Red-funnelled ships which bear his name continue to operate in the West Highlands a century after his death. \"The Kingdom of MacBrayne\" tells the story of David MacBrayne, his ships and his company, his predecessors, rivals and successors. It explores the world of the early steamships, their successes and failures, as well as their contribution to the ever-changing social fabric of the Highlands and Islands.Emigrants, tourists, ordinary travellers and crew members, from engineers to pursers, speak of the ships and their impact on their world. \"The Kingdom of MacBrayne\" is lavishly illustrated with drawings, paintings and photographs in black-and-white and colour, most of them shown here for the first time. Featuring the work of artists and model-makers, as well as advertisements and brochures, it examines, by word and image, the whole 'MacBrayne phenomenon', from the iconic, sword-bearing Highlander on ships' figureheads to Katie Morag in Struay.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49538098037009,"sku":"GOR002970425","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50519321018641,"sku":"GOR010395176","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53176957174033,"sku":"GOR006482413","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1841586013.jpg?v=1751091387"},{"product_id":"kingdom-of-macbrayne-book-donald-e-meek-9781841585000","title":"The Kingdom of MacBrayne","description":"Shipowner David MacBrayne (1817-1907) is just as well-known as Samuel Cunard. Transport and communication improved massively, and the region was exposed to an ever-widening range of external influences. Many Highlanders reached out to the wider world, as soldiers, sailors and emigrants.  Others remained steadfastly on their crofts, and maintained vigorous Gaelic communities, while those who left their homeland also created Gaelic communities in the Scottish Lowlands or overseas. In different contexts, at home and abroad, they reflected on the vicissitudes of their lives, and no small number expressed themselves eloquently in song and verse. This is the first general anthology of nineteenth-century Gaelic verse to be published since 1879.  It covers all the main types of poetry produced in Gaelic during the nineteenth century.     Thirteen themes are represented – among them homeland, clearance, emigration, transport, life in Lowland cities, love, war and protest.     Theis anthology thus offers a fresh look at the poetic creativity of the nineteenth century, and the way in which song and verse were refashioned to meet the challenges of the time.  As the poets respond to 'the wiles of the world', their output covers the full sweep of human emotions, from sadness to rollicking humour, from nostalgia to robust protest and great hope for the future.  The poems are reproduced with English translations. These will allow the non-Gaelic reader to sample their stylistic sparkle, which has been seriously neglected until now.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49569848394001,"sku":"GOR004084490","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/187474467X.jpg?v=1751123153"},{"product_id":"caran-an-t-saoghail-the-wiles-of-the-world-book-donald-e-meek-9781912476800","title":"Caran An-t-saoghail (The Wiles of the World)","description":"The Highlands and Islands of Scotland experienced massive changes during the nineteenth century.  Economic restructuring, introducing sheep and deer and encouraging clearance and eviction, is the best known change, but it was by no means the only one. This question, debated within the ecumenical movement from the outset, is the force of the World Council of Churches' 1996 world conference on mission and evangelism. In these short pamphlets, edited by Christopher Duraisingh, Christians from a diversity of cultural contexts describe and reflect on what it has meant for the gospel to be proclaimed and lived out within the setting of their own culture, thus pointing to both the richness and challenges of this encounter. Early missionaries saw the Highlands and islands of northern Scotland as a 'wintry region' inhabited by 'wild and uncivilized Scots' who needed to be subdued by the preaching of the gospel and the suppression of Gaelic language and culture. Yet from the 19th century on, Protestant churches in the Highlands embraced Gaelic as a medium of spiritual communication and forged a strong bond between language and a distinctive evangelical spirituality. How can these churches face the growing decline and rejection of this culture -- so much of which is of their own making -- in the changing world of today?","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53029544263953,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53029544329489,"sku":"GOR008239008","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9782825412046.jpg?v=1768567168"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-donald-e-meek.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
