These were the famine emigrants. The world has not seen such an exodus before or since. In those five years the population of the United States grew by one-seventh. At the same time, the Irish Potato Famine claimed a million lives. The year 1996 marks the 150th anniversary of the famine and the first famine sailings. This book tells the story of the courage and determination of those who crossed the ocean in leaky, overcrowded sailing ships and forged new lives for themselves. Among them a small boy called Henry Ford and 26-year-old Patrick Kennedy, the great-grandfather of John F. Kennedy. The book traces the history of the five years of famine sailings, and includes numerous personal stories, such as that of the parish priest from County Wexford, who led 18 families across the Atlantic and from there, on up the Mississippi\/Missouri to found Wexford, Iowa, where the emigrants' descendants still live today. Edward Laxton conducted five years of research in Ireland and among descendants in the United States. The book includes facsimile passenger lists, tickets, letters and other memorabilia. It also features information for Irish-Americans who wish to trace their ancestry.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49543057965329,"sku":"GOR002068356","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49624618631441,"sku":"GOR002528794","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49640629666065,"sku":"GOR002290025","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0747525358.jpg?v=1751429440"},{"product_id":"famine-ships-book-edward-laxton-9780747535003","title":"The Famine Ships","description":"Tells the story of the courage of those who crossed the Atlantic in overcrowded sailing ships and made new lives for themselves, among them William Ford, father of Henry Ford and twenty six year old Patrick Kennedy, great-grandfather of John F. A young warden was cultivating a plot of cannabis plants in the Lions' Reserve at Longleat Safari Park, in Wiltshire. This became an inquiry for the detective and a potential story for a Mirror reporter, which is how the author and detective met.  Together they became entrenched in the biggest drugs scandal Britain has ever known. The same Longleaf warden had also offered up LSD tabs - any amount from 1,000 to 10,000 at a time - which led to the start of `Operation Julie', still the biggest UK drugs `bust' ever, with 130 arrests and 214 years in sentences for the masterminds.  This book covers the adventures within the operation from Det Sgt Martyn Pritchard's unique perspective, along with some of his further exploits along the way, including the launch of the Reading Music Festival; the expose of Howard `Mr Nice' Marks; and the perils and rigours of living and working undercover in the 70s.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49946381844753,"sku":"GOR010606796","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49948628648209,"sku":"GOR009504081","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49958906659089,"sku":"GOR009349713","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53135728017681,"sku":"GOR014766383","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1912624052.jpg?v=1751428281"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-edward-laxton.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
