This book argues that the therapeutic relationship cannot be reduced to particular words or therapeutic skills, but is a relationship encounter that promotes dialogue, contact and process. In each chapter, experts in different fields interpret the therapeutic relationship through the lens of their own modality, offering: Summaries of the key theoretical and research bases Example case studies of therapeutic interventions that illuminate key relational components of the approach and the development and management of the therapeutic relationship Study of the limitations, challenges and complexities of maintaining a therapeutic relationship Exploration of new developments in working with clients - capturing work that the authors and other colleagues have been involved in developing in that area The Therapeutic Relationship Handbook is a broad ranging guide for students as well as both new and experienced practitioners. Divine Charura is a Senior Lecturer in Counselling and Psychotherapy at Leeds Metropolitan University, UK. He is an Adult Psychotherapist who works in the NHS, voluntary sector and in private practice, as well as an independent trainer, supervisor and coach. Stephen Paul is a client-centred psychotherapist, practising in the areas of therapy, supervision and coaching. He retired as Director of The Centre for Psychological Therapies at Leeds Metropolitan University, UK in 2012 after 20 years of service. \"The editors and authors of this book have produced a volume of theory and practice that has tremendous breadth and scope and that is a thorough analysis of the many facets of the therapeutic relationship. Rich in knowledge and practical applications, the authors demonstrate not only an understanding of their field, but also an ability to communicate this with vignettes and examples that are relevant and enable understanding for both students and practitioners alike. The limitations and challenges of each approach are recognised and a detailed list of further references is given for the reader to explore if desired. I highly recommend this book for both students and practitioners and congratulate the editors and authors on their work. I will certainly use it in our Counselling Education Programs for both Bachelor and Master of Counselling students.\" Dr Ann Moir-Bussy, Program Leader and Senior Lecturer Counselling, University of Sunshine Coast. The editors, both highly experienced trainers and academics, have gathered together here a group of new and established writers who draw on personal and professional experiences to present an array of fresh ideas and approaches. Their aim is to inform training curriculathat would more adequately prepare therapy students to respond sensitively and in culturally appropriate ways to clients of diverse cultural and racial identities. Each chapter presents a challenge to all therapeutic practitioners, whatever their specialist role, to attend to and reflect on their personal and professional attitudes and behaviours in relation to clients of all heritages and origins. Issues addressed include unconscious privilege, 'othering', micro-aggressions, broaching, racism, discrimination, the search for meaning, identity complexity, intersectional understanding, heritage, biases and projections, trauma, intergenerational trauma, introjections, projection and decolonisation of the curriculum. This book is a wake-up call to the profession to develop more inclusive models of theory and practice, and to every counsellor, psychotherapist and counselling psychologist to review their professional practice and ensure a better fit between the aspirations and theories of their professional calling and the needs of our multi-ethnic, multiracial and multicultural society today.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49740506136849,"sku":"NGR9781910919897","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50577729421585,"sku":"GOR013352649","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51055797567761,"sku":"NIN9781910919897","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1910919896.jpg?v=1750835407"},{"product_id":"trauma-demystified-a-guide-for-students-and-practitioners-book-divine-charura-9780335251742","title":"Trauma Demystified: A Guide for Students and Practitioners","description":"“This book will be of immensurable value to counselling and psychotherapy students and qualified therapists alike.” Lesley Dougan, Programme Lead, MA Counselling \u0026amp; Psychotherapy Practice, Liverpool John Moores University, UK “Much is written about trauma, but much less is written with such a depth of practice experience, academic insight and an honouring of the human experience. The authors have brought together so much that is helpful to all those involved in working with trauma. An essential text that takes our understanding to a new level.” Professor Andrew Reeves, Professor of Counselling Professions and Mental Health, University of Chester, UK Trauma Demystified: A Guide for Students and Practitioners is a comprehensive yet accessible introduction to psychological trauma. The authors draw on a wealth of research to encourage readers to reflect and apply these theories to their own contexts. Practical case studies and vignettes guide the reader through each stage of the therapeutic relationship to inform their own treatment and practice. Incorporating a range of approaches and perspectives, the book explores the complex nature of trauma and understands it as a whole-body phenomenon that goes beyond an intrapsychic process. The authors examine the impact of wider societal factors and identify trauma as a relational experience, centring the therapeutic relationship as the means to healing. The book: •Covers topics such as boundary setting, treatment planning and post-traumatic growth •Adopts a transcultural, inclusive perspective •Breaks down complex ideas into accessible approaches •Bridges the gap between theory and practice Written from a multi-dimensional viewpoint, this book provides a holistic and nuanced exploration of trauma. For students and practitioners alike, Trauma Demystified provides a foundational understanding of historical and contemporary trauma practices. So many of life's distresses have their origins in lack of love, disruption of love, or trauma. People naturally seek love in their lives to feel complete. Is therapy a substitute for love? Or is it love by another name? This important book looks at the place of love in therapy and whether it is the curative factor. The authors continually stress, however, that within psychotherapy both ethical and professional boundaries should govern this 'Love' at all times in order for it to be experienced as healing and therapeutic. This book offers explorations of the complexity of love from different modalities: psychoanalytic, humanistic, person-centred, psychosexual, family and systemic, transpersonal, existential, and transcultural. The discussions challenge therapists and other allied professionals to think about their practice, ethics, and boundaries.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52477339730193,"sku":"NLS9780367103095","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780367103095.jpg?v=1759845459"},{"product_id":"love-and-therapy-book-divine-charura-9781782201953","title":"Love and Therapy","description":"This important book looks at the place of love in therapy and whether it is the curative factor.
