Up to the early 1960s it was dominated by vessels of well-established companies usually following regular routes at predictable intervals. The sixties, however, marked the start of the container 'revolution' and, with it, the redundancy of fleets of relatively modern, fast, cargo liners. The 'box ship' also precipitated the closure of many cramped city docks throughout the world. Change continues and, with the exception of bulk cargo carriers and tankers, versatile vessels that can accommodate cars, containers and general cargo are now commonplace. Merchant Shipping: 50 Years in Photographs is a collection of David Hucknall's superb black-and-white photographs, taken over a lifetime as a shipping enthusiast, and supported by well-researched captions. Including vessels from some of the foremost shipping companies and depicting a wide range of ships and ports across the UK and Europe - and also in locations as far apart as West Africa and Japan - it will fascinate and delight ship-lovers wherever they are.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49548136710417,"sku":"GOR004659169","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50275025289489,"sku":"GOR007962696","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0752456237.jpg?v=1750701736"},{"product_id":"more-engine-sheds-in-camera-book-david-hucknall-9780750945851","title":"More Engine Sheds in Camera","description":"Continues from Engine Sheds in Camera (2005), which presented a record of engine sheds and motive power depots in Britain in the 1950s and '60s. Portraits of engine crews and shed workers, together with the images of the buildings and the locomotives on shed and at work, make up this evocative collection. The high quality black-and-white images, supported by well-researched and informative captions, are mainly from the author's collection and most have never been published previously. This album will bring back many memories to the thousands of enthusiasts who were, in their youth, drawn irresistibly to sheds throughout Britain to collect engine numbers and for the sight of some rare or possibly not-previously-seen locomotive. For those who are too young to remember the heyday of the steam locomotive, the book will be a glimpse of this essential and fascinating aspect of our industrial past.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49558794338577,"sku":"GOR004578265","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49601429340433,"sku":"GOR008402523","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51347128910097,"sku":"GOR008722973","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/075094191X.jpg?v=1750881449"},{"product_id":"changing-scene-of-merchant-shipping-book-david-hucknall-9780752493398","title":"The Changing Scene of Merchant Shipping","description":"The shipping industry is one of constant, dramatic change. Driven by a multitude of factors, including globalisation, technological advances, the demand for higher efficiency and ever-larger boats, mergers and acquisitions have taken place to change the playing field of the industry immensely. Here David Hucknall delves into his stunning collection of unique photographs to highlight the changing scene of the merchant shipping industry since the late 1990s, documenting its fast-paced development. Taken primarily in the UK, but also in important ports such as Hamburg and Vancouver, all are complemented by diligently researched and informative captions, making this volume a must-read for all modern shipping enthusiasts.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49604642111761,"sku":"GOR008161772","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0752493396.jpg?v=1750784621"},{"product_id":"british-diesel-locomotives-book-david-hucknall-9780752476506","title":"British Diesel Locomotives","description":"The rapid dieselisation of Britain’s railways meant that many designs of locomotives were introduced from various manufacturers. A vast chemical industry exists based on feedstocks produced by the controlled pyrolysis of hydrocarbons, while uncontrolled combustion in air is still among the most important sources of heat and mechanical energy. The detonation and explosion of hydrocarbon-oxidant mixtures can however, be a highly dangerous phenomenon which destroys lives and equipment. In order that control can be exerted over combustion processes, a complete description of hydrocarbon oxidation and pyrolysis is required. A major contribution to this is an understanding of the unstable intermediates involved and their reactions. The aim of this book is to review our knowledge of the chemistry of hydrocarbon combustion and to consider the data which are available for relevant reactions. Chapter 1 describes early studies in which the apparent complexity of the chemistry was established and the type of information required for a better understanding was defined. Experimental studies of the overall process which were carried out with the aim of establishing the sequence of stable chemical intermediates and some of the unstable species are described in Chapter 2. The limited nature of the information thus obtained showed that independent studies of individual reactions involving the unstable species were required. In Chapter 3 investigations specifically aimed at the determination of the kinetics of elementary reactions are discussed.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52141152534801,"sku":"NLS9789401086493","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789401086493.jpg?v=1757576556"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-david-hucknall.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
