(A version of The Scream was stolen from the Edvard Munch Museum in Oslo, Norway, in August 2004, and has not yet been recovered.) But Munch considered himself a writer as well as a painter. Munch began painting as a teenager and, in his young adulthood, studied and worked in Paris and Berlin, where he evolved a highly personal style in paintings and works on paper. And in diaries that he kept for decades, he also experimented with reminiscence, fiction, prose portraits, philosophical speculations, and surrealism. Known as an artist who captured both the ecstasies and the hellish depths of the human condition, Munch conveys these emotions in his diaries but also reveals other facets of his personality in remarks and stories that are alternately droll, compassionate, romantic, and cerebral. This English translation of Edward Munch's private diaries, the most extensive edition to appear in any language, captures the eloquent lyricism of the original Norwegian text. The journal entries in this volume span the period from the 1880s, when Munch was in his twenties, until the 1930s, reflecting the changes in his life and his work. The book is illustrated with fifteen of Munch's drawings, many of them rarely seen before. Though excerpts from these diaries have been previously published elsewhere, no translation has captured the real passion and poetry of Munch's voice. This translation lets Munch speak for himself and evokes the primal passion of his diaries. J. Gill Holland's exceptional work adds a whole new level to our understanding of the artist and the depth of his scream.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50812702425361,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50812702884113,"sku":"CIN0299198146VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51456779157777,"sku":"CIN0299198146G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51600488857873,"sku":"GOR006396111","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53058645983505,"sku":"GOR014720044","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0299198146.jpg?v=1759572094"},{"product_id":"munch-revisited-book-edvard-munch-9783938025093","title":"Munch Revisited","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50822788382993,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50822788841745,"sku":"GOR014087043","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3938025093.jpg?v=1750903102"},{"product_id":"edvard-munch-archetypes-book-edvard-munch-9788415113737","title":"Edvard Munch: Archetypes","description":"Challenges our preconceptions of Edvard Munch by illustrating the remarkable stylistic and emotional breadth of his paintings -- taking us well beyond the reductive association of Munch only with the iconic work \"The Scream\"  Edvard Munch: Archetypes brings together a thematic selection of 80 works -- in full-page, museum-quality reproductions -- that examine the painter’s long and prolific career and reveal his ability to synthesize the obsessions of modern humanity. This is the first book to emphasize the wide spectrum of emotional archetypes through which Munch reveals various existential obsessions such as love, desire, jealousy, angst and death, and states of mind including melancholy, passion and submission. Each section of the volume is structured around these archetypes, showing the representation of the human figure in various settings: the seaside, the sickroom, the 'green room,' the woods, the night and the artist’s studio. It combines early works with late versions and paintings with graphic works so as to underscore the thematic and existential circularity of Munch’s oeuvre.  The art of Edvard Munch (1863–1944), who is today considered one of the forefathers of modern art along with Cézanne, van Gogh and Gauguin, developed from a distinctive blend of tradition and experimentation. From the beginnings of his career, the Norwegian artist created a particular mythology for modern times that was in close step with the art, literature and thought of his contemporaries. His aesthetic language, which evolved from Symbolism to Expressionism, deployed various strategies to construct a pictorial narrative of the most universal subjects.  Edvard Munch (1863–1944) was born in Løten, Norway, and studied design and art in Oslo. In May of 1885 he traveled to Paris on a scholarship, and after the deaths of his sister and father the following year, he began to spend most of his time in France. His painting first achieved fame with an 1892 exhibition in Berlin, which also led directly to his influence upon the German Expressionists. Despite struggles with alcohol and mental health, Munch lived to the age of 80.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53522857689361,"sku":"NLS9788415113737","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9788415113737.jpg?v=1778460095"},{"product_id":"edvard-munch-expressionism-symbolism-art-book-edvard-munch-9798840420898","title":"Edvard Munch Expressionism \u0026 Symbolism Art","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53690748829969,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53690748928273,"sku":"NIN9798840420898","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9798840420898.jpg?v=1781986798"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-edvard-munch.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
