The Origin and Evolution of Life is a welcoming introduction to the understanding of the origin and evolution of life. The authors capture the attention of all readers, be they well versed in theories of the origin of life and the Theory of Evolution or those that possess little knowledge of these interesting subjects. The authors discuss the origin of life from religious narratives to scientific-based accounts, leading to the conclusion that we still do not know how life began, but strive to do so. The Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection, presented simultaneously by Charles Darwin and Alfred Wallace, is one of the greatest ideas of all time. However, new discoveries in molecular genetics, microbiology, and systems biology have necessitated an extension\/revision of the classical frame of evolutionary theory. These new discoveries include epigenetics, alteration of the environment, learning and cultural transmission, and the role of microorganisms in the evolution of animals and plants: the hologenome concept. Where Did We Come From? The Origin and Evolution of Life also provides a glimpse of how theories of evolution can affect our understanding of social phenomena, such as motherhood and social standing, biological cooperation versus Social Darwinism, and collective memory. Through an accessible authorial voice and clarity, not burdened with superfluous jargon, the authors engage with readers and lead them to become well-informed on these captivating subjects.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51629958594833,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51629958824209,"sku":"NGR9781035856640","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52745798582545,"sku":"NIN9781035856640","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1035856646.jpg?v=1750751468"},{"product_id":"beneficial-microorganisms-in-multicellular-life-forms-book-eugene-rosenberg-9783642433665","title":"Beneficial Microorganisms in Multicellular Life Forms","description":"All animals and plants form associations with hundreds or thousands of different beneficial microorganisms. This book brings together a group of diverse biologists to discuss microbial interactions with multicellular life forms including insects, corals, plants, and mammals, including humans. The various mechanisms by which microorganisms benefit their hosts are discussed, including providing essential nutrients, preventing disease, inducing the immune system, and combating stress.  Since the microbiota can be transferred from parent to offspring, it plays an important role in the origin and evolution of animal and plant species. This concept posits that the holobiont (host plus all of its associated microorganisms) and its hologenome (sum of the genetic information of the host and its symbiotic microorganisms), acting in concert, function as a unique biological entity and therefore as a level of selection in evolution. All animals and plants harbor abundant and diverse microbiota, including viruses. Often the amount of symbiotic microorganisms and their combined genetic information far exceed that of their host. The microbiota with its microbiome, together with the host genome, can be transmitted from one generation to the next and thus propagate the unique properties of the holobiont. The microbial symbionts and the host interact in a cooperative way that affects the health of the holobiont within its environment. Beneficial microbiota protects against pathogens, provides essential nutrients, catabolizes complex polysaccharides, renders harmful chemicals inert, and contributes to the performance of the immune system. In humans and animals, the microbiota also plays a role in behavior. The sum of these cooperative interactions characterizes the holobiont as a unique biological entity. Genetic variation in the hologenome can be brought about by changes in either the host genome or the microbial population genomes (microbiome). Evolution by cooperation can occur by amplifying existing microbes, gaining novel microbiota and by acquiring microbial and viral genes. Under environmental stress, the microbiome can change more rapidly and in response to more processes than the host organism alone and thus influences the evolution of the holobiont. Prebiotics, probiotics, synbiotics and phage therapy are discussed as applied aspects of the hologenome concept.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52500821147921,"sku":"NGR9783319042404","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53522938364177,"sku":"NLS9783319042404","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319042404.jpg?v=1760138977"},{"product_id":"prokaryotes-book-eugene-rosenberg-9783642301933","title":"The Prokaryotes","description":"This fourth edition of The Prokaryotes is organized to cover all taxonomic diversity, using the family level to delineate chapters. Corals are endangered due to natural and anthropogenic detrimental factors, such as global warming and environmental pollution. Based on an international meeting on \"Coral Health and Disease\" in Eilat, Israel in April 2003, the book starts with case studies of reefs, e.g. the Red Sea, Caribbean, Japan, Indian Ocean and the Great Barrier Reef. The second part on microbial ecology and physiology describes the symbiotic relations of corals and microbes, and the microbial role in nutrition or bleaching resistance of corals. Particular coral diseases such as aspergillosis, white pox, black and white band diseases are treated in the third part.
