Should religious beliefs be viewed as a flight from reason or as capable of rational support? Can theologians learn from philosophers? Can philosophers learn from theologians? Is it possible to be both a good Christian and a good thinker? Can there be such a thing as reasonable faith? This book is chiefly concerned with these questions and others related to them. A collection of previously unpublished papers written by the late Herbert McCabe O.P., it examines the nature of religious belief, especially belief in God, with an eye on both theological and philosophical arguments. Some thinkers have sought to drive a wedge between philosophy and theology. Like Thomas Aquinas, whose writings he especially admired, McCabe seeks to show how the two can be systematically connected. Some religious truths, he argues, may defy our understanding. But this does not mean that they cannot be reasonably discussed.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49981053108497,"sku":"GOR005218186","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51008501580049,"sku":"NIN9780826495471","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51885524156689,"sku":"CIN0826495478G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52139123933457,"sku":"NLS9780826495471","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0826495478.jpg?v=1751466717"},{"product_id":"aquinas-book-fr-brian-davies-9780826470959","title":"Aquinas","description":"St. Thomas Aquinas (c. 1225-1274) is widely viewed as one of the greatest Christian thinkers of all time. Aquinas was the ultimate combination of theologian and philosopher; and his influence on Christian life and thought reaches from the Council of Trent to the Second Vatican Council and through to today. Brian Davies shows that Aquinas's approach to the common questions of faith and existence is just as pressing and significant in our time. Here, the latest scholarship is incorporated with a clear and indispensable guide to Aquinas's thought.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50162771263761,"sku":"CIN0826470955VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50491005829393,"sku":"CIN0826470955G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50597863522577,"sku":"GOR003784254","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50831579316497,"sku":"GOR014089245","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51008827425041,"sku":"NIN9780826470959","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51820223070481,"sku":"GOR014411876","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52354757099793,"sku":"NLS9780826470959","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0826470955.jpg?v=1751985750"},{"product_id":"reality-of-god-and-the-problem-of-evil-book-fr-brian-davies-9780826492418","title":"The Reality of God and the Problem of Evil","description":"This is an important new book on how we can still believe in a God of love and confront the problem of evil in the world. Probably the most important book on the subject since John Hick's book \"Evil and the God of Love\". Evil is a strong word that people now employ fairly rarely. Many people believe these days that God is omnipotent, omniscient and good and that what we deem to be bad or evil in the world is no reason for abandoning belief in God. It is an intellectual or theoretical problem not one where the focus is on how one might bring about some desirable goal (a practical matter). Professor Davies says we should tackle this problem by attending to the basics, by asking whether there is a God and then What is God? He starts by summarizing the arguments so far (from Seneca to the present day). He then moves to what he describes as the basics (see above) and demonstrates that much of what has been written about on the topic of evil is in fact irrelevant or just plain wrong. Finally, though many theologians argue that evil is a mystery, Davies argues that this too is wrong and a cop out. We should rather be concerned with the problem (or mystery) of good. The real issue is 'Why is there not more good than there is'. From the discussion Aquinas emerges as a hero (as filtered through analytical philosophy) but many moderns thinkers do not emerge so well. Davies effectively picks holes in the arguments of Peter Geach, Paul Helm, Richard Swinburne and even Mary Baker Eddy. This is a lively book on a tricky subject, written at all times with humour and much practical example.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50273705230609,"sku":"GOR005330964","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51424275693841,"sku":"CIN082649241XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52475894792465,"sku":"NLS9780826492418","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/082649241X.jpg?v=1751986683"},{"product_id":"mccabe-reader-book-fr-brian-davies-9780567668882","title":"The McCabe Reader","description":"Herbert McCabe OP was one of the most intelligent Roman Catholic thinkers of the 20th century, whose writings have enjoyed enormous and welcome success. Born in Turkey, Ilham Dilman spent the majority of his working life teaching philosophy in the United States and Great Britain and published widely in moral philosophy and psychology, most notably on Wittgenstein and Freud. After an autobiographical introduction, in which Dilman reflects on how he came to become a philosopher, he moves, chapter by chapter, into an incisive critique of key contemporary thinkers and movements in philosophy. Dilman asks us to review afresh the contributions of Dennett, Searle, Foot, Davidson and Nozick to the modern debate. The result is a vital and urgent engagement with the core questions of philosophy and a re-instatement of the centrality of criticism in philosophy.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51287621009681,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51287621173521,"sku":"GOR014217537","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52531488489745,"sku":"NLS9781441146915","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1441146911.jpg?v=1751985590"},{"product_id":"philosophy-as-criticism-book-fr-brian-davies-9781441192493","title":"Philosophy as Criticism","description":"In this, his final book, noted philosopher Ilham Dilman offers sharp critiques of his major contemporaries.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52472384061713,"sku":"NLS9781441192493","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781441192493.jpg?v=1759838226"},{"product_id":"mccabe-reader-book-fr-brian-davies-9780567668899","title":"The McCabe Reader","description":"Herbert McCabe OP was one of the most intelligent Roman Catholic thinkers of the 20th century, whose writings have enjoyed enormous and welcome success.
