The monks refused to bow before the cross, the icon of Madonna and Child or the king, maintaining that that form of worship was preserved only for the Trinity. They also insisted that asceticism, not observed at that time in the major monasteries, should be observed in all monasteries. These views were not shared by the establishment, and as the number of people attracted to the movement steadily grew, the palace and senior clergy became increasingly concerned. Ultimately, when the monks refused to compromise their principles, the palace destroyed them by meting out the most inhumane punishment. Deqiqe Istifanos is a unique historical document about Ethiopia, especially of the 15th century. The book contains a translation into Amharic of preexisting Ge'ez texts that chronicle the lives of the leader of the movement, Abba Istifanos (Stephen), and his two successors, Abba Abekrezun and Abba Izra (Ezra). It includes also the translation of a Ge'ez text that describes the martyrdom of the many monks and nuns involved in the movement. The translations are preceded by the translator's extensive introduction about the movement. The document concludes with a bibliography and an index.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51009608909073,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51009611727121,"sku":"NIN9780970666321","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0970666322.jpg?v=1750852181"},{"product_id":"catalogue-of-the-ethiopic-manuscript-imaging-project-book-getatchew-haile-9781606088715","title":"Catalogue of the Ethiopic Manuscript Imaging Project","description":"The series Ethiopic Manuscripts, Texts, and Studies offers, in the first place, catalogues of the Ethiopic Manuscript Imaging Project, whose purpose it is to digitize and catalogue collections of Ethiopic manuscripts in North America and around the world. The work brings together all the major sources from manuscripts preserved in different monasteries and edited and translated into English. The sources include homilies by Minas bishop of Aksum, John Chrysostom, James of Sarug, as well as a number of anonymous authors, all translated from Greek during the Aksumite era. The derived literature includes works by the famous men of the pen, including the fifteenth-century Abba Giyorgis of Sägla and Emperor Zär’a Ya‘ǝqob. Poetic hymns to the Cross constitute a part of the collection, one of these being glorification of the Cross by Abba Baḥrǝy, author of several important works.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52584089813265,"sku":"NLS9789004348684","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52692941766929,"sku":"NIN9789004348684","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789004348684.jpg?v=1768561193"},{"product_id":"missionary-factor-in-ethiopia-book-getatchew-haile-9783631332597","title":"Missionary Factor in Ethiopia","description":"European, not the least Scandinavian, mission societies have played an important role in shaping modern Ethiopia and Eritrea. In spite of this the long-term impact on Ethiopian society by European missions has not yet received much attention. The predominance of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church in society and nation makes Ethiopia an exception in the history of European missions, and raises questions of an ecumenical character, which need more attention. Present tension in Ethiopia between Orthodox and Evangelicals, and the tendency to identifiy Christian affiliation with ethnic identity, contribute to make this an urgent matter. The present volume presents the papers delivered at a symposium on these questions held at Lund University in August 1996. They include discussions on the justification of foreign missionary activity in a country already Christian, the impact of the Catholic missionary enterprise of the 16th and 17th centuries, the colonial context of late 19th century missionary activity, the impact of the Europeans on social and intellectual developments, the struggle of the Ethiopian Catholics for an Ethiopian identity in the face of latinization and colonial interests and the question of European influence on structure and leadership in the Evangelical Churches.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52820319338769,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52820320354577,"sku":"NLS9783631332597","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783631332597.jpg?v=1764329726"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/collections\/author-books-by-getatchew-haile.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
