{"title":"Emily Zobel Marshall","description":null,"products":[{"product_id":"american-trickster-book-emily-zobel-marshall-9781783481095","title":"American Trickster","description":"Our fascination with the trickster figure, whose presence is global, stems from our desire to break free from the tightly regimented structures of our societies. Condemned to conform to laws and rules imposed by governments, communities, social groups and family bonds, we revel in the fantasy of the trickster whose energy and cunning knows no bounds and for whom nothing is sacred. One such trickster is Brer Rabbit, who was introduced to North America through the folktales of enslaved Africans. On the plantations, Brer Rabbit, like Anansi in the Caribbean, functioned as a resistance figure for the enslaved whose trickery was aimed at undermining and challenging the plantation regime. Yet as Brer Rabbit tales moved from the oral tradition to the printed page in the late nineteenth-century, the trickster was emptied of his potentially powerful symbolism by white American collectors, authors and folklorists in their attempt to create a nostalgic fantasy of the plantation past.  American Trickster offers readers a unique insight into the cultural significance of the Brer Rabbit trickster figure, from his African roots and through to his influence on contemporary culture. Exploring the changing portrayals of the trickster figure through a wealth of cultural forms including folktales, advertising, fiction and films the book scrutinises the profound tensions between the perpetuation of damaging racial stereotypes and the need to keep African-American folk traditions alive. Emily Zobel Marshall argues that Brer Rabbit was eventually reclaimed by twentieth-century African-American novelists whose protagonists ‘trick’ their way out of limiting stereotypes, break down social and cultural boundaries and offer readers practical and psychological methods for challenging the traumatic legacies of slavery and racism.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49733170692369,"sku":"NGR9781783481095","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52536436621585,"sku":"NLS9781783481095","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1783481099.jpg?v=1751312953"},{"product_id":"bath-of-herbs-book-emily-zobel-marshall-9781845235574","title":"Bath of Herbs","description":"Emily Zobel Marshall spent her childhood in a remote village in the mountains of Snowdonia in North Wales with her Black Caribbean mother and white English father.Bath of Herbs is a beautifully crafted, honest and thoughtful first collection which explores the complexity of mixed-race, hybrid identities and relationships to the English and Welsh mountains, fells, rivers and shorelines from an ' othered' , unmappable, positionality.Linking the whole is an engagement with the possibilities of healing: as in the bath of herbs in which her grandmother bathed her mother after giving birth; in the physicality of running and purificatory swimming in a river; in the care a hospital gives to her child and in the healing power of the natural world.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49751863853329,"sku":"NGR9781845235574","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51776756547857,"sku":"GOR014399371","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52325500354833,"sku":"GOR014505006","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53469190816017,"sku":"GOR014935269","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1845235576.jpg?v=1751280283"},{"product_id":"anansi-book-emily-zobel-marshall-9781804179345","title":"Anansi","description":"Featuring the full Flame Tree treatment, with new stories from open submissions alongside the classic stories and fascinating background, this gorgeous new book reveals the origins, development and relevance of the wily, clever and complex figure of the trickster god Anansi.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51051896373521,"sku":"NIN9781804179345","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51216193487121,"sku":"NGR9781804179345","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ LIKE_NEW \/ SBYB","offer_id":52901986795793,"sku":"CIN1804179345LN","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53379347317009,"sku":"GOR014889118","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53598640832785,"sku":"CIN1804179345G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1804179345.jpg?v=1751060320"},{"product_id":"anansi-s-journey-book-emily-zobel-marshall-9789766402617","title":"Anansi's Journey","description":"This interdisciplinary study examines the cultural and historical significance of the Jamaican Anansi folktales.  Anansi the spider is the trickster folk hero West African slaves transported to the Caribbean, who symbolises key aspects of Afro-Caribbean culture and is celebrated as a vital link with an African past. Anansi stories, in which the small spider turns the tables on his powerful enemies through cunning and trickery, are now told and published worldwide.  Anansi survived a cultural metamorphosis and came to symbolise the resistance of the Jamaican people. This original book examines Anansi’s roots in Ghana, details the changes Anansi underwent during the Middle Passage and his potential for inspiring tactics of resistance in a plantation context, and analyses Anansi’s role in postcolonial Jamaica, illustrating how he is interpreted as a symbol of individualism and celebrated as an emblem of resistance.  With its broad historical sweep, tracing Anansi from Ghana through to his contested position in contemporary Jamaica, this book makes an important contribution to the ongoing debate about whether the slave trade transmitted or destroyed the culture of the enslaved.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51067956756753,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51067957412113,"sku":"NIN9789766402617","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/B007AF54G8.jpg?v=1762596537"},{"product_id":"oluwale-now-book-emily-zobel-marshall-9781845235819","title":"Oluwale Now","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51393887699217,"sku":"NGR9781845235819","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51399810253073,"sku":"GOR014258104","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1845235819.jpg?v=1751249193"},{"product_id":"other-wild-book-emily-zobel-marshall-9781845236045","title":"Other Wild","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51629359497489,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51629359792401,"sku":"NGR9781845236045","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53127363559697,"sku":"GOR014758235","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53367415341329,"sku":"GOR014882012","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1845236041.jpg?v=1750995253"},{"product_id":"american-trickster-book-emily-zobel-marshall-9781783481101","title":"American Trickster","description":"This book examines the cultural significance of the North American trickster figure Brer Rabbit.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51688135557393,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51688135688465,"sku":"NIN9781783481101","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51985887723793,"sku":"GOR014472807","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52536203870481,"sku":"NLS9781783481101","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1783481102.jpg?v=1750801710"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-emily-zobel-marshall.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
