Elaine Sommers Rich gives this as a reason for having written this book. Along with Esther Miller, a Voluntary Service unit member, Rich takes us onto the receiving ward of a state mental hospital in the summer of 1948 following her freshman year in college. The charge attendant on Esther's ward has a treat 'em rough attitude toward the mentally ill, an attitude which immediately poses serious problems for Esther. Her emotional life is further complicated when she becomes infatuated with tall, blond Philip Landis from the East. One of Esther's dreams comes true when she gets to set up an art project for patients as part of a therapy program initiated by the VS unit. Christian idealists will like this story of a young girl's love affair with life. Elaine Sommers Rich gave three summers of her youth in projects for college students sponsored by Mennonite Central Committee. Having taught at Goshen College, Goshen, IN, and Bethel College, North Newton, KS, she is well acquainted with the young people about whom she writes. Rich's earlier books are Breaking Bread Together (1958) and Hannah Elizabeth (1964). She now lives in Bluffton, OH.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51030577774865,"sku":"NIN9781498218986","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51630385955089,"sku":"NGR9781498218986","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52147677397265,"sku":"NLS9781498218986","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1498218989.jpg?v=1751179805"},{"product_id":"mennonite-women-book-elaine-sommers-rich-9781579109110","title":"Mennonite Women","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51037598941457,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51037601267985,"sku":"NIN9781579109110","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52479599902993,"sku":"NLS9781579109110","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/157910911X.jpg?v=1751213134"},{"product_id":"hannah-elizabeth-book-elaine-sommers-rich-9781579109233","title":"Hannah Elizabeth","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51182188134673,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51182192623889,"sku":"NIN9781579109233","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52479892947217,"sku":"NLS9781579109233","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1579109233.jpg?v=1751056115"},{"product_id":"breaking-bread-together-book-elaine-sommers-rich-9781556351556","title":"Breaking Bread Together","description":"These meditations have been written when the children were sleeping, while dinner was roasting in the oven, during convalescence in the hospital, between final examinations and the new semester -- during whatever chinks of time we could find in our days. We suspect that sometimes you will almost feel children having measles or mumps between one paragraph and another. . . . The twelve of us who have shared our inner lives with you in this book deeply feel the need for fellowship with one another in the Lord. We wish to break the bread of life with you in these pages, and we pray that the Lord Himself may use our words to His glory. --from the Preface Elaine Sommers Rich received her M.A. from Michigan State University. She has written for Mennonite publications and has authored, among other titles, Mennonite Women and the novel Hannah Elizabeth. Elaine and her husband, Ronald L. Rich, a retired professor of chemistry, have four grown children and four grandchildren. They live in Bluffton, Ohio. In addition to rearing her family and writing, Elaine has taught part-time at colleges and universities in Indiana, Kansas, Ohio, and Japan.
