He details the tensions along the DMZ during events such as the downing of KAL flight 007 and President Ronald Reagan's historic visit. While in Louisiana he deployed to Germany for REFORGER in 1984. In the Coast Guard he was an enlisted man obtaining the rank of master chief petty officer (E-9), was commissioned as an officer, and retired as a lieutenant (0-3E). He served at several shore stations and afloat in the Sumac (WLR-311), Seneca (WMEC-906), Tampa (WMEC-902), Eagle (WIX-327), Sherman (WHEC-720), and Dependable (WMEC-626). In Eagle he sailed on her summer 1998 cruise. In 1999, as a senior chief petty officer (E-8), he attended the U.S. Air Force Senior Non-commissioned Officer Academy. While in the Sherman he held the position of command enlisted advisor and made her historic deployment to the Persian Gulf and circumnavigation of the globe in 2001. He details the Coast Guards mission in the Persian Gulf to enforce United Nations sanctions, boarding suspected oil smuggling vessels, and the sinking of the M\/V Zainab. In Dependable, as an officer, he served as the assistant engineering officer (AEO) and damage control assistant (DCA). During his tour aboard the Mighty D he details illegal migrant operations and numerous multi-million dollar drug busts to include the $274 million dollars in drugs found aboard the M\/V Miss Mery Hill.
