Global Objects points the way to an interconnected history of art, examining a broad array of functional aesthetic objects that transcend geographic and temporal boundaries and challenging preconceived ideas about what is and is not art.  Avoiding traditional binaries such as East versus West and fine art versus decorative art, Edward Cooke looks at the production, consumption, and circulation of objects made from clay, fiber, wood, and nonferrous base metals. Carefully considering the materials and process of making, and connecting process to product and people, he demonstrates how objects act on those who look at, use, and acquire them. He reveals how objects retain aspects of their local fabrication while absorbing additional meanings in subtle and unexpected ways as they move through space and time. In emphasizing multiple centers of art production amid constantly changing contexts, Cooke moves beyond regional histories driven by geography, nation-state, time period, or medium.  Beautifully illustrated, Global Objects traces the social lives of objects from creation to purchase, and from use to experienced meaning, charting exciting new directions in art history.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49577050472721,"sku":"GOR012731611","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49744331342097,"sku":"NGR9780691184739","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50973866459409,"sku":"CIN0691184739G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51005692477713,"sku":"NIN9780691184739","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52843811078417,"sku":"CIN0691184739VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0691184739.jpg?v=1750944628"},{"product_id":"new-american-furniture-book-edward-s-cooke-jr-9780878463152","title":"New American Furniture","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49984214171921,"sku":"CIN0878463151G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0878463151.jpg?v=1750980405"},{"product_id":"upholstery-in-america-and-europe-from-the-seventeenth-century-to-world-war-i-book-edward-s-cooke-jr-9780393024692","title":"Upholstery in America and Europe from the Seventeenth Century to World War I","description":"Despite the fact that for centuries a room's uphosltery was its most dominant and expensive feature, uphosltery was formerly one of the most neglected areas of study. This groundbreaking volume presents the latest research and analysis of leading scholars in the field and explores virtually every aspect of upholstery at different periods and in different places for some of three hundred years.   Subjects range from types of fabrics and trimmings used, to the many different styles of hanging draperies, to the shapes of seats and cushions, to the place of the upholsterer in society. Special emphasis is placed on detailed analyses of craft practices such as the methods used to cut draperies and the techniques of building foundations for upholstered furniture.   This book will thus enable today's craftsmen to recreate the styles, shapes and decorative finishes of the past times far more accurately than has been possible before. Copiously illustrated with over 250 photographs and line drawings, Upholstery in American and Europe will correct many commonly held but mistaken ideas about interior decoration in the past. It will be an essential resource for curators, conservators, craftsmen, collectors, decorators, and anyone else interested in antique furnishings.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50352267362577,"sku":"CIN0393024695G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50710819832081,"sku":"GOR014044089","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52693655650577,"sku":"GOR003794765","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53618892308753,"sku":"GOR005597787","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0393024695.jpg?v=1750781257"},{"product_id":"makers-hand-american-studio-furniture-1940-1990-book-edward-s-cooke-jr-9780878466627","title":"The Makers Hand - American Studio Furniture 1940-1990","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50371162538257,"sku":"CIN0878466622G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0878466622.jpg?v=1751234981"},{"product_id":"making-furniture-in-preindustrial-america-book-edward-s-cooke-jr-9781421436050","title":"Making Furniture in Preindustrial America","description":"Cooke offers a fresh and appealing cross-disciplinary study of the furnituremakers, social structure, household possessions, and surviving pieces of furniture of two neighboring New England communities.  Winner of the Decorative Arts Society, Inc.'s Charles F. Montgomery Prize  Originally published in 1996. In Making Furniture in Preindustrial America Edward S. Cooke Jr. offers a fresh and appealing cross-disciplinary study of the furnituremakers, social structure, household possessions, and surviving pieces of furniture of two neighboring New England communities. Drawing on both documentary and artifactual sources, Cooke explores the interplay among producer, process, and style in demonstrating why and how the social economies of these two seemingly similar towns differed significantly during the late colonial and early national periods.   Throughout the latter half of the eighteenth century, Cooke explains, the yeoman town of Newtown relied on native joiners whose work satisfied the expectations of their fellow townspeople. These traditionalists combined craftwork with farming and made relatively plain, conservative furniture. By contrast, the typical joiner in the neighboring gentry town of Woodbury was the immigrant innovator. Born and raised elsewhere in Connecticut and serving a diverse clientele, these craftsmen were free of the cultural constraints that affected their Newtown contemporaries. Relying almost entirely on furnituremaking for their livelihood, they were free to pay greater attention to stylistically sensitive features than to mere function.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51231101124881,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51231102206225,"sku":"NIN9781421436050","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52486857294097,"sku":"NLS9781421436050","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1421436051.jpg?v=1750794272"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-edward-s-cooke-jr.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
