The photographs depict his family and his artist and writer friends, in particular Eduard Verkade and Andre Gide, and offer greater insight into the life of the painter. In 1895 George Eastman, the founder of Kodak, unveiled the latest model of his portable cameras for the market of amateur photographers. The users of these cameras could not see the subject framed through the lens clearly but Maurice Denis made successful use of the fortuitous nature of early photography. Like Bonnard and Vuillard, thanks to his familiarity with Japanese prints, Denis became one of the best interpreters of the aesthetics of instant photography. The pictures he took between 1895 and 1913 of his family and painter and writer friends are fascinating for the strong affinities they have with his pictorial and graphical work. Maurice Denis' photographs marvellously illustrate the intrusion of mystery into everyday life, which is the very essence of his art.

The music of the peoples of South and Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean is treated with unprecedented breadth in this multi-volume work. Taking a sociocultural and human-centered approach, Music in Latin America and the Caribbean gathers the best scholarship from writers all over the world to cover in depth the musical legacies of indigenous peoples, creoles, African descendants, Iberian colonizers, and other immigrant groups that met and mixed in the New World. From these texts, music emerges as the powerful tool that negotiates identities, enacts resistance, performs beliefs, and challenges received aesthetics. More than two decades in the making, this work privileges the perspectives of cultural insiders and emphasizes the role that music plays in human life.

Volume 2, Performing the Caribbean Experience, focuses on the reconfiguration of this complex soundscape after the Conquest and on the strategies by which groups from distant worlds reconstructed traditions, assigning new meanings to fragments of memory and welding a fascinating variety of unique Creole cultures. Shaped by an enduring African presence and the experience of slavery and colonization by the Spanish, French, British, and Dutch, peoples of the Caribbean islands and circum-Caribbean territories resorted to the power of music to mirror their history, assert identity, gain freedom, and transcend their experience in lasting musical messages. Essays on pan-Caribbean themes, surveys of traditions, and riveting personal accounts capture the essence of pluralistic and spiritualized brands of creativity through the voices of an unprecedented number of Caribbean authors, including a representative contingent of distinguished Cuban scholars whose work is being published in English translation for the first time in this book. The pioneers mastered the constraints of their medium, and their works transformed the way we see the landscape. This book traces the stages they went through in mastering landscape photography, using images taken between 1840 and 1890 from the Musee d'Orsay's rich collections of the photography of this period. The book also features an introduction to landscape photography, detailed catalogue entries for each photograph featured, and a selected bibliography.
Ever since its invention in 1839, photography has had the ambition of reproducing everything and depicting the overall reality of the world. Given the long exposure times of the daguerrotype, the first photographic journeys were dedicated to landscapes and major monuments. Despite the technical obstacles, the attempt to produce a faithful or composed vision of people, of their singularity, their joys and sufferings, appeared by the end of the 1840s, linked to the realist approach of painting and the humanist philosophers. This book features a selection of documentary photographs including those by Felix Thiollier, which reveal his great human and artistic sensibility-depicting the work of the miners in the Saint-Etienne region. Also included are the photographs taken in Poland at the beginning of the 20th century in a Jewish ghetto, which underline the injustice of the fate of the children and the self-sacrifice of their relatives. The book discusses this new form of visual documentation and how it was embodied in the reproduction of major events, such as the barricades in rue Saint-Maur photographed by Thibault in 1848, and in the highlighting of the philanthropic projects recorded in the visits of Charles Negre to the Asile imperial de Vincennes during the 1850s, and in the photographs of explorers and missionaries by Charnay in Madagascar.
Alfred Stieglitz (Hoboken, New York State, 1864 - New York, 1946) remains celebrated in his own country, and was internationally famous in his time. He was the founder of Photo-Secession and the editor of Camera Work magazine, which championed photography as a fine art. Later, he mounted pioneering exhibitions of European avant-garde art, from Cezanne to Picasso, in his gallery at 291 Fifth Avenue, New York. This book's publication coincides with a major Stieglitz retrospective at the Musee d'Orsay, accompanied by an exhibition of the Stieglitz prints in its own collection. It includes images from his Pictorial period (1890-1910), particularly some strikingly impressionistic views of New York (gravures from Camera Work), capturing the city's phenomenal growth at the turn of the century. Stieglitz's later work is magnificently represented in prints recently donated by the Georgia O'Keefe Foundation. These sharply focused and highly descriptive works communicate the photographer's distinctive approach to reality, enriched by inner experience. The admirable nude shots of the artist Georgia O'Keefe (later Stieglitz's wife) are highly original close-ups, charged with an eroticism that was startlingly new in American photography at the time. Stieglitz's cloud photographs (which he termed "equivalents") taken at the family property at Lake George after 1923, were meant to be viewed in negetive to heighten their abstract character. Towards the end of his life Stieglitz lovingly photographed the trees at Lake George, as symbols of nature's endurance. Although he worked with two very different approaches, his aim was always to express a personal vision through flawless technique. He never tried to use his photographs to further a political or social cause. They had an impact on photographers as varied as Paul Strand, Edward Weston and Harry Callahan, and testify to a resolutely personal, but deeply human, experience.
