Over the years; many have been drawn into the excitement of searching for these hidden treasures that might reveal lost histories of an individual; a family or a whole culture. Many of the rarest and most beautiful objects in museum collections today were once deliberately placed in the ground by their owners and never recovered until found by an archaeologist; metal detectorist or; in some cases; just an ordinary passer-by.This book will investigate the most interesting and bountiful hoard discoveries as well as studying the practise of hoarding itself. Exploring the great variety of hoards all the way from Bronze-Age weapon deposits; Greek and Roman coin hoards; impressive Viking wealth; to gold sovereigns hidden in the twentieth century; this book will consider who was responsible for the hoarding; and why they might have been compelled to do so. These motivations may shed light on times of economic upheaval or reveal more complex social and ritual customs.Illustrated with colour photographs that show the appearance of finds at the time of their discovery and the beauty of individual treasures contained within them such as rare coins and exquisite metalwork; this book is the ideal introduction for history enthusiasts or those with an insatiable curiosity for buried treasure.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49541887426833,"sku":"GOR008175919","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49732267409681,"sku":"NGR9780714118253","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51686546964753,"sku":"GOR010668424","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53333550924049,"sku":"GOR010856257","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0714118257.jpg?v=1750913125"},{"product_id":"recent-discoveries-of-tetrarchic-hoards-from-roman-britain-and-their-wider-conte-book-eleanor-ghey-9780861592364","title":"Recent Discoveries of Tetrarchic Hoards from Roman Britain and their Wider Context","description":"This volume was prompted by the recent discovery in Britain of two large coin hoards dating from the first decade of the fourth century AD – Wold Newton and Rauceby. Coins of this early Tetrarchic period are relatively uncommon finds in Britain and elsewhere, due mainly to the brevity of their periods of issue followed by successive reductions in the weight of the coinage. The book also republishes the 1944 Fyfield hoard within the context of these more recent finds and contains preliminary reports on two very large hoards of coins of the same period that have been found in recent years in France (Juillac) and Spain (Tomares).The Tetrarchic system of rule (AD 293−c. 313) was initiated by the Roman Emperor Diocletian to stabilise the Roman Empire, with the rule of the western and eastern Empire being split between two senior emperors and their two junior colleagues. The transition from the third to fourth century AD is a pivotal phase in the history of Roman Britain, with Britain coming once again under the control of the Empire following periods of turbulence and usurper rule between AD 260−296. Under the Tetrarchy, Britain was subjected to the extensive monetary reforms undertaken by Diocletian which saw the introduction of the denomination now referred to as the nummus. The period is of particular interest to numismatists as during this time Roman coinage was minted in Britain at the mint of London. The volume therefore covers not just the hoards themselves, but also considers the wider significance of these hoards for Britain and the early fourth century monetary economy, particularly in the western empire.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49753346179345,"sku":"NGR9780861592364","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51356426010897,"sku":"GOR014236259","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0861592360.jpg?v=1750850930"},{"product_id":"beau-street-hoard-book-eleanor-ghey-9780714118260","title":"The Beau Street Hoard","description":"In 2007 during an archaeological excavation in advance of a hotel development situated 150 metres from the Roman Baths in Bath, a Roman silver coin hoard was unearthed. This hoard was an exceptional find, not only because of its size - 17,500 coins in tota l - but also because of a number of unusual characteristics. Unlike other similar Roman hoards, the coins were discovered in a series of eight money bags - almost eight mini hoards in one - that are likely to have been deposited gradually over time. This small and beautifully illustrated book tells the story of this remarkable find, focussing on the discovery, scientific investigation, interpretation of the hoard, and the parallels and context in the Roman world.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50479970124049,"sku":"GOR006746652","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0714118265.jpg?v=1751443629"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-eleanor-ghey.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
