In neun Fallstudien werden (populär-)wissenschaftliche Reiseberichte und Zeitschriftenbeiträge, Abenteuerromane sowie Memoiren von Kaufleuten, Siedlern, Kolonialbeamten und Ethnographen untersucht. Die textanalytische und diskursgeschichtliche Studie zielt auf eine materialnahe Spezifizierung von Befunden der Interkulturalitätsforschung und wertet erstmals ein vielschichtiges und heterogenes literarisches Material aus.
