The photos cover a wide variety of trains in the mainland states, from Queensland to the Pilbara region of Western Australia, and include pictures showing trains in the landscapes, as well as close-up photos of locomotives for the modelling enthusiasts. Their versatility in being able to work off 3rd rail electricity as well as diesel engined power gave them unrivalled areas of work.  The class 74s, which only had a short life, were seen particularly on boat trains and parcels services on the South Western main line.  The classes 201-3 were 6-car units of narrow bodied construction, so as to be able to work Hastings line services with its restricted clearances.  The other classes 204-207 were 3-car units employed on stopping services throughout the region, but especially in Hampshire and the lines to Uckfield and originally East Grinstead. Compiled by a well-regarded author of several successfully published books showing many varying classes of trains throughout the world, this book covers the period from 1986 to the present day. It brilliantly illustrates the various classes and the huge myriad of colour schemes that have been used throughout the years, from the great days of the British Rail to the era of Privatisation. The contrast between the cash-strapped British Rail from an almost universal blue and grey colour scheme, to the well-funded privatised multi-coloured system seen today, is well portrayed in this comprehensive album, in which more than one photo of a class is shown. This selection of photographs have been specifically chosen to demonstrate an undeniably wide range of locations from Fort William in Scotland to St Austell in Cornwall, and, of course, in a variety of British weather conditions. The emphasis is, therefore, on the beauty of the train in its surroundings.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49567361270033,"sku":"GOR008682451","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51597963231505,"sku":"GOR014342139","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52313159434513,"sku":"GOR009789736","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1473849136.jpg?v=1750715274"},{"product_id":"railfreight-in-colour-for-the-modeller-and-historian-book-david-cable-9780711033641","title":"Railfreight in Colour For the Modeller and Historian","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49570058961169,"sku":"GOR005158461","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49796418863377,"sku":"GOR008112456","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53396561690897,"sku":"CIN0711033641G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53396561887505,"sku":"CIN0711033641VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0711033641.jpg?v=1751327939"},{"product_id":"type-5-heavy-freight-locomotives-book-david-cable-9781473899728","title":"Type 5 Heavy Freight Locomotives","description":"This photographic album portrays the four classes of locomotives introduced to operate on the British Railways system, prior to Privatisation in 1994.  Increasing loads and deteriorating reliability of older classes necessitated the design of new, higher horsepower classes of diesel locomotives to operate the increasing requirement to operate trains handling loads in bulk, such as coal, minerals, fuels etc.  The four classes included one American design the class 59 which set new standards in haulage capacity and reliability. The other three designs classes 56, 58 and 60 were more suitable to their tasks than previous models, but in the case of the class 56, suffered a poor repuatation for availability for several years, although the few remaining members of the class have now attained acceptable standards.  Of the four classes, a small number of class 56s operate in private ownership, all the class 58s have been withdrawn, but all the class 59s and 60s are in daily use throughout England and Wales. Development took place in stages culminating in fully electrified lines from London to Scotland on both East and West Coast lines, and from London to Norwich. The introduction of these lines required the construction of new motive power.  Initially five types were produced for the WCML, from which the second phase of loco design was developed, giving a higher level of reliability, as well as power output. These newer designs were applied to the Anglian services, but the ECML plans required an updated design, ostensibly for mixed traffic, but hardly ever used on anything other than express passenger services, for which their 140mph potential enabled a major recast of the timetable. The opening of the Channel Tunnel required a mixed traffic dual voltage locomotive, running on both 25kv and the Southern Region 750v third rail DC.  The locomotives are classified between 81 and 92 inclusive, and this book of photographs by David Cable covers all the classes in a variety of locations and duties.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50154475946257,"sku":"GOR009966078","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1473896371.jpg?v=1750955619"},{"product_id":"rails-across-canada-book-david-cable-9781473838062","title":"Rails Across Canada","description":"The railways of Canada, like the network in the U S A, have a fascination to many people, both in North America and those who live elsewhere. Highly regarded author David Cable provides detailed, informative captions to illuminate the photographic content.The blue era can be said to have commenced with the unveiling in 1964 of the experimental 'XP64' train. The colour of the livery was slightly lighter than the shade eventually chosen for the full corporate image, introduced in 1965, when the system was re-branded as British Rail.There were, of course, many variations, particularly on locomotives. Some had large logos with small numbers or vice versa, Stratford depot pioneered silver roofs with the basic scheme on some Class 31s and 47s, plus the odd DMU cab, and there were specific variations such as the union jack flags applied to two Class 47s for the Queen's Silver Jubilee. Almost every class on the system carried the corporate colours, although some had only one or two representatives. At the outset of the blue era the number of classes that could be seen was extensive, even ignoring instances where types were reclassified because of re-engineering or re-gearing. There was a dramatic loss of locomotive classes between 1966 and 2013. We now have much less variety but much more colour.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51627614896401,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51627615224081,"sku":"NGR9781445699981","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1445699982.jpg?v=1751241666"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-david-cable.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
