of rapid industrial change. It reveals how the Blue Trains became a symbol of progress, modernity, and optimism for post-war Britain.    Ideal for readers interested in Glasgow social history, Scottish transport heritage, and railway modernisation, this book offers a nostalgic yet thought-provoking exploration of how railways shaped communities. Dreams in Blue also reflects on infrastructure, regional development, and the meaning of progress in post-war Britain.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53619284934929,"sku":"NGR9781849957335","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}]}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-colin-turbett.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
