This is the first book to trace the complete history of the Abbey of Holyrood and its burgh of Canongate from prehistoric times to the present day, and underlines the mixed fortunes that have characterised this part of Edinburgh. Both the abbey and the burgh were built on a narrow strip of land wedged between boggy ground. This geology and geography would impact on the lives of the people from the outset until today. By the early sixteenth century part of the abbey complex had been converted into a royal palace, and by 1600 a court precinct also existed, extending into what is now the site of Scotland's new parliament. However, with the departure of James VI when he inherited the English throne, and the subsequent Union of Parliaments in 1707, the area's fortunes declined, leading Allan Ramsay to write: 'O Canningate! Pooer elritch hole!\/What loss, what crosses does thou thole!'   This book is the story of the people above, those who lived in elegant mansions, including Queensberry House, now part of the parliament complex. But it is also the story of the people below, who lived in conditions which were the worst in Scotland. By 1900 Canongate was a vast industrial zone, dominated by breweries, glassworks and gas works. Many of its inhabitants would be relocated in the twentieth century, and not always willingly. By the end of the century a decision was made to house Scotland's new parliament in Canongate. A historic site had been chosen. But with the completion of Enric Miralles' award-winning building and the Parliament now in session, Patricia Dennison is led to finish her perceptive and informative study by pondering how all this will impact on the old burgh as it faces the twenty-first century.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49523731726609,"sku":"GOR005340396","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51681763524881,"sku":"GOR014354915","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1841584045.jpg?v=1751091382"},{"product_id":"painting-the-town-book-e-patricia-dennison-9781908332042","title":"Painting the Town","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49569618297105,"sku":"GOR009419463","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53108266270993,"sku":"GOR014745936","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1908332042.jpg?v=1776938410"},{"product_id":"historic-dunfermline-book-e-patricia-dennison-9780955724404","title":"Historic Dunfermline","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49620922138897,"sku":"GOR007676170","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0955724406.jpg?v=1750748089"},{"product_id":"historic-maybole-book-e-patricia-dennison-9781902771519","title":"Historic Maybole","description":"The historic town of Maybole lies equidistant from the burghs of Ayr and Girvan in South Ayrshire. The development of the medieval town was influenced by the tempestuous history of local rivalries and feuds - encouraging the building of substantial defensible townhouses, of which the castle and the tolbooth survive today, as well as a distinctive urban defensible townhouse that had been hidden beneath later remodelling. There are other glimpes of earlier remains and evidence of settlement patterns in the eighteenth and nineteenth-century townhouses in the heart of the town and in the burgage plots either side of the High Street. The core of earlier medieval settlement lies around the collegiate church and old kirkyard, as well as the site of the original church in Maybole, The volume also traces the industrial growth and thriving economic life of nineteenth-century Maybole, with new civic building, factory developments and residential expansion. The rapid changes of the last century are fully explored, and an evaluation made about the surviving evidence. The authors look at the archaeological potential of key sites in the town, to both direct more detailed research and help protect Maybole's heritage. This survey provides an accessible and broad-ranging synthesis of existing knowledge on historic Maybole, as well as offering invaluable guidance for planners. The book is part of the Scottish burgh survey - a series designed to identify which areas of Scotland's historic burghs are of archaeological interest.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50683831091473,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50683831550225,"sku":"GOR014035007","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53564360098065,"sku":"GOR008247196","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1902771516.jpg?v=1751028239"},{"product_id":"historic-kilsyth-book-e-patricia-dennison-9781902771571","title":"Historic Kilsyth","description":"Charts the developemt of the historic town of Kilsyth from the scatter of ferm touns in the area in the late 1500s, through to  the elevation of Kilsyth to a burgh of barony in 1620 and the  subsequent expansion of the 'new town', serving as a market and a  centre of the textile industry. The historic town of Barrhead is situated to the west of Glasgow in East Renfrewshire. Barrhead was created in the late 18th century and grew rapidly because it was in the right place at the right time. It was close to the emerging commercial centres of Glasgow and Paisley and could rely on the Levern Water to power a booming textile industry. The valley in which the town grew also has a rich earlier history. The book identifies medieval sites and charts the development of the town from the scatter of fermtouns shown on early maps and goes on to sketch the social history of a community shaped by the industrial revolution. Barrhead was elevated to the status of a burgh in 1893. Although the textile industry was in decline by this time, the lost jobs were replaced by heavy industries. The authors look at the history and archaeological potential of key sites in the town, to inform the future management of Barrhead's heritage.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51548369027345,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51548369125649,"sku":"GOR008608827","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1902771699.jpg?v=1750834573"},{"product_id":"historic-linlithgow-book-e-patricia-dennison-9781840170139","title":"Historic Linlithgow","description":"This text contains historical and archaeological information for academics and interested general readers on the historic town of Linlithgow.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53456572776721,"sku":"GOR014929924","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53456729604369,"sku":"GOR009178085","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781840170139.jpg?v=1776987712"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-e-patricia-dennison.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
