While much of the story centres on the often brittle relationship with the English Plantagenets, Scotland emerges as a European power, respected not least for its now largely forgotten cultural flowering. This is demonstrated in the later chapters by an examination of a body of hiterto undervalued texts, notably a skit on the Grail legend. Set in Scotland, the romance was probably composed by a St Andrews' bishop for the court circle, and can claim to be the country's earliest surviving vernacular work. This interdisciplinary approach, by juxtaposing established facts with literary interpretations, offers historians and the general reader with a new and more rounded view of both the domestic conditions and the reputation abroad of William the Lion's Scotland. D.D.R. Owen is the author of \"Eleanor of Aquitaine: Queen and Legend\".","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49596024127761,"sku":"GOR002037598","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52940776112401,"sku":"CIN1862320101VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1862320101.jpg?v=1751379907"},{"product_id":"song-of-roland-book-ddr-owen-9780851155371","title":"The Song of Roland","description":"On 15 August 778, Charlemagne and his army were crossing the Pyrenees back into France, after a campaign in which they had taken Saragossa and Pamplona. His rearguard, among whose commanders was Roland, duke of the Marches of Brittany, was surprised by a party of Basques, and destroyed. The chronicles of the time duly noted the event.From this tiny piece of historical grit there grew a pearl of medieval literature, The Song of Roland. The story of Roland disappears from history in the ninth century to reappear as an epic poem two hundred years later, transformed into a tale of courage, loyalty and treachery. Charlemagne becomes a god-like figure, while Roland acquires a companion, Oliver, who is almost his equal in prowess. The attack on Roland and his companions is no longer a local ambush, but the result of a conspiracy between a Saracen king in Spain and Roland's stepfather Count Ganelon. The plothas become a classic tale of jealousy and intrigue, and the poet tells it in masterly fashion; he is equally skilled at setting a scene, conveying the mood of his actors, or evoking the drama of the battle.The present translationby D.D.R. Owen is recognised as one of the best modern English versions of the poem: it has been revised for this new illustrated edition, which uses the vivid images of a late medieval manuscript of the legend. The introductionsets the poem in its context and shows how this work has influenced not only later literature, but even our view of history and notably of the Norman Conquest.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49657837551889,"sku":"GOR005845961","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49853299491089,"sku":"GOR002111068","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0851155375.jpg?v=1751297422"},{"product_id":"eleanor-of-aquitaine-book-ddr-owen-9780631170723","title":"Eleanor of Aquitaine","description":"This fascinating new biography tells the story of one of the most influential figures of the twelfth century, Eleanor of Aquitaine, successively queen of France and of England. First married to the future French King Louis VII, she later married Henry, Count of Anjou and Duke of Normandy. After invading England in 1154, and following the death of Stephen, he became King as Henry II, Eleanor was Queen of an empire stretching from the Scottish borders to the Pyrenees. Of Eleanor's eight children, two were future kings of England: Richard the Lionheart and John. Her behaviour and political motives have always been open to question, and the intrigues of herself and her children against Henry are notorious. Supported by Eleanor (believed by many to be the prime mover in the affair), the three eldest sons soon openly rebelled against their father. The rebellion collapsed and as a result Eleanor was imprisoned for sixteen years. Nevertheless, after Henry's death, her efforts successfully assured Richard's accession, and later John's own. Professor Owen's portrait separates the true historical Eleanor from the legend. In tracing her life he reassesses her political importance in the reigns of Henry, Richard and John, her role as a literary and cultural patron and her influence in the twelfth-century renaissance. Even in her own day, she caught the imagination of commentators, and the final parts of Professor Owen's biography examine the legend that built up around her life and in twelfth-century epic and romance.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49713843732753,"sku":"GOR002487090","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49769017082129,"sku":"GOR001740509","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53065892200721,"sku":"CIN0631170723VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53103679176977,"sku":"GOR010817354","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53568036077841,"sku":"CIN0631170723G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0631170723.jpg?v=1751360467"},{"product_id":"the-vision-of-hell-infernal-journeys-in-medieval-french-literature-book-owen-d-d-r-9780701116774","title":"The vision of Hell: infernal journeys in medieval French literature","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53257457467665,"sku":"GOR014837633","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780701116774.jpg?v=1773688531"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-d-d-r-owen.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
