Drawn from family albums, local collections and professional photographers, they show the way things were and how they have changed. Every photograph is captioned, providing names and dates where possible, revealing historical and anecdotal detail and giving life to the scenes and personalities captured through the camera lens. Bringing together all aspects of daily life - celebrations and disasters, work and leisure, people and buildings - the collection should inspire memories, as well as serve as an introduction to visitors.
How did life emerge on Earth? Perceptual qualities of daylight, such as contrast and temporal variability, are essential to our understanding of both material and visual effects in architecture.

Under the rapidly growing context of energy conscious research, there is a need to re-balance our definition of performance to include those perceptual and aesthetic aspects of light that are often disregarded by the world of simulation. Contrast is important to the definition of space and it is essential in understanding how architecture is enhanced and transformed over time by the dynamic and variable characteristics of daylight. Although there are a growing number of studies that seek to define the relationship between brightness, contrast, and lighting quality, the dynamic role of daylight within the visual field is underrepresented by existing metrics. Although spatial contrast and light variability are fundamental to the visual experience of architecture, architects still rely primarily on intuition and experience to evaluate their designs because there are few, if any, metrics that address these factors.
New metrics that addresses this challenge could help designers to contextualize the relative strength and temporal stability of contrast within a given architectural space, which would open up a new dimension in architectural performance. Through an analysis of contemporary architecture from around the world, the authors have developed a new typological language that categorizes architectural space in terms of contrast and temporal variation. This research proposes a new family of metrics that quantify the magnitude of contrast-based visual effects and time-based variation within daylit space through the use of time-segmented daylight renderings to provide a more holistic analysis of daylight performance.
The Making of the Modern Law: Legal Treatises, 1800-1926 includes over 20,000 analytical, theoretical and practical works on American and British Law. Drawing upon anthropological data from both cultural studies and evolutionary biology, Douglas Fry challenges the traditional view that humans are naturally violent and warlike and argues that we, in fact, possess a strong ability to prevent, limit, and resolve conflicts. He examines several highly publicized anthropological controversies, including Freeman's analysis of Margaret Mead's writings on Samoan warfare; Napoleon Chagnon's claims about the Yanomami; and ongoing debates about whether "hunter-gatherers" are peaceful or warlike. The book features short ethnographic examples, findings from Fry's research among the Zapotec of Mexico, and results of cross-cultural studies on warfare. It also includes descriptions of peaceful societies and archaeological material illustrating that peacemaking and conflict resolution patterns do exist across cultures.
Draws on a series of in-depth conversations with six young readers which provides vivid evidence that fiction is an essential part of each child's living experience.
A Biographical Sketch of Sir N.F.
