The Grosvenor School of Modern Art was founded by the influential teacher, painter and wood-engraver Iain McNab in 1925. Situated in London’s Pimlico district, the school played a key role in the story of modern British printmaking between the World Wars. The Grosvenor School artists received critical acclaim in their time that continued until the late 1930s under the influence of Claude Flight who pioneered a revolutionary method of making the simple linocut to dynamic and colourful effect. Cyril Power, a lecturer in architecture at the school, and Sybil Andrews, the School Secretary, were two of Flight’s star students. Whilst incorporating the avant-garde values of Cubism, Futurism and Vorticism, the Grosvenor School printmakers brought their own unique interpretation of the contemporary world to the medium of linocut in images that are strikingly familiar to this day. They are included in the print collections of the world’s major museums, including the British Museum, the MoMA in New York and the Australian National Gallery. Cutting Edge, which accompanied an exhibition at Dulwich Picture Gallery, illustrates over 120 linocuts, drawings and posters by Grosvenor School artists; its thematic layout focuses on the key components which made up their dynamic and rhythmic visual imagery. For the first time, three Australian printmakers, Dorrit Black, Ethel Spowers and Eveline Syme - who played a major part in the Grosvenor School story - are included in a major museum exhibition outside of Australia.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49533090464017,"sku":"GOR011953994","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49736653078801,"sku":"NGR9781781300787","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51435714445585,"sku":"GOR010238682","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52400499622161,"sku":"NLS9781781300787","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/178130078X.jpg?v=1750832776"},{"product_id":"cutting-edge-of-modernity-book-gordon-samuel-9780853318668","title":"The Cutting Edge of Modernity","description":"The demand for the linocuts produced by artists of the Grosvenor School in the 1920s and 30s has never been so great. The prints of Claude Flight, Cyril Power, Sybil Andrews and Lill Tschudi, among others, have a world-wide reputation. Their popularity can be attributed to the vibrancy and energy they portray. Following in the footsteps of Futurism, they captured the spirit of their time, immortalising the rapidly-changing world from which they emerged. Through his teaching at the Grosvenor, Claude Flight ignited a new interest in the technique of linocutting. He actively promoted his own work and that of his pupils both in England and abroad and encouraged prominent London galleries to hold regular exhibitions. As a result, the reputation and practice of linocutting has flourished worldwide. This volume offers an overview of the principle artists of the movement and discusses how they varied in their treatment of subject matter and technical approach. The process of linocutting is examined, including the various papers and inks that were employed. The comprehensive notes for collectors, which include a list of the prints made by artists, should be valuable for collectors and print enthusiasts alike. Illustrated in colour throughout with over 50 illustrations of these prints, \"The Cutting Edge of Modernity\" is a book for all those with an interest in printmaking and 20th-century British art.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49565040836881,"sku":"GOR006822489","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50445252002065,"sku":"GOR010647999","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0853318662.jpg?v=1751233811"},{"product_id":"jewels-from-jude-book-gordon-samuel-9780907927068","title":"Jewels from Jude","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49588178256145,"sku":"GOR004185794","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49656356339985,"sku":"GOR005071557","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51871408947473,"sku":"GOR007686084","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/B0007BZ4FS.jpg?v=1750884238"},{"product_id":"keith-vaughan-book-gordon-samuel-9781999729370","title":"Keith Vaughan","description":"This is the fourth major exhibition of paintings and works on paper by Keith Vaughan that we have presented at the gallery. The exhibition was curated specifically to show diversity, originality and technical expertise, and the accompanying catalogue is laid out in various sections to give an approximate chronological order to the development of printmaking in Britain in the 20th Century. A Radical View conveys the modernist thread that flows through British printmaking from the revolutionary Vorticist prints of the early 1900s, through the two wars, the inter-war period and to the beginning of the print boom of the early 1960s. These prints are radically different to their late 19th century and early 20th century predecessors.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50574282096913,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50574282260753,"sku":"GOR008076415","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0993078656.jpg?v=1750706217"},{"product_id":"nash-nevinson-impressions-of-war-and-peace-book-gordon-samuel-9781999729394","title":"Nash \u0026 Nevinson: Impressions of War and Peace","description":"This publication accompanies the exhibition of rare prints by Paul Nash and CRW Nevinson from The Great War and its aftermath at Osborne Samuel Gallery in spring 2020. 96 pages with colour plates and notes on many of the prints included in the exhibition.
