Mediaeval inscriptions were made by donors to commemorate people, and they enable modern reader to find out about the lives of individuals and communities in the past in detail that would not otherwise be possible: their family origins, education, professional achievements, political connections and service. The subsequent history of inscriptions - survival, loss, or relocation - is sometimes evidence of the resilience of local communities but it may reveal the turbulent history of the buildings for which the inscriptions were intended. The careful drawings and notes of antiquaries are testament to their belief in the value of preserving what they saw. Assembled here, we have a rich record of the artistic culture of the county in the mediaeval period. Each entry includes the type of artefact, the dimensions where known, the materials and type of lettering, a description, the text of the inscription (and a translation of non-English text), a commentary and references to previous notices. There is a scholarly introduction to the context of the inscriptions, a selection of illustrations, a map to help with location of parishes, and a series of indices to facilitate use of the catalogue. This volume completes Oxfordshire Record Society's publication of a two-part, comprehensive catalogue of Oxfordshire's mediaeval epigraphy. The first volume, published in 2020, covered the inscriptions of the city and university of Oxford.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49755074330897,"sku":"NGR9780902509801","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0902509802.jpg?v=1750747713"},{"product_id":"register-of-john-salmon-bishop-of-norwich-1299-1325-book-elizabeth-gemmill-9780907239826","title":"The Register of John Salmon, bishop of Norwich, 1299-1325","description":"Edition with full notes of a fourteenth-century bishop's register, one of the few complete extant. John Salmon's register is the earliest to survive for the diocese of Norwich: a complete record of institutions to ecclesiastical benefices during the quarter-century of his episcopate, from 1299 to 1325. Although his diocese wasnot the wealthiest in England, the early fourteenth century saw the region at the height of its ecclesiastical powers, with an abundance of churches and chapels and numerous religious houses. Institutions to benefices and offices were at the heart of the work of the medieval bishop. This edition, which takes the form of a calendar supplemented with transcriptions and translations of entries of special interest, enables a detailed and thorough examination of the character and qualifications of the clergy who served local communities at the beginning of the fourteenth century; of the motives of the patrons who presented them to their livings; and of the concerns of the bishop himself. While there has been work on the nobility as patrons of monasteries, this is the first real study of them as patrons of parish churches, and is thus the first study to tackle the subject as a whole. Illustrated with a wealth of detail, it will become an indispensable work of reference for those interested in lay patronage and the Church more generally in the middle ages. Professor David Carpenter, Department of History, King's College London This book provides the first full-length, integrated study of the ecclesiastical patronage rights of the nobility in medieval England. It examines the nature and extent of these rights, how they were used, why and for whom they were valuable, what challenges lay patrons faced, and how they looked to the future in making gifts to the Church. It takes as its focus the thirteenth century, a critical period for the survival and development of these rights, being a time of ambitious Church reform, of great change in patterns of land ownership in the ranks of the higher nobility, and of bold assertion by the English Crown of its claims to control Church property. The thirteenth century also saw a proliferation of record keeping on the part of kings, bishops and nobility, and the author uses new evidence from a range of documentary sources to explore the nature of the relationships between the English nobility, theChurch and its clergy, a relationship in which patronage was the essential feature. Dr Elizabeth Gemmill is University Lecturer in Local History and Fellow of Kellogg College. University of Oxford.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51058606801169,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51058609291537,"sku":"NIN9781843838128","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52454088016145,"sku":"NLS9781843838128","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1843838125.jpg?v=1751092171"},{"product_id":"register-of-john-salmon-bishop-of-norwich-1299-1325-book-elizabeth-gemmill-9780907239895","title":"The Register of John Salmon, bishop of Norwich, 1299-1325","description":"John Salmon's fourteenth-century register brings to life the day-to-day world of a medieval bishop.
